Sorry for bailing last night, LLJK. It wasn't me. It was my wheel. (no, rly!) It tried to reconnect to the xbox (thus hanging the race at the Environment Screen), and then just...died. Quick trip to Best Buy today, and that poo poo is sorted. Boosted_C5 posted:Ugh. I race with pubbies pretty frequently when there's not a goon race handy, and there are some very usable tricks, but they work mostly when you're in a party with some other people who are out to have fun, and not necessarily out to win against a bunch of random people driving like they're 85 years old. We'll do crazy, but fun, poo poo like pick 100 point stock Toyota Aygos. Once you get 4-5 people in the room picking that, even the people not in your party will start picking that car... There's always the one clueless guy who sticks to his 200 point Chevy Spark with the Leaderboard tune, but fighting for 2nd and 3rd becomes a real race. Each subsequent round, someone in the party picks a car, and we race that wherever is next. One night Tom picked the 151 point Hummer, and then the track wound up being Positano. Hilarious, and terrible, all at the same time. Kenny Rogers fucked around with this message at 21:09 on Nov 6, 2011 |

Come one, come all to the first of (N >= 1) Thursday Endurance Races! WHO: YOU!!! WHEN: Thursday, 10 November 2011, 3AM GMT (7PM PST/10PM EST), with warmup/practice starting 1 hour earlier. WHERE: Your Friendly Local XBOX Live Account!! WHAT? There has been some discussion of doing some longer races (that are not GTCC races) in the last few days. So, what the hell, I've (GT: JabsTheGoon) decided to give it a whirl! (I'm relatively new at this, so don't expect the polish you might expect otherwise.) This first week will be a one hour "Showroom Spec Miata" sprint at Laguna Seca. The car modification and setup rules are adapted as closely as possible from the NASA 'Showroom Spec Miata' rulebook. Warmup will be several 5 or 10 minute sessions. Patience and accuracy count! Non-incidental contact that results in upsetting a competitor's car (moves them off their racing line, requires corrective steering input to remain in control, etc.) will require a mandatory 'Drive-through' penalty on pit lane. Multiple contacts in the same lap will require multiple drive-throughs on consecutive laps. CAR: 1994 Mazda Miata PAINT: All cars shall have a 'quickie' custom Design applied consisting of at least the following. * A clearly visible one or two digit number between 00 and 99 on each door, and the hood. The Car Class (SM) is optional. * Toyo Tire sponsor decals. * Mazda and or Mazdaspeed sponsor decals. * (optional) I'll have a Something Awful 'sponsor sticker' available in my Storefront. I'll post 3 tunes with all of the allowed upgrades to my Storefront for those that don't want to muck about with it. I used the Forza4 Tuning Spreadsheet, and I think it came out reasonably balanced. I've used that same spreadsheet on several of my other cars in the last few days, and they've all come out the other side of it being MUCH more driveable, with less of (whatever happened to bothering me about it), with the exception of the Bel-Air, which swapped piglike understeer for a moderate amount of power-on oversteer. It seems like a pretty good starting place to me, and it's well supported with reference data. 'Spec Miata Aero' is ForzaTuned with Aero on it with max downforce (100#) set. 'Spec Miata' is ForzaTuned with no Aero. SpecMiata is upgraded to the limit, with no adjustments. I'll also gift it if you want one to muck about with the tune, with the caveat that Transmission and Spring adjustments aren't allowed, and there are limits on camber. Shoot me (JabsTheGoon) a FR and a message to remind me that you want the tune. ENTRY LIST: 1. JabsTheGoon 2. Crow T Macbot (Flint Ironstag) 3. Turb0Snail (T-square) 4. Fryskate 5. matybara 6. It was a decent turnout for a first event, and I think everyone had a good time, aside from some grumbling about the Cockpit View. Asmodai slipped from 2nd to 8th in the first turn on the first lap, running wide into the dirt. Wups. (Dude - if you'd have held on, Crow overdrove a couple laps and trashed his car. I think everyone lapped him eventually! *grins*) There was a good fight for 2nd and 3rd going on during the final 2-3 laps, but like hell if I'm going to fast forward 90 times in the replay editor to get to it. Consistency was really the key, along with being able to get through the Corkscrew consistently without hitting the sand. Logue and I were using the exact same setup, and had VASTLY different results. It went well enough that N>1 for this series. I've co-opted the BMW CCA's Spec E36 Points Structure for this series. * 5 points for taking the green flag at any event. * 10/7/5/4/3/2/1 points for finishing in 1st-7th place. * 1 bonus point for each car behind you that does not DNF. After week 1, the standings look like this (I think - I relied on the replay to tell me who took what position, and gently caress fast-forwarding 90 times. If I got it wrong, let me know, and I'll fix it): code:
BMWCCA Spec E36, Spec Miata (which is different than Showroom Stock SpecMiata), NASA Spec E30, Spec RX-7, etc. Thanks to all who showed up! I thought everyone did a pretty awesome job painting the cars using 'to spec', too. I thought Asmodai's car was hilarious. I'll post up some Spec E36 Rules by Sunday! jadebullet posted:Yeah... do we REALLY have to have all of those emblems on our cars? When I've gone looking for Spec Series rules, I haven't found a single one yet that doesn't have some sort of required decal set. NASA Showroom Stock Miata was the lightest of the bunch so far, in that they only require the Toyo and Mazda logos. Generally, each series requires any mandatory decals listed in the car clubs CCR's (BMWCCA, NASA, SCCA, etc.) and some additional ones for the Spec Series. Now, how that's going to be enforced at a regional vs. national event will, I'm sure, be variable... That said, there's a not so fine line between "We're here to simulate a real world series as best we can in an Xbox game", and "gently caress that, we're simulating a real world series in a loving XBOX GAME!" Err on the side of having fun. Each week, I'm going to list what the real world series requires, just to set a bar. Like the allowable mods, that bar will be set by whatever's in the actual rulebook for that series. Unlike the allowable mods, I'll leave it up to you guys to go for capturing the spirit of those rules (i.e. not just slapping a black number on a dark blue car and calling it a day), while still keeping your own sense of fun and individuality. You're not going to get DQed if you've gone so far as to put numbers on your car. The graphics 'rules' are ultimately there as a guide to roughly what your car would look like if you'd built it out for real - i.e. Spec E36 should have ~7 stickers on each side, while Showroom Stock Spec Miata only required 2. FWIW, my personal favorite sponsors (and I've been using them on and off since NASCAR Racing 2003 Season was The Big Game) are Slumberil, Binford Tools, Big Kahuna Burger and Duff Beer. I am considering adding a weekly points bonus for 'best' and 'gooniest' cars, so that the guys (who, like me, aren't goddamn Logue ) have a way to score some series points that don't involve "loving drive better, doosh!" Thoughts?

