^^^^ They have to be selected in your vehicle customization screen. They take up a slot that can be used for other poo poo, I forget which one exactly though. I think RMB toggles them on and off when you have them equipped.

I agree completely and I think they need to look a bit at the Recon in general. Compared to the other classes, engineer in particular, he seems largely useless on a team, and his tools are sorta weak. I think it would be cool if his stuff was redone a bit, perhaps 2 MAVs, one which can laser paint and one which has the motion sensor stuff.

I have said this before and I will say it again - if you want to play Recon and own, use the MK 11 or SVD with iron sights or a 1x scope and just run around with your team and own poo poo. Two or three shots with the rifles will down anyone. Play offensively, place beacons wisely and you'll do well. EDIT: This is not to say that their gadgets are not lovely, however. The beacon is definitely the best

Yeah the key to doing well in the chopper is coordination with your gunner. Having 2 sets of flares is very helpful, or extinguisher + flares. Don't even bother going near an AA gun unless you are certain it is engaging something else. TV missiles are so far away to unlock which is somewhat annoying. On the subject of choppers, i really hate that thermal vision shares a slot with flares. It should just be always on for the gunner.

I don't play on hardcore servers which means thermal vision is mostly a cosmetic change, making it so you shoot at white dots rather than red triangles. It's nice, but by far one of the more redundant unlocks if you know how to mash Q (mashing Q is not hard).

TV missiles are not that great. As I implied earlier, they fill a very useful tactical niche, but they have a lot of issues that prevent them from being some sort of bread and butter weapon. They're great for hitting immobile or slow moving things from across half the map. The rocket pods are great for immobilizing things from half the map away. You do the math.

Double flares is strictly inferior to flares + extinguisher, because the latter works for all sorts of damage and will really save your bacon in a hairy spot. Double flares means you can be somewhat more ballsy in areas with a ton of stingers, something that's usually a bad idea anyhow for a number of reasons.

You right click to switch it on, assuming you selected it from the customize screen.

Edit: Yeah my pilot hasn't unlocked the extinguisher yet unfortunately. I was just assuming the thermal optics also included the zoom function as well (like in that coop mission). Shooting at orange triangles across the map does indeed work. I think Canals as US is probably the most chopper friendly map, or Kharg island rush.

Anyone else have issues spotting in jets?

I used to spot people in beta all the time to make dogfighting them easier, but while I can hold down the button and bring up the rose, it just wont spot. (This is bound to a button on my XB pad, for the record)

It's annoying for tracking people in dogfights, sometimes I want to take stealth over air radar.

This. Even with countermeasures helicopters are incredibly vulnerable but you really need to have a good gunner if you want to survive longer than a few people to spawn with Stingers.

The M240B has some incredible damage potential due to its rate of fire and caliber, but it loses control for it. With the M60 you can literally never stop shooting until you're out of bullets and still be accurate at long range while at it.

The M60 is definitely my favorite balance of power and accuracy out of the LMGs, but it still feels like complete poo poo compared to any rifle or carbine except in the rare cases that I can live through the hail of grenades and rockets long enough to mount it on a bipod in a mid-range area. Every other class easily dominates you at long enough ranges and suppression is an utterly worthless mechanic except as a way to pick up extra points and feel like your godawful inaccurate gun is actually helping.

That's a funny thing to ask given that vehicle abilities didn't stack in BC2. Upgrades such as V armor or V sensor only worked when deployed in the driver seat, only V warhead and V reload worked anywhere else, and then only for that particular seat!

Oh yeah, that would solve all of its problems. The whole deploying thing is nice but it's mostly just flavor, as this feature is clunky as gently caress and not very good for something that doesn't provide the same level of immediate reward as say the mortar.

The only good thing about the way it works right now is that I've seen people (tanks, even) try to shoot the SOFLAM at long range only to never succeed in destroying it. It's cool that you can hide somewhere and use it remotely, but the range is not good enough and most of the maps are not open enough for this to be as useful as I would like.

That or if once you're locked on, it would automatically rotate and chase the target. That would be fun and would make it feasible to pick up an engineer kit from the ground and use it with your own SOFLAM.

Yeah, I love the MK 11. But unless it's a map like Grand Bazaar however, I will still use a high power scope. I have no trouble killing people at close range with it.

They're also amazing with a bipod. It greatly reduces the recoil so you can basically fire the rifle as if it were a pistol - at long range you can fire your third shot just as the first one hits the enemy, they never see it coming.

The biggest problem with the beacon is that it can be seen in the map by enemy players. In big, open maps I actually end up using it as a way of ambushing enemies.

Have you played Canals Rush? The Tunguska can completely shut down the attacking team with its surprise sex cannon. Popping boats, swatting choppers and disabling the AMTRAC so that people either have to sit in it until it explodes or swim to the shore. It's even worse if any of the defenders have Javelins. Provided, of course, the Javelins don't crap out and start targeting the ground below the target as they often do.

Canals CQ can be fun because the Russians start as far away from the shore as possible and the US team can get on land. And Kharg has a similar problem, but it at least has the massive wall of dirt from a cinematic airstrike acting as a massive smoke grenade, and the US team gets three LAVs to push out with.

The special forces expansion for BF2 had the soflam as binoculars that you didn't deploy for the spec ops class, and they were loving awesome. Also, the the soflam shouldn't automatically lock onto things. It is a laser, you should left click to turn it on and then have to manually track the target. That way it actually feels like you're doing something while using it, and it allows you to turn on the laser only when one of your teammates is ready to fire so that you can use it for spotting and general reconnaissance without inadvertently giving it away by locking on to some random tank driving by.

I haven't tried Kharg Rush yet. it has a scripted airstrike? That's cool, I've only seen the scripted bombing on metro so far. Are there any other scripted events? I havent seen any or the Rush I've seen so far (mostly played CQ) and was a bit disappointed by it. BC2 had the little cutscenes post game and tons of scripted radio chatter. Hell, no one even talks about needing to jump in Damavand, which is a shame because the game could do with some more flavour stuff.

Don't get me wrong, BF3 is amazing, but it's absolutely dry as a bone. I really wish they had a little more fun with it and handn't abandoned Bad Companys ethos entirely. Going along with this why aren't the Diamonds above the mini map Labelled with which base they are? Just a simple A - E in each diamond would go a long way in making it a lot better.

In addition, I hate having to constantly cycle between mini map zooms, especially when I never loving use the middle zoom. If hitting M just made the map bigger and also zoomed out to the maximum zoom that would make it a lot better.
