Might sound obvious but join a squad (that isn't recons), this allows you to spawn with team mates and greatly improves your chance of survival.

This is just personal preference but use a silencer. When you are new and don't know the maps, firing and giving away your position on the minimap attracts the attention of enemies very quickly.

This reminds me. Always use your minimap. "N" changes it's size I think the default size is too small for starting off (you want to know where your objective is and where the enemy is) only use that smaller scale for when you are in close combat and holed up some where.

In vehicles "C" switches to third person cam which is very useful.

A little trick to throwing medkits or ammoboxes is to throw them while jumping, letting you heal people who are behind cover but under fire, across a hallway or to resupply and heal yourself bit by bit without stopping. You also move faster across even ground jumping every few steps when sprinting, which is extremely useful when trying to bag and tag clueless victims.

Most people have their minimap set to the default setting which means you don't need a suppressor if you know exactly how far are you away from the enemy you're trying to shoot and the enemies who you've spotted.

The minimap on the highest magnification covers only around 20 metres so if you know the map layout very well you can pick people off before their teammates know, since the killfeed works on a 2-3 second delay. This is why you can knife someone and knife his buddy before he knows, unless he pays attention to his squad names.

Plain knowing the layout of the maps and working around the enemy's field of vision and sticking to cover will get you far.

Pretty much this. If you see someone, push Q before you start firing. This puts a glowing dorito over their head and anyone in the area will immediately start firing on them, giving you suppressing cover fire to kill them.

Even if they're 200 yards away and all you have is a SMG, iron sight them and push Q, then keep on moving to your objective. You'll get the spot bonus for whatever helicopter or sniper takes them out.

Oh right, and stay behind cover, so you're not the guy running across 200 yards of open fields. Chances are, you've got a glowing dorito over your head already, which is why everyone is shooting at you.

One of the biggest gripes I have with this game is the lack of customization possible. The minimap, for example, seems to have been designed by people who never use it. At my playing resolution (1680x1050) the default map size is too small and the bigger size, too big. Why can't you just set the size by pixels in your loving cfg file?
This is made worse by the fact that as soon as you look down a scope, or die and get resuscitated, or jump in a vehicle, the loving map resets to default zoom and size. A bug, IMO, that has been in the game since release.

Why doesn't every vehicle have its own separate mouse sensitivity setting? Why can't you choose to see your score or your team's tickets without going to the scoreboard? Why can't I have the option to show my squad-members' names/perks on my hud? After 15 years of PC games on id tech and other engines, this behaviour seems like a terrible troll of your customers.

These features would not be complex or time-consuming to implement or QA, and in some cases, would make so much difference to player experience. Are developers that poor/lazy/rushed today?

Smegmatron posted:

Here is a basic explanation of things for the complete newbies. Put it in the OP or something so people stop asking questions.

Basics

Spot everything always. If you see a thing, press Q. If you're about to shoot a thing, press Q first. If you think you might have seen a thing but you aren't quite sure, press Q a couple of times. Never stop pressing Q. If the only thing you remember in this post is that you must always press Q no matter what, you will be better than 80% of the pubbies who play Battlefield. This is the single most important thing anybody in the game can do.

Press Q

Always be in a squad; you get bonus points for performing actions like revives and resupplies with your squad and they can at the very least act as spawn points.

Press Q.

Don't be afraid to change squads; if you're in a squad with three idiots who insist on sniping, change squads. They're not doing you any good and they're well beyond any help you can provide. Alternatively, spawn on them and fire smoke grenades at their faces so they can't snipe anymore. Blinding them with a taclight is fine too.

Press Q

Think before you spawn; There is no such thing as spawn camping in Battlefield, just people spawning infront of bullets. Clicking on the spawn point or squad mate shows you a real time preview in the background of the spawn menu. If it's got 5 tanks in it, you probably shouldn't spawn there.

Press Q

Killing people is secondary to nearly every other function you can perform in a Battlefield game. The only time killing infantry should take precedence over something more productive is when they're threatening you, their presence is stopping you from doing that thing, or their death will allow a huge advance for your team. Sometimes it's OK to let the guy halfway across the map continue living in ignorance of the fact that you're capturing a control point. He'll get his eventually if he's that dumb.

