The Game

One part Seconds and two parts Funny Games, Fincher's least-acknowledged film is also one of his most gleefully cruel, putting the screws to his audience almost as much as he does to Michael Douglas's harassed investment banker. I can't totally disagree with its status as a "lesser" Fincher (it certainly doesn't have as much meat as Social Network, Zodiac, or Se7en) but even bad Fincher is good cinema and if that sounds like faint praise it isn't, because The Game is really good. More importantly, though, it's on Instant in HD, which is a huge step up from the poo poo-tastic letterboxed DVD.

Hulu+ is basically a Criterion streaming service (their channel doesn't get ads) with a bunch of other stuff as a bonus.

What kind of market was Married With Children made for? It's such an ugly, unpleasant show. Whenever I think about it my mind always goes to the sitcom scene in Natural Born Killers.

On a more upbeat note they've finally added the rest of Frasier.

Also the one where they make limousines is probably the best hour of television ever.

It'd be hard to go wrong with Charade, unless she hates old movies or something.

Party Down is amazing, everyone go watch Party Down before they take it off Netflix.

I imagine that eventually we'll have to buy packages of studio libraries, like cable subscriptions.

Thanks for the tip. I'm watching this instead of the superbowl and laughing my rear end off.

Holy poo poo this is great.

Isn't it? I got it in the CD Secret Santa last year and it took me a while to get around to watching it because for some reason I thought it was some kind of douchey bros-and-hos thing but then I realized that that was Adam Scott and Jane Lynch on the cover. It took me about a week to plow through it and I really hope they do the follow-up film.

It also has Maggie Smith being old, I don't know how anyone could say no to that.

Upstairs, Downstairs is also on Instant and it's like an earlier, rougher, and, depending on your taste, better Downton Abbey.

edit: It's like New Dr. Who and old Dr. Who. New Dr. Who is pretty but sometimes kind of dumb and old Dr. Who is ugly but often really innovative.

Netflix really knows me well. Just had Naked pop up on my Recommended feed:

http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/N...4?trkid=2361637

I first saw it when my former roommate rented it way back in '98, and it remains one of the best and most bleak films I've ever seen. It stars the guy who would go on to play a werewolf in Harry Potter as a lovable scamp!

This and The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, And Her Lover (also on Instant, featuring Michael Gambon - Dumbledore 2.0 - as a monstrous crime lord) are two of the angriest films I've ever seen about the Thatcher administration. Naked is one of Mike Leigh's more orderly films but he's got several other movies on Instant and they're all worth watching - Happy-Go-Lucky (Sally Hawkins plays a relentlessly upbeat schoolteacher who goes head to head with a frustrated, pessimistic driving instructor, played by Eddie Marsan), Vera Drake (Imelda Staunton - aka Dolores Umbridge - provides illegal abortions in post-war Britain), All Or Nothing (Timothy Spall - aka Peter Pettigrew, to keep with the theme - heads a working-class London family, which includes James Corden), and Topsy-Turvy (about the creation of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado - Jim Broadbent plays Gilbert). Leigh is probably my favorite director right now and I recommend all of those really, really highly, though, of those, All Or Nothing is probably closest to Naked.
