rage-saq posted:I've never seen any laws that indicate it is illegal to make international personal alcohol shipments on either the US or Belgian side. I don't know about NZ but they are a bit more progressive on the alcohol laws than the US so I can't imagine it would be breaking any laws. UPS and FedEx only ship alcohol under certain circumstances (and a six-pack internationally would be way more than $60) and i'm pretty certain it's just plain illegal to ship it via USPS. don't know how that applies to things coming in to the US, but customs is gonna be checking it out on both ends. funkybottoms fucked around with this message at Oct 28, 2011 around 15:03 |

would like to get my hands on some Boulevard Saison Brett and Imperial Stout (and maybe a few other midwest beers that don't make it to VA). i went ahead and made a google spreadsheet, which is here- those are all the seasonal or non-native things i'm sitting on, but obviously have access to many other breweries (Ommegang, Allagash, and Terrapin, to name a few not in my cellar). edit - did this for my own benefit, not just trades, hence a few "no"s. a few of those might be negotiable under the right circumstances.

rage-saq posted:I've used those, they are expensive and they fall apart. The Rare Beer Club has some pretty clever molded eggcarton/particle paper material that can hold 3 750mls per layer that are pretty clever, but I don't think they would secure as well as styrofoam shippers, which are totally the way to go. yeah, those inserts don't look so great to me- they could collapse really easily if enough weight was put on the box; kicking poo poo down the stairs just proves that they don't move much within the box. also, no loving way i'm gonna trust a "packaging expert" who doesn't use a tape gun.

CalvinDooglas posted:Boxes can be pretty resilient. The thickness of the outer box will make the biggest difference as to "crush weight". The egg carton type things won't protect against weight at all, since they effectively make the beer bottles the vertical support. i think rage-saq is talking about something like this, which, from what i've seen, works pretty well. most wine shippers use styrofoam, though. i bubble wrap and double box, but that's because i run a UPS Store and don't have to pay for materials.

Docjowles posted:Any ideas where else I could find those styrofoam shipping packages in the OP? Online? I went and asked at some local liquor stores and not only do they not sell them, I got scolded for trying to illegally ship hooch if anybody gives you a hard time, tell them you're flying and need to check the box. jerks. you can order them from uline, but you'd have to order a lot, so maybe ask around at various pack-and-ship stores (they probably don't sell them, but my store gets them from people who don't want to toss them in the trash) or like a U-Haul spot as they sometimes have different materials than a UPS Store. okay, just looked and found this. $14 isn't a bad price when you consider how much material you'd need to properly pack that many bottles otherwise.

Docjowles posted:Awesome, thank you. I ended up getting one of those and a couple of the 6 packs too so I can have something on hand for future trades. nice! a quick tip: U-Haul boxes are sometimes kinda flimsy, so you might want to throw an extra layer or two of cardboard inside of the bottom of the box so a random corner won't poke through and break the styrofoam.

digitalhifi posted:This looks like a really great way to ship beer. It's similar to the shippers at BevMo and the like but cheaper and can be bought online. They are $10 for 5 shippers and boxes. Each one holds 6 bombers or 12 oz bottles. Anyone use these before? I'm planning on trying them soon. http://www.clarkbrewing.com never used them, but i work in packing and shipping and i think they look pretty crappy. as rage-saq said, find a styrofoam shipper (or bubble-wrap and double-box your beer).

Sublimer posted:The guy printed his own FedEx label and declared the weight as 17 pounds when it was really about 35 pounds. He says sometimes they will send it and sometimes they'll re-weigh it and adjust the price. Do any of you do this? It's a bit dishonest, so I'm not entirely sure I'm gonna do it in the future. if there's a discrepancy between the billed and actual weight (or size), he should be seeing adjustments on his statement from FedEx. sometimes, especially with ground packages, the discrepancy isn't enough to change the cost, but if he's intentionally doing that, yeah, kind of a dick move. edit- Drayman's Porter is fantastic, that would be a go-to if i lived in New England

UPS Ground does not move on Saturday, that's normal, and the reason it took so long to get there was because of severe weather delays between the two of you (there was even a train derailment in Montana; maybe your box got all shook up?), which likely would have had the same effect on a FedEx shipment. upgrading the shipping would not have helped in this case, not to mention increased the price significantly. lovely about the bottles, though, sorry to hear that.

rage-saq posted:Ship on a Monday and ship fast enough so that it arrives at its destination by Friday. That way it never sits in some random warehouse for days on end, its always moving towards its destination. yeah, i was gonna wait for rage-saq to chime in; i know packing and shipping very well, but not much about alcohol storage and cold tolerances.* the only further advice i can provide is to make sure the bottles are moving as little as possible so the carbonation doesn't get all agitated. also, if you're gonna secure the top, which some people swear by, stretch/saran-wrap it really tightly and then go around it a few times with packing tape (not masking, duct, electrical, etc). *shipping warehouses tend to have minimal climate control at best and trailers are sometimes loaded days in advance of actual movement. you can check the detailed tracking info to see the exact route it took and get a better idea of the temperatures another shipment is likely to experience.

Midorka posted:Thanks, after I posted I realized I should probably tape it, then put saran wrap or something else around it then tape it again. Can't wait to ship this out! really, you should bubble-wrap it. with the cans, you don't have to worry about vibration/knocking together so much, but they can still get damaged. at the very least get an inch of densely-packed paper on all sides and line the inside of the box with an extra layer (or two) of cardboard.

okay, since my brother failed to grant me my wish and bring back a decent haul from his trip to Florida, i'm looking to get some of the stuff he missed, namely Cigar City, Swamp Head, Peg's (maybe a stretch) and 7venth Sun. big stouts (Zhukov in particular), sours, and saisons are all of interest, and special-release stuff like BA Church on a Hill would also make me happy (really, i'll take anything that's not an IPA or plain old lager). would also like stuff from Michigan that doesn't make it out my way- Dark Horse, Kuhnhenn, JP- you know, what you'd expect someone to be looking for. for anybody else, i'm always looking for Crooked Stave. on my end, i have this crap to offer. of note are the highly-rated Hardywood Gingerbread Stout, Blue Mountain Dark Hollow, Imperial Stout Trooper, and Williamsburg Alewerks' Cafe Royale (even rage-saq liked it!) and Bourbon Barrel Porter (just picked up a fresh case of the latter and have a few bottles from last year). if you look at the other tabs, you can see what all i can get, because i'm obviously not cellaring IPAs and poo poo, as well as goons i've traded with. you can email me at smrandolph at gmail.

i, too, would be interested in a bottle or two of Hunahpu's. i have a fair amount of cellar i'd be willing to trade, including big stouts and sours from the likes of Hardywood Park, Goose Island, Founders, Hill Farmstead, Olde Hickory, NEBCO, Firestone-Walker, Williamsburg Alewerks, and the Bruery.

Boris Galerkin posted:Is shipping beer really just as easy as going to Bevmo and buying the foam box/packaging and then taking it to a UPS store? Do they only sell them for 12 bottles or do they go smaller to say 6 bottles as well? as long as you don't tell them you're shipping alcohol (it is not illegal to ship it via FedEx/UPS, but it requires a contract, which you do not have, so unfortunately you have to lie), yes.

FreelanceSocialist posted:Contents: "Yeast Samples" do not say this. first, it sounds fishy, and second, if the box should go missing and you need to file a claim, good luck giving them a value/receipt to get some sort of compensation. i would suggest saying it's some sort of local specialty like hot sauce, sparkling cider, olive oil, or maple syrup- that way you can go online and find a price since you cannot give them the receipt from the beer shop.