Press Q

Look at your minimap. It will tell you all sorts of cool things at a glance, like where your team mates are and where the enemy is. Wondering how that guy knew to throw a grenade over a rock you were prone behind? Minimap. Not sure if you have enough friendlies around to make a move forward? Minimap. Use it. M expands it to take up more of the screen, N changes the zoom level.

Press Q

Game Modes

Conquest

Each team gets 300 tickets. Spawning a player costs the team one ticket. A dead player coming back to life from an Assault's revive costs the team 0 tickets. If one team holds more than half of the objectives on a map, the other team will bleed tickets in addition to what it's costing them to spawn players.

Capture and hold objectives by occupying the space around the objective with more members of your team than the opposite team is doing. Players in vehicles all count individually to the capture rate, so a jeep with three people in it is equivalent to three players on foot.

Basically, hold three out of five points and defend them well. Don't extend yourself in such a way that if one of your three starts to get capped you can't get back in time to save it. If your team is losing badly, work out which point your enemies aren't paying attention to and see if you can discretely get to it to capture it.

Rush

If you insist on playing rush, here is a handy guide.

But seriously, rush is bad. Don't play it.

Classes

Assault

You should be: Pressing Q, holding control points, killing people, unkilling friendlies.

Do not: stand still.

Your job is to capture and hold objectives while keeping your team mates alive in the process. You should never need to be asked to drop health packs and you should be reviving people before they hit the ground. That said, don't be a moron and revive people without spending a couple of seconds looking around to make sure it's safe to first. Your buddy will take a few seconds to come to and he'll only have a pistol to defend himself until he gets up. If you see a vehicle, move the other way as discretely as possible.

It's ok to equip your grenade launcher because every team needs a couple and the smoke grenades are really good at keeping people alive in the few seconds after you've revived them. I would advise against using your grenade launcher without the underslung attachment though. It's a piece of poo poo if you have to equip it every time you want to use it.

Engineer

You should be: Pressing Q, holding control points, killing people, killing the horse they rode in on, unkilling friendly vehicles

Do not: Try to shoot people at long range who haven't noticed you already and aren't heading in your direction. Also don't fire SMAWs/RPGs at things that occupy less than 10 pixels on your screen because they're so far away.

Primarily, you should be staying near your team's armor and repairing it when it gets hit. Your tanks and LAVs are far better at killing enemy vehicles than you can ever hope to be and you should be aiding them in doing that. By all means support them with the occasional SMAW/RPG/Javelin/Stinger/Igla, but that's secondary to keeping them alive. Your primary weapon is weaker and harder to control than an assault rifle. In a fair head to head fight, you will lose to basically everyone. Don't pick fights unless the odds are overwhelmingly in your favour. Tilt the odds in your favour by bringing a tank to the gun fight. Your rockets are also pretty good at killing enemies who think they're safe because of the concrete they've put themselves next to. Blow up the concrete and them with it. This is perfectly ok and anybody who tells you otherwise is a jerk.

Important note: When repairing a vehicle which has been disabled (i.e it is on fire and can't move properly anymore) you need to repair it to 100% health or it will continue to bleed health when you stop repairing it. If you start repairing a vehicle, do not stop until it's at 100% unless you need to attend to something which is trying to kill you.

Support

You should be: Pressing Q, holding control points, killing people, killing the horse they rode in on, fuelling the rampages of team mates, scaring the poo poo out of enemies with suppression.

Do not: Be lazy about dropping ammo.

Use the bonus suppression perk once you get it. Your starting weapons are effecitvely high capacity assault rifles. Use them as such. Mimic the Assault class in its role and keep the locals supplied with ammunition. Plant C4 on enemy tanks (3 bricks each, to be sure) and knock down any cover that might make life easy for your enemies with it too. When you unlock the light machine guns, use their huge ammunition capacity to keep the enemy's heads down while the rest of your squad gets around them to gently caress them with knives and bullets. Bipod vs. Foregrip for these is down to personal taste. As long as you're shooting at people and scaring them you're doing your job. you should never need to be asked for ammunition. People with the ammo sign next to their name in your hud need ammo. Give it to them.