I just don't know how much engine you'd have to give someone like me or Asmodai to make us reasonably competitive with someone like Logue... Perhaps I'll shorten the Sprint next week from 60 minutes practice + 60 minutes Spec race to 30/30 for the Spec Race and grab that last 30 minutes for a LeMons race, with your finishing place in that race determining what upgrades you get for the next week?

speedtek posted:I work too late to be able to participate in the SE36 race, but last night for shits I tried to build an M3 to as close to the actual SE36 rules as I could. Does anyone have any idea what the spring rates are on the Spec suspension? I can't believe how much time I spent looking in every possible place online and couldn't find the answer anywhere. I did find that the sway bars are 27mm in the front and 24mm rear. The quickie tuning guide that I used before I went to the full blown spreadsheet is Thor's Tuning Guide. The spring starting place he gives is: (weight of car * % of weight on that axle) * .3828 = starting spring rate. For a 1000 pound car with 55% of the weight up front: F: 1000 * 0.55 * 0.3828 = 210 R: 1000 * 0.45 * 0.3828 = 172 Once you've got springs dialed in, you want to set damping. The example he gives is: F: Bump: (Spring Rate * .00734) Rebound: (Spring Rate * .01445) R: Bump: (Spring Rate * .00718) Rebound: (Spring Rate * .01436) On our hypothetical 1000 pound car, then: FB: 1.54 FR: 3.03 RB: 1.24 RR: 2.48 Drive it around some with telemetry on (preferably over the bumps at Maple Valley) looking for two things: A) Is it compliant when you hit a bump with only one side of the car? If you're flipping over at MV, your springs are probably too stiff. Soften and recalculate bump and rebound. B) Does the suspension bottom out over big bumps? If you're bottoming out at MV, your springs are too soft. Stiffen and recalculate bump and rebound. Once you're happy with how the car deals with bumps, you can dial in some under/oversteer the way you like with the swaybars 0.2 points at a time. Stiffer in the front will give more understeer/push and softer in the front will give you more oversteer/loose. Kenny Rogers fucked around with this message at 00:32 on Nov 16, 2011 |

