No, not really.

If Tokyoites are slick corporate businessmen, Osakans are crass, cheap, down and dirty mid-sized business owners.

They are generally known for their interest in food, for being somewhat warmer and flashier than Tokyoites, for being much less formal and less reserved. Osaka was THE major center of commerce for most of the country for a long time so people from the city there are steeped in a long tradition of being focused on trade and money. Additionally, there is a slight image of being rougher than Tokyoites, and a long tradition of organized crime in the Osaka/Kansai area that I won't get in to for possibility of derailing.

Oh, and also, Osaka is the center of Japanese comedic traditions. It continues to this day that Osakans are expected to be humorous, to the point where many comedians adopt a fake Kansai accent to compete in comedy.

I feel like this is one of those situations where denying certain things about the origins of lolita fashion or trying to just make it about cutesy dresses or whatever is sort of unfortunate.

Japan, originator of the lolita fashion stuff we're talking about here, has a less than stellar record as far as what westerners consider to be basic women's rights.

A lot of times, it has been my impression from the girls and women I knew while over there, that Japanese women find themselves herded into very strict gender roles, and many go through a period of either "subverting" or wrestling uncomfortably with what is expected on the way to having an identity as an adult female.

There have been examples of this exact variety of sexual identity politics in Japanese culture for a while. While there are probably similar examples dating back much further, a very illustrative one involves what I've read regarding the originators of the ganguro/yamamaba thing which has gained internet notoriety over the past few years. Apparently, these girls were originally simply reacting to the reality that as teen girls and young women riding the subways or trains of Japan, they were going to inevitably, at some point, be touched or molested against their will. Their reaction was to make a fashion out of being as repulsive or frightening or simply far removed from standard beauty ideals as applied to young women by Japanese society as possible. Of course, this door swings both ways: the yamamba or ganguro look was almost instantly sexualized or fetishized by Japanese men's magazines.

Similarly, despite, or regardless of whatever western lolita fashion fans say or believe about lolita fashion, it is a product of these same sexual and cultural forces that caused this look to develop among a certain subset of young Japanese women. Could be a subversion of the widespread fetishization of infantile females by Japanese popular cultures, could be a way for many of these girls to feel in power of their own sexuality in a society where, let's face it, child pornography was legal until 1999 (seriously,) could be any number of things. And I am definitely not saying that people who like lolita fashion, whether in western countries or in Japan, are "ageplayers" or hosed up or anything of the sort. Just that denying it's origins and making it seriously just about really frilly dresses sort of does a disservice to this cultural offshoot as a whole, in my opinion.

Sorry, kind of long, but a thought I've had about the whole thing for a while.

Oh, I wasn't denying the origins about it. Actually I'm glad you posted this story because it's very interesting, and I kind of wish I'd had the wherewithal to do it myself. I was more talking about where the fashion is now just in America. Do you mind if I quote you at any point? You put it far better than I ever could.

I don't mind at all.

Japanese subculture can be very interesting because whereas in America, as a teen you're conditioned to and expected to divide up into a certain sub-group ("jocks", "nerds", "band geeks", "drama geeks" etc etc) which may to some extent determine your social hierarchy within the greater school but within which you can still be socially active and part of a group or culture based around having similar interests or values, in Japan you are as young people consistently divided by gender and gender alone, and in terms of dress, speech, action, values, future dreams and goals, interests and basically every other category imaginable, and you are expected to conform to the narrow confines of this category lest you become basically outcast. Bullying of people who, for whatever real or perceived reason, don't fit in with their peers. So seeing subcultures crop up DESPITE great pressure to conform, instead of BECAUSE of great pressure to be entirely unique, is fascinating.

Dabbo, your story is very disturbing, as well as sad. I just find it profoundly sad that your mother would choose to coddle your brother instead of seeking to get him help with his problems, and I feel very sad that she has chosen to scapegoat you this whole time as well. It seems as though, from what you have said, you were resilient enough to get on with your life though, which is great. Anyway, I'm really sorry that all that stuff continues to happen to you.

My only really disturbing run-in with creepy fan-fiction writing weirdos was something that happened to me in high school. I was in Chinese 101 as a sophomore with mostly freshmen, and made friends with a girl named Yong in the class who was family friends with a boy in our class, Ryan. I thought he was rather cute, because he was extremely quiet and seemed shy and studious, and usually had a calm smile on his face. I asked Yong to talk to him for me, but he wasn't interested in hanging out or dating because he really liked this other girl they knew, Jenny.

Really liked Jenny. Really, REALLY liked Jenny.

To the point where, as Yong later found out, his main hobby was composing story after story where he kidnaps, rapes, tortures and then murders Jenny.

Weirdly, this was one of those things where when you're in high school, the full gravity of the situation doesn't hit you. I thought, oh, that's odd, at the time. But the gravity of the situation never sank in until way after I hit adulthood.

I don't know what happened to Ryan or Jenny. I feel like if he had murdered her eventually, I would have at least heard about it through someone from school. But yeah, very creepy "fan" behavior in hindsight.

Edit: for those who haven't seen it, and even if you don't like anime much I highly recommend this short series, is entirely and obviously about how bad it is to retreat into fantasy instead of facing unpleasant truths.

To be fair pretty much every entry-level Japanese class has someone similar in it. Luckily, if you stick with it, those guys get weeded out by like second year max, in my experience. The upper levels still have unusual people in it, but no one quite so uniquely horrible and socially inept, because I think to get to that point you actually have to finally put in at least a modicum of effort.

There was this girl who I went to school with that I still keep in touch with over AIM and such. She is apparently a furry, but even though I've known her for the better part of a decade, I only found this out about 3 or so years ago because she acts and looks and bathes like a completely normal person.

Anyway, I was kind of intrigued by the same question as Corridor and asked her about it. She didn't seem to have too much interest or knowledge about furry costumes but what I gathered from what she was saying was that there's two main types of furries in general now: people who specifically like the designs of really cartoony (looney tunes or disney style) animals, and people that like more realistic anthropomorphic animals. Like a human body with fur with a literally real looking lion head on top or something.

I think the cartoony outfits are horrifically ugly too, but apparently that's a thing for some of them.

I watched about a year worth of it a long time ago when I was living in Japan and it was on tv, but it was probably the only magical girl anime tv show that I can think of that a: didn't in some way creepily sexualize little girls AT ALL and b: had rather rich, solid characterization far better than you'd think it would have being some random kid's show. It's genuinely heartwarming in places and one of the few anime shows I really wouldn't hesitate to show a little kid.

I just thought I'd make mention, bridging "anime talk" with "creeper talk"

4Kids entertainment's press release for acquiring this show to be dubbed included the line "the designs are pretty, so they appeal to girls, but they're also very sexy, so the boys like them."

Yep

4Shame, 4Kids.

I think it's inevitable that creepy weirdo fans will sexualize anything (just look at MLP eughh) but it's unfortunate a large company chose to perpetuate this instead of talking up other, more positive points in their press release. Sadly not surprising though.

Back to the topic at hand this reminds me that there was a creepy kid in my middle school who had the whole series of Sailor Moon on vhs back when the fansubs were the only choice that existed in english for series 3-5 and he would try to get girls to do him sexual favors in return for lending the tapes. Yeah.
