![]() Release dates PSN: October 18 (Out now!) PC (Steam): October 20 (Out now too!) Price PSN: $19.99 (free if you pre-ordered all the PSN PLAY promotion games) Steam: Same price, but there's also a 4-pack that comes out to $15/person. What is this? Payday: The Heist is a 4-player cooperative FPS that puts you as a member of a criminal team looking to pull off some daring heists, whether it be breaking into a hardened bank vault or setting up a hit and run on an armored car parade. In each heist your team will have to work together to complete several objectives while fending off increasingly threatening waves of law enforcement, all while keeping your hostages cool and your head cooler. tl;dr Think Left 4 Dead meets HEAT. Gameplay Payday has six different heists spread out over four difficulties: easy, normal, hard and overkill. Higher difficulties give you more heists to choose from but are also harder to pull off, and playing earlier heists on a higher difficulty will reflect this as well. While all four “characters” play identically the same, each player can customize themselves by gaining reputation (basically XP, shown as cash) in one of three classes. Classes can be changed freely during a heist and players can even mix and match their layout before a heist starts. Assault: The “lots o' bullets” class. Playing assault unlocks an ammo bag to keep teammates stocked and can be upgraded to hold more ammo. Assault also gets access to weapons like machine guns. Sharpshooter: Sharpshooter can use trip mines to set up a nasty surprise for any cops rushing through a doorway, and also get access to precision weapons like sniper rifles. Support: Support can use a doctor bag to let teammates patch themselves up and uses more specialized weapons made for dishing out big damage to specific targets, like revolvers and shotguns. Some upgrades in each class also have an overall reputation cap you have to meet before moving on, encouraging you to play as different classes. Payday also uses a challenge system that keeps track of several accolades during the course of your career, such as gunning down so many cops with a certain weapon or completing special tasks. These grant additional reputation and sometimes trophies/achievements. Screenshots ![]() ![]() ![]()

KNOW YOUR ENEMY Guards/uniformed cops/gangers: The first responders and the most basic type of law enforcement/opposition. Carries only pistols and no protection. FBI: The next step up, they are armed with pistols and kevlar vests. SWAT: The most common type of opposition once a heist is in full swing. Almost fully armored and carries either submachine guns or shotguns. Sniper: SWAT officers camped out on rooftops and high places. Their shots do big damage but leave a trail as well. Shield: A specialty SWAT unit, uses a bulletproof riot shield with notches he can shoot back with a pistol through. Flank around them to take them down. Cloaker: Stealthy-looking guys with Splinter Cell-style nightvision goggles. They can throw smoke grenades to obscure your vision (but not theirs and the other cops) and take more damage than a regular SWAT to kill. Whatever you do, do not try to melee them! Taser: Heavily padded and distinguishable by the yellow highlights on his suit. Uses a taser gun to incapacitate teammates and leave them vulnerable to enemy fire. Kill him to free someone caught in his current. Bulldozer: The "tank" of law enforcement. Fully clad from head to toe in heavy body armor and carries a pump-action shotgun. Focus fire is necessary to take them down. Their helmets will also crack with repeated hits and leave them open to headshots. FRIENDLY ADVICE -If you have a mic, USE IT! This is a heavily team-oriented game and being able to tell people where to go or that you're pinned down can be very important at times. -Use R2 to mark toughter enemies (highlights them in red) like shields and bulldozers. -Cuffing hostages is important for two reasons. One, you can use them to trade for any teammates that are arrested (killed). Two, extra hostages at the end of a heist give you a reputation bonus. Remember to use R2 to force them onto the ground first. iastudent fucked around with this message at Oct 27, 2011 around 16:14 |

Honestly, I've got my eyes on this. Kane and Lynch's multiplayer was fantastic, though rather predictable after a while. Even minus the betrayal of other players I'm definitely on board with this.

The second heist is my favorite so far. They even call it "Heat Street". ![]() Also my cooperation with others has improved dramatically since I found my bluetooth mic.

This sounds like a really fun game to play with friends, especially due to, concept-wise, there not being anything else that's centered around bank robbery as far as I know. How many cops are thrown at you though? Is this frantic and fast-paced, with you mowing down dozens or hundreds of officers? Or is this a little more realistically set up with smaller squads and more strategic choices? Either is good, they're just different kinds of games and I'm not sure which one this is.

You start with a couple guards/cops and during the heists there's "assault" waves of tougher ones. Also you generally face tougher enemies the further you are into a heist.

Is their customisation for the characters (vanity!), or is it just equipment/perks/stuff?
|

Just equipment/perks/stuff. Sadly there is no create-a-mask feature... yet.

I always enjoyed coop shooters, and left4dead always had a nice charm about it. I hope the PC version isn't terribly obvious about being a console port (or even better, not a console port!) Oh nice they have a 4pack too.

So I just figured out that shooting civilians not only gives you a money penalty after the heist, it also makes the negotiation time when a teammate is arrested longer... oops.

I've been looking forward to this game only to find out it's not on XBLA. Oh well.

I really, really wish they would let you betray your teammates for a bigger "cut" of the cash. The best part of Fragile Alliance with K&L was never knowing who was going to try and take the money and run and trying to figure out if people were legit or not. Part of the fun of Heist movies like this (which is what they're emulating) is that you never know who is against you and human greed conquers all. See: Any Tarantino movie ever.

There's always the chance they could make a Fragile Alliance mode into DLC. I want this so badly Also I just finished the Green Bridge heist with a reputation of 20 and some more heist-specific challenges popped up on my list. That's cool if it unlocks more challenges for you as you level up.

Is there any randomness to the heists when you replay them? I really enjoyed playing L4D2 with friends but once you were familiar with the levels, I got really bored when you ended up just trying to do the run slightly better or with a gimmick since it was pretty much always the same.
|

The objectives stay constant but there's some randomness to them. Like with the aforementioned Green Bridge, which prison car has the prisoner is random each time you play.

I've been really looking forward to this game. Glad to see there is some goon interest for it. Last I heard they were aiming for a release of the PC version for this Friday

scamtank posted:So hold on. This isn't terrible shovelware at all? edit: Some examples of said rough edges. - Ammo is scarce near the end of a "stage" because it's difficult to obtain extra. - The game has the same "director" system as L4D, but goes overzealous at times and really wants you loving dead. Skynet 2011. - When the poo poo hits the fan and you're a few guys down, its hard to bounce back. *Keep in mind that many mainstream game journalists are bad at playing video games. I have the game pre-ordered. This was $18, and Batman Arkham City was $40 (its only $40 if you own LEGO Batman or Arkham Asylum), and I bit the lure. loving Steam, raping my wallet like it's going out of style. http://steamcommunity.com/id/MC2552John/ Add me if you want to make some mad cash money.