My take on the Prowler is that it was a loving *brilliant* piece of niche marketing - aimed squarely at the peers of my dad. Born in '37. Graduated High School the year James Dean died. Probably drove some 1930's clapped out Dodge. Spent some time being a car guy in the golden age of the '50's. Maybe built what would be a 'rat rod' today out of an old model T. Met this girl along the way, and married her in the early to middle 60's. Traded the Rat Rod for maybe a Ford Coupe or Olds Holiday 88. First kid comes along in '68. Second one in '70. 1974 brings a third kid, and an AMC Hornet or Chevy Impala station wagon. In 1984, the station wagon goes away, and now there's a Dodge Caravan in the driveway. His soul is crushed. In 1992, the youngest child goes off to college. In 1996, the youngest child graduates college. In 1997, Dear old Dad has a mid-life crisis, returns to his T-bucket roots, and buys a loving Prowler, because he's officially Too Old For This poo poo. See? Brilliant. =)

You can spec the car in 5-7 minutes, and spend 2-3 hours squeezing the last bit of performance out of it, if you want. I'm going to have to post the rules for next week later on tonight - We're movin' on up to a proper series - Not only will you have to tune your setup, you'll have to pick a car from a list first.

We're stepping up our game here a GoonSpec Laboratories! I think there will be a few issues to hammer out with this, so: A) I'm posting it as early as I can. B) I'm planning on running this series for the next several weeks to address issues/questions/misunderstandings, etc. Come one, come all to the first of (N >= 4) Wednesday GoonSpec Endurance Races! WHO: YOU!!! WHEN: Wednesday, 7 December 2011, 3AM GMT (7PM PST/10PM EST), with warmup/practice starting 1 hour earlier. WHERE: Your Friendly Local XBOX Live Account!! WHAT? A RACE THAT WILL LIIIIIVE IN INFAAAAMY! This week, we step it up a notch and visit the NASA US Touring Car Championship! Remember: Patience and accuracy count! Non-incidental contact that results in upsetting a competitor’s car (moves them off their racing line, requires corrective steering input to remain in control, etc.) will require a mandatory ‘Drive-through’ penalty on pit lane. Multiple contacts in the same lap will require multiple drive-throughs on consecutive laps. FreelanceSocialist posted:Jabs, can you double-check your Power-to-Weight methodology? The Genesis Coupe I am trying to tune cannot meet the 12.2 ratio. That would mean at 306hp, my minimum weight would be over 3700 pounds. What am I supposed to do, put a Datsun in the trunk? Yeah, I'm at work, so I can't check them in game. The actual formula is in the first few pages of the rulebook I linked . I'm sure part of it is that NASA uses wheel HP. EDIT: I left the E46's out because the E46 M3 is specifically excluded, but I guess since I included the "uprated" versions of some of the other cars (the b.spec Legacy, f'rinstance), if nobody 'protests', I won't have a problem. If that's the case, should I lop on the 2000 Audi S4, as well? Kenny Rogers fucked around with this message at 03:17 on Dec 2, 2011 |

