quote:

This show is a weekly conversation between Tig Notaro and her co-hosts Kyle Dunnigan and David Huntsberger, in which they focus on a central theme they find interesting. The topics range from scientific to philosophical to metaphysical.

Professor blastoff is a show in which 3 comedian friends, and usually an 'expert' guest, discuss a topic ranging from the physical to the metaphysical, and planetary exploration. Sometimes Tig, David, Kyle and guest stick to an overview of the topic, but most of the times they focus on one aspect they find most interesting.

It also has a really awesomedumb backstory:

quote:

Professor R.L. Blastoff initally created a weekly radio show in the early 1940's, shortly after he had begun preliminary work on a prototype time machine. His research over the course of his distinguished career in fields such as applied physics, molecular biology, and chemical engineering earned him numerous prestigious awards – including two nobel prizes. Sadly, before his radio show reached the air, his time machine reached completion and he was transported not only to a different time – but a completely different dimension. Since then, he has been helplessly trying to navigate his way home. Until he returns, his radio show is guest-hosted by three people who mistakenly wandered into his office.

I love this show. The three of them just fit so well together.

Although I do have a spergy pet peeve: when they refer to Kyle's spoofs of mnemonic devices as "riddles".

I think the first one was more of a riddle, but now they are just sprawling 'poems' that never really end. They really are hit and miss though.

I wish aaron would still only talk off mic, but I do like the word of the day segment. BSing word definitions is always great.

Ooo man. I listen to first episode and someone pegs the reason for Multiple Personality Disorder and then proceeds to get shot down as to why would anyone do such a thing. Its a fun podcast but definitely not one you would go to for real information.

In the evolution episode, their guest was a professor and had a very long, boring riddle about evolution. In a later episode, Kyle tried to recite it and the first of Kyle's "riddles" was born.

This is actually a great podcast. It is definitely very funny: I love when Kyle does a funny voice, and Tig is really awesome. If you like Tig from Comedy Death Ray, or Comedy Death Ray at all, you should listen to this one. They don't dwell on actual science and philosophy discussion, luckily, because they don't know anything about any of their subjects, and that is boring anyway, in favor of being funny.

David is pretty much that philosophy major freshman who says things like, "Guys, what if every night existence reset itself but you didn't even know about it?" And I love that Tig and Kyle always poo poo on him.

Anyone else get 2.5 minutes of silence during the "break" in the Atheism episode? It's like that on the download and on the website. I always love their fake ads, I hope they put up a fixed episode.

I cringe sometimes when Aaron is speaking, just because I'm sure I'd sound just as goony if I were being recorded alongside actual comedians. How does it feel to predict exactly what his first comment on the topic "Magic" would be? NOT VERY GOOD

Yeah I wish they'd cut down on the Aaron chime-ins. David already fills that kind of nerdy role without being so goddamn awkward.

New episode about taste is actually very insightful and only has minimal swamp rock (the best amount of swamp rock).

I haven't gotten a chance to listen to the newest episode yet, but I'm glad Tig is back. The show wasn't very good without her. It was basically just David drilling into Aaron for believing in God, it was really uncomfortable.

I didn't see this thread so I made reference to it in the overall comedy podcast threads. It was a really heartbreaking but also uplifting episode. I wonder if Tig is never allowed to drink or have fried foods again for the rest of her life or just until she's completely over the infection.

what was it, pancreatitis? If so then yeah, alcohol and fatty foods have an increased risk of inducing another acute attack. She's going to willingly avoid those like the plague, though; people with pancreatitis are in severe pain during an attack, and every additional attack ractches up her chances for DM.

Of course this all goes out the window if it's chronic/autoimmune/fixably hereditary/I'm way off/ect.

I'd have to re-listen for the details, but it started with her getting pneumonia from overwork, then she had some kind of complication that basically rid her body of good bacteria, so she got some kind of infection that had her hospitalized for a while. When she got out, she was told that she was all better, so she immediately ate some kind of fried sugary food that made her intensely sick again. Then she got to enjoy that while watching her mother slowly die from a freak accident. It was a hell of a listen, but I don't think I'm going back for seconds.

Listen to it alone in a room instead of on the bus or at work cause things'll get misty.

How do y'all feel about Reggie's episode? Compared to his spot on Who Charted it felt pretty lackluster. I really wish they would listen to David and stay on topic. The best episodes for me are the ones with people who actually know what they are talking about, and lately they've been drifting more towards just loosely riffing on whatever given topic they know nothing about.

Granted, that's half of the entertainment, but I enjoy it a lot more when I (and they) learn something also.

I love when they go off-topic and just riff, and I often get annoyed with David (and Aaron) when he tries to steer it back to serious. I don't listen to this show to learn things, I listen because I enjoy their comedy.

I was disappointed that they did an entire episode about music and swamp rock never came up. Also, I like Reggie Watts, but he didn't seem to fit in very well with the others.

I think that may have been the issue for me. I'm a huge Blastoff fan and an even huger Watts fan but I can't put my finger on what exactly I didn't like about the episode.

I'm not expecting this to be an educational podcast but I really liked the dynamic between the three of them and whatever non-comedy person they had on. I listen to a ton of podcasts and it gets a little disappointing to see the same rotation of 12 comedians on every show. Having someone else on PB was a nice change.
