![]() I was never too big a fan of Jay Mohr. Loved his impressions, but thought he was pretty much a dick. Turns out, he'd agree with me. He speaks candidly about his dickish past (among other things) on his podcast Mohr Stories, which has quickly become one of my favorite shows. Things you will learn after listening: - Nikki Cox is actually really loving smart and has great comic timing/sensibilities. Who knew? - Barry Katz's voice is amazing. It's kinda like Owen Wilson in slow motion. - If you thought Bert Kreischer's laugh was intense on Joe Rogan Experience, wait till you hear Mohr crack him up so hard he actually shits his pants. - Eric Roberts is pretty loving awesome. codyclarke fucked around with this message at Feb 18, 2012 around 04:17 |

I looked up Barry Katz's picture after the Dirk Nowitzki story. I can see how that guy made the mistake. Here's the kingfish bit from ep#2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvG7KhElK5M

I love this podcast, it's one of the few that I download every week no matter who he has on. His impressions are fantastic, I crack up every time he does Keitel.

Like the OP, I was never a fan of Jay Mohr. I knew him as the guy from Jerry Maguire and he did Chris Walken impressions on SNL. Never heard him do standup. This podcast is one of the few I download immediately. Its the only one I am actually caught up with. Skip the first five minutes, which are very lovely Smodcast ads. The rest is loving great. And its not just a bunch of standup bits and chunks. There's a lot of shop talk about showbiz and standup and he is very frank. One of my favorite bits: http://youtu.be/c189WO8jKyc

I thought the Eric Roberts episode was pretty uncomfortable. The poor guy's stutter was really bad at times, and Jay and Nikki just kept going on and on about how beautiful of a person he is. Not a huge fan of when Nikki is on. Thought the "Kingfish" bit was one of the funniest things ever. Bert should be on every show.

I enjoy the show for the stories but it has a few issues for me. In one of the first episodes he was mentioning how he is trying to gain popularity for a radio show, presumably because he is getting killed on the payments for his sitcom house. He seems to have relaxed from that type of "This is mohr stories hash tag mohr stories i'm here with barry katz, follow him on twitter" etc. so that was nice, but you can tell the guy still has some petty chips on his shoulder. I could do if he lightened up on the forums/camaroguy51 stuff and getting into "but just the light you radiate is so, so, so, warming, you are truly a beautiful person" so often. You can tell he realizes he had a problem and is trying to be a caring person but it just comes off as too much sometimes. Also I prefer Nikki to not be too involved but she doesn't really ruin it. Fun filler show and some guests have good stories but it is STILL hard to really like Jay Mohr like one may enjoy other comics. Edit: Also yeah I do like Barry Katz because it is a lot more behind the scenes comic talk and it is cool he was so involved in New England because I hear about things I can actually visualize! (Talking about picking up a comic in Nashua, NH to do a show in Boston or whatever blew my mind, Jay's memory is a pretty interesting thing) Hmmm, maybe I was too harsh because now I'm remembering the Chink-a-minute story and that is a loving good one too. I really like this show, it's great to hear an insider talk about the industry candidly, and Mohr is kind of the last of the old school which makes for a nice contrast with the majority of podcasters who are youngsters trying to break into a rapidly changing entertainment industry. That said, I really wish Nikki would just make the occasional appearance. I felt like she was being very disingenuous about the whole Bobcat thing, and Jay obviously couldn't let it go, trying to take the high road but still being a dick about it. I think she was definitely covering something up, there, and it's that kind of stuff that can be annoying. But she is a much nicer and more interesting person than I would have suspected based on superficialities.

Nikki has been popping in less and less the last few episodes. Speaking of which both the recent Colin Quinn and Dave Attell episodes were great.

R.I.P. Patrice O'Neal. Looks like his interview with Jay was one of the last, if not the last, he ever did. I urge you all to listen to that episode, if you haven't already. And check out his standup DVD, 'The Elephant in the Room', which is fantastic. He will be greatly missed.

I heard the episode with Patrice after I heard about the stroke, but before he died, and it made me sad that it was probably the last I was going to hear from him. I think he was one of those truly great stand up acts that goes under appreciated.

The most recent thing was after Bert was on the Rogan podcast, and they got into a discussion about Jay doing Bert's Tracy Morgan bit (specifically Jay doing it on his upcoming Showtime special). Joe and Redban thought it was immoral and essentially joke stealing, despite Bert giving Jay permission to do it. When Jay heard them discussing it, he threw another fit because he wasn't there/wasn't invited to give his side of it. He had a similar Twitter meltdown, basically begging to be on Joe's podcast and obsessing over it.

I like his podcast but this last episode is unbelievably boring. Boring, and the long and stupidly incorrect food discussion is idiotic. "Listen to what I'm saying. I've read all the scientists."

By the way, was it just me or was that Skyler guy he had on not that great at impressions? I liked his Vince Vaughn, but that was about it. His Owen Wilson and Clooney and Michael Douglas didn't sound very accurate.

I dunno about you guys but this is by far my favorite podcast and I listen to maybe 4 or 5 comedy podcasts regularly. I feel like this thread doesn't get much attention because frankly there isn't much to complain about, which is the bulk of most discussions here If you disagree, I advise you to LOOK AT DUH GAME TAPE

One of my favorite lines from this podcast is 'Goodfellas is to Comics what Scarface is to Rappers'. Nikki Cox was spot-on with that one. I was at a Louis C.K. Q&A about a year ago, and someone asked him what his favorite funny movies were, and he talked about how he thinks Goodfellas and Raging Bull are hilarious. And I know Jim Norton and a bunch of other people are big fans too.

Holy poo poo the most recent one with Brendon Walsh was funny. I might have to start listening to his podcast (if one can find it). drat Jay's loving story about kayaking with his 3 year old. This one more than made up for last weeks with Daryl Wright which I felt like was the weakest episode of this entire podcast. I did not find him funny or interesting at all.
