Ran across an interesting, yet annoying problem when trying to use repeater bridge mode between two ASUS RT-N16 routers. When streaming an HD video from either router, it causes ping times to jump all over the place and packets to drop. I am running the latest recommended build in the dd-wrt peacock thread. Also, seemingly randomly, the two routers will drop their wireless link. When the routers are in the same room, it appears to be a little more stable, although not as solid as I feel it should be. When placed at moderate distances (although strong enough for a wireless client to be pretty much rock solid to the main router), the repeating function seemed to be quite flakey. Does anyone know if this is an issue with this specific build of dd-wrt? Are there any other more recent builds that are known to work better in repeater bridge mode?

Have had very few complaints about Airport Extreme routers over the years. Great find.

Just purchased the asus rt-16n and flashed it with tomato usb. I'm connecting at 300mbps via wireless but I'm only getting about 2.3-3.3 MB/s transfer speed to another computer that is wired into the gigabit port, any ideas why it would be so slow? That's pretty much on par with G speeds of the wrt54g it replaced :smith:

Sounds like a firmware issue/bug to me.

Are there any dd-wrt'able routers that are not prone to ever resetting themselves to factory defaults? We deploy a lot of these, and by far the most common problem is the nvram settings getting wiped out for whatever reason. I know that people recommend putting them on battery backup to reduce the likelihood of this happening. But, are there any that simply will not reset to defaults?

I don't think it's dd-wrt. I think it's the router hardware being triggered to reset due to random power surges / poor / cheap design.

Also, you should update the info on the Airport Extreme thusly:

Airport Extreme 5th Generation
NOT DD-WRT OR TOMATO COMPATIBLE, 128 MB RAM, 16 MB flash, Marvell 88F6281 1.2 GHz processor, simultaneous dual band radio, Gigabit Ethernet

All the specs were revealed in this AnandTech takeapart. True, they're not official, especially since Apple never really publicizes their components, but I'd trust them.

Edit: Hmm, 1.2 GHz? No wonder it does well with multiple clients. Also there is separate radio hardware for each band, so no wonder it can do dual band without slowing down.

Jesus christ. I knew the hardware in those things was good, but those specifications are better than I expected! I might be ordering a Time Capsule soon.

Looked into this a little out of curiosity, and apparently you aren't alone on this one. There are some people who allegedly have flashed v3.0.x.x beta firmware from ASUS to resolve the issue. Take this all with a grain of salt as I don't actually own this router.

I imagine some people use the Asus RT-N16 with Tomato, right? My roommates and I sometimes see sudden drops in internet speeds with the router and it seems like we're not alone:

There's a lot of (often contradictory) recommendations about changing the wifi channel or fiddling with interference mitigation, afterburner, and other advanced settings in Tomato...What have people seen actually work for them?

This is where you'll find dd-wrt breaks down quickly. I rarely see any consensus on dd-wrt builds on this sort of thing.

We have a winner?! I was able to keep my macbook and phone connected and streaming netflix/youtubeHD for an hour straight without issue. Then I connected my HTPC - within 5 five minutes I lose connection on all three devices, none of which even see the AEBS network as present. My HTPC is a Lenovo q150? I think is the model... its a POS but it is enough to run sabnzbd and MPC, which is/was good enough for me. I'm a fairly experienced guy with respect to basic network setup, and I've never seen anything quite like this before. Its a Nettop running win7, does anyone know what might cause this? I'm going to connect the HTPC to my old network and see if I can find a more current Wifi driver, but beyond that I'm not sure what I can do to figure it out...

EDIT: According to Lenovo I have the only version of the driver for wireless adapter. poo poo. Now what?

Hard-wire the HTPC into the old Buffalo router, assuming it is running either dd-wrt or tomato. Put Buffalo in client-bridge mode and call it a day.

More and more retail outlets are carrying the powerline extenders. I think it truly is your best bet. Try and find a local place with a decent return policy and give it a whirl. The 200 and 500 mbps units have almost always worked for me and I've deployed dozens of pairs over the past few months.

Has anyone experienced problems with Motorola Surfboard 6121 modems and Apple Airport devices? I was at a client's house today and assumed his Time Capsule was defective, but had really weird connection issues through a 4th generation Airport Extreme. Everything seems just fine running straight into the modem, but through either router resulted in erratic performance at best. Definitely not an interference issue on the wireless, since both 2.4 and 5 channels were having the same problem. I made sure nothing else was latching onto the WiFi and killing performance (changed SSID / PW). I also switched out the cat5 cable connecting the two devices, just in case. I haven't tried another brand of router because I was ran out of time today, but plan on it first thing upon arriving in the morning.
