Bec, being the Guardian that he is, prototyped himself to protect Jade, on two counts: One, to shield the island from the meteoric explosion and two, (mild story spoilers that gowb may not have reached yet) to prevent the Bec-prototyped Jack Noir from harming Jade. It is explained in some conversation between Jade and Karkat. Bec fucks everything up, but in doing so, ensures Jade's safety from a major threat. He's not really just a dumb dog.