Flint Ironstag posted:Which puts the Mini at not 11.3, but 11.5 lbs/hp. And I'm not taking the time to check the rest of the list, since I already declared for the Mini. Fixt. Also, I have no idea where Turn 10 gets their HP figure for the E36 M3. That's a RIDICULOUSLY high number. Even highly modified M3's are turning out over **100** fewer HP than Turn 10 claims. I'm checking each one of them in game to see how they measure up stock. I'll probably wind up having to apply an 'effective HP modification' to account for the difference between Turn 10 using Crank HP, and NASA wanting Wheel HP. code:
I'm going to try to account for driveline loss for the 'best guess' I have from looking for answers for two hours. quote:6.12.3. A base minimum weight must be declared based on the following formula and the horsepower declared in 6.12.2. The minimum weight is calculated using the following formula: After introducing a factor for the differences between crank and dyno HP, this is what the table looks like: code:
The E36 is completely broken, and I'm removing it from the list. That extra 81HP explains a LOT why I commented 2 weeks ago that my Daily Driver ('97 M3 Sedan) drove NOTHING like that... The E46 M3 looks like it could be shoehorned in as a replacement with a 0.2 point drop for RWD down to a flat 10.0, with a 0.2 raise for the Genesis and E46 for having more than 2.5 liters on tap. The E46 M3 would have to be basically stock - only 45 pounds of weight reduction to play with. FWIW: I can get the E46 to 342hp/3485 pounds, which would fit in a "10.0 + 0.2 for over 2.5 liters" RWD scenario. Thoughts? Kenny Rogers fucked around with this message at 06:58 on Dec 2, 2011 |

Fortuitous Bumble posted:I think I'm at the point where I can often make laps without careening off the course.. Fortuitous Bumble posted:I just want to make sure I have this right, you're choosing a car, then upgrading the power and reducing weight until you meet the hp/lb limit? I was messing around with the RSX and got it to 2680 lbs and 274 horsepower times 9.75 is 2670 lbs so I think that fits. It would be really nice if there was some sort of restrictor upgrade to let you fine tune power without having to screw around with combos of engine upgrades. The process I went through last night was to select the car, cage it up under Handling, as required. Add the Race Transmission, Race Brakes, Sway Bars, and Diff so I can tune it properly. Upgrade to the lightweight Buddy Club wheels, Set the wheel size to 17" and the width to 225-45/17 (or as close as I could get), and Race Compound. Take the existing weight at this point and divide by the 'class factor' to get my approximate horsepower 'cap'. Start the balancing game of adding and removing parts and recalculating until I found a balance I was happy with. It's going to be quite a bit more challenging than Showroom Stock Spec Miata has been - You can build a Spec Miata in, like, 5 minutes. * Buy a Miata. * Download Logue 1's Miata Tune off his Storefront. * Go Race. * Know for a fact that you're slow because you're a lovely driver, not because it's a crappy tune. P.S. Boaz - the Spec Miata we've run a couple times is a NASA series, too. =)

GentlemanofLeisure posted:Quick question about adding power to cars. Is there any reason to go with one certain engine upgrade over another? I know that some of them like exhaust can reduce the vehicle weight as well as add power, and some add weight like the oil coolers. However, say I need to add a couple points to the PI...is there any reason to upgrade the exhaust to the next level instead of an air filter upgrade? Or the fuel/ignition upgrade? http://forums.forzamotorsport.net/forums/thread/4859908.aspx The guy did the work for one of the Mustangs (as it had almost all of the possible upgrades available), and he worked out the power to weight to PI increases for each component, then prioritized them. Pretty neat stuff. I noticed that I had the wrong SHO about 1am last night. gently caress it, the new one is enormous. If you think you can be competitive with it, go for it. =)

gently caress it. I'm around, and clearly plan on being around at least weekly for a long time - I realized the other day that I really missed having a weekly race series on my schedule. First it was NASCAR 2003 Series, and then later, a group of guys in rFactor. So, what I'm saying is that there's an nth option now. After loving around for 20 minutes trying to find an alphabetical combination that worked and didn't suck... [AUGR] was (finally) available. "Auger" seems to fit our collective driving style, too, if you don't mind co-opting a term from aviation, I guess. Apps open, gents.
