Dr. John D. Kelly, MD of the University of Pennsylvania Dept. of Orthopedic Surgery published the following article in the Outpatient Surgery Magazine:

I realize it's considered fairly acceptable to have a laugh at the expense of obese folks, but something about an MD admitting that he feels this way about his overweight patients behind their backs, and a medical magazine finding it acceptable to mock their patients this way, seems to cross some line of cruelty/decency to me. I guess I've seen some people argue that obesity should continue to be publicly scorned so that it isn't encouraged and I suppose they wouldn't object to this article. What do you think?

I don't see any issue with it from the standpoint that people make fun of fat people but it seems incredibly unprofessional for him to publish a piece like that. His choice though. I can't imagine it will help him professionally or career wise.

It seems like you could write a scholarly article about treating the obese or body builder pt that would be useful to medical professionals as it is definitely an issue...

EDIT: Too bad for him that his email address is part of the article since he will probably be swamped with angry fat people emails now.

I do this technique called a suplex. You probably haven't heard of it, it's pretty obscure.

I am not a surgeon but I've heard that surgery on obese people is very difficult because you constantly have to shove the fat out of the way, along with all the other health risks obesity brings. I'd probably be grumpy about that too.

Also, no offense, y'all bleed a hell of a lot more than skinny people, meaning there's a decent chance someone accidentally leaves some gauze stuck to the inside of your thoracic cavity.

Hate it when that happens. Fucks over your quality metrics to high heaven.

That is very unprofessional, certainly, but I don't really feel that obese people deserve much respect in regards to their weight so it's hard to get real upset over it.

As a fat guy, let me say that I agree. I am usually pretty confused by fativists and the like. Being overweight sucks and people should strive to take care of it for their health and happiness.

Pretty much. I have no problem with a doctor saying "FAT PEOPLE MAKE OPERATING HARD, gently caress YOU", but jesus he is bad at humor.

I won't make fun of the morbidly obese, but I will say that it's easy to see how they make everything in medicine more complicated. Say you weigh 350 pounds. You are at a much larger risk than other people to develop a large variety of diseases, meaning there is a big possibility that once you arrive at a hospital, you'll probably be a repeat customer. In addition, without being a person involved in medicine myself, I can easily see how everything from routine procedures like lifting a person and taking blood tests to performing diagnosis and surgery will be much more complicated than for a person with a BMI below 35.

So while I don't particularly find fat people jokes that hilarious (they're done to death), hospital crew are among the people that have, in my opinion, the most legitimate reason to be annoyed at fat people. For the average person, morbidly obese are really not a large bother most of the time, for hospital crew, they are often a huge and recurring increase in workload. In that light I can kinda understand where the article comes from.

I work in a place where the vast majority of people are at the very least in "ok" shape. A large percentage of them are in good shape and an overly high amount of them are in amazing, top tier shape. Nevertheless, there are a few land whales roaming around. I think to myself "Wow, you must have 0 willpower if seeing all of these in shape people doesn't motivate you". Sometimes I think I'm a dick for thinking that, then I see the plates they pile high with food and I lose any remaining shred of sympathy.

I work in the medical field, and boy do people get made fun of, I can't tell you which ones due to HIPPA guidelines, but boy...

Actually you can judge a doctor on his sense of humor, if he's insulting of cruel to patients behind their backs, he's usually a lovely guy. Thankfully mine is the nice kind.

I am pretty sure people in the medical profession probably have some interesting things to say about those groups as well.

EDIT: I will try some for smokers.

Its not funny unless he is morbidly obese. Although if the weight is due to liver failure causing fluid buildup (ascites) in his body I guess you could argue thats a little funny.

BTW Orthopedic surgeons are the total broskis of the medical world. His colleagues will prolly congratulate him on the jokes.