Recon

Your should be: Pressing Q, holding control points, killing people, getting behind the enemy team, deploying a T-UGS, unlocking the M39 EBR in co-op and putting an IR scope on it, considering a different class.

Do not: Use a bolt-action rifle, equip a scope more powerful than an ACOG (4x), stay still.

You are not a sniper. You are not a sniper. That isn't your job. Even if it was, it's a lovely job that doesn't help anybody. Tanks make far better snipers than you ever will. Don't bother. Your job is to expose the enemy team on the minimap via spotting and the T-UGS or SOFLAM for your team to gently caress up. In the process, feel free to pop a few heads from cover with your Mk11/SVD/EBR. You're not a sniper. You should never be more than 20m away from the supports and assaults in your squad unless you've run around to flank the enemy team and establish a spawn becon for yourself so you can stay there and let your squad spawn in to capture points the enemy isn't paying attention to. When you're capturing a point, drop a T-UGS so your buddies can see anybody who's coming to crash the party. If you're on your own, cause the enemy team to displace and relieve the pressure on your team by capping a point they aren't paying attention to. Watch the minimap to see how many people come to get it back, and if it's only a couple start picking them off before moving along. Eventually a tank will show up and fist you if you're still there.

If you try to play like a traditional sniper, you will be spotted, your scope will act like a strobe light, and the entire enemy team will come to gently caress you with knives, tanks and helicopters. Everybody loves loving with snipers because it's so easy. Even with a T-UGS watching your back, you won't be able to defend yourself against more than two people at a time and you will eventually get knifefucked. Your tombstone, should anybody bother to memorialise you, will say "Here lies MikeMilinski, a worthless douchebag who contributed nothing to our team."

Don't be that guy.

Using the suppressor was mentioned which I totally agree with cause suppressed weapons are awesome but when you can't or don't want to use one you still need to be mindful of your surroundings and giving away your position.

You do not have to shoot at every single thing that moves. If an enemy is at long distance or going into a building and you're running around with an AEK or M249 or something similarly inaccurate at long range, it is much better to spot and follow them. Firing a shot will alert them to you in some way (hit marker, bullet trails), make you show up on the minimap and waste your ammo. If you're using a very accurate gun and are confident in your skills then by all means, plink them off, but when I was first starting out I would shoot at everything no matter where they were and it would end up in me getting killed or searching for a support.

Additionally, if you are in the gunner seat of a tank, do not shoot at anything that isn't an infantry or a jeep. You won't do damage to other tanks, you won't hit jets because they're too fast and you will barely do anything to helicopters. All you will do is alert the enemy to where you are and they will shell/rpg you.

Don't sprint around corners.

Try to reload when you still have ammo in your clip since it will be (sometimes significantly) faster then reloading from empty.

I'm recently getting oneshot by sv98 and L96 while sprinting and the kill message does not show that I was headshot.

Yesterday I was playing an engineer, died then spawned all the way across the map some 30 seconds later and got a kill with the rpg despite the last rocket I fired was more than a minute ago.

Using shotgun slugs sometimes has a really long delay between hitting someone and them falling over dead.

All of this is happening on low ping servers and I have a really great connection.

I think the biggest part of the CQC expansion that people are missing is the GODDAMN AUG. I don't care about the maps or anything else, but I have more kills with the AUG A3/STG.77 than any other weapon in BC2 and unless they seriously it up, I will pay $10 or whatever just to have the lance of god in my hands again.

It's a little odd, but somehow aesthetics and my personal tastes affect my performance with weapons a hell of a lot more than their stats do-BC2, my highest-efficiency guns were the AUG, M416, and Mk.14-and as soon as CQC goes live, I'm sure the AUG will again be at the top of my list. Don't care about the specs, just love the weapon.

I know real life blah blah blah AUG sucks blah, but I love it's looks still.
