I just finished episode three and the story is kicking along nicely. The Mayor is nice and vicious, Emma uses her "don't give a gently caress" powers to continue to stay and harass the Mayor despite all the warnings and we get to see a date go horribly wrong. Ahahah that was cruel and funny at the same time.

Between this and Grimm I'm getting an overload of fairy tales each week.

Mary Margaret needs about 16 more cats for her character to be believable though.

I do hope they give Regina a little more nuance than "Evil Queen who is always evil because she's evil". They have the opportunity to really mess with the dynamic by having her genuinely love her adopted son.

As others have pointed out, she *should* be furious at this interloper who her kid is clinging to. Just because she's the biomom doesn't mean she is fit to raise this kid. All the good behavior and manners that you see is due to Regina's hard work as a single mother and getting thrown over for the pretty blond lady by her son has to piss her off at a very basic level, evil queen or not.

Are they going to subvert the fairy tales or play them straight?

It does feel incredibly forced to have the mayor showing up to threaten Emma every few minutes rather than her going and doing something that asserts her power. She tends to appear and bluster for a bit so Emma can goggle at her and then does exactly what the mayor warned against. This is the first time there has been a negative consequence for defiance that I can remember. Up till now Emma boggles or throws some sass back and it all works out.

What I'm wondering is if she'll figure out that Graham's death is due to the mayor and go sleuthing. It's still hard to tell what they are going to make of this show but I like to tune in each week so good job on their part.

Somehow I don't think the problems of Storybrooke will be solved by smooching the "evil" queen but I'm willing to volunteer to see if it helps.

On a not-so-dorky tangent, do you think they will give Ruby a particular story or are they going to leave her as a background character? She's been established but they haven't done anything notable with her. Next week's episode is an entirely different legend so who knows.

Part of where the show goes wrong is that it fails to illustrate the rift between Henry and Regina. Why does Henry has a problem with her besides EVIL QUEEN? Why did Regina want him in the first place? Most importantly, what led Henry to turn to these tales?

This seems critical for future development. They need to give Henry some story time to show that the Evil Queen is also mean as hell to him and therefore worthy of our contempt. This would play neatly into the fairy tale setting they have and wouldn't be too disappointing for the series as a whole. Not every show benefits from moral ambiguity and grimdark writing.

On the other hand I really like the scenes where Regina shows up and is protective of Henry and looks concerned for her adopted son. She raised the boy and he's her son in the eyes of the law so having this interloper come in and lure the boy away is incredibly frustrating. She's been pretty reserved compared to the usual Jerry Springer-esque response you'd expect to this situation.

For me, the story plays well enough on its own merits of the real world is a shadowy nightmare of the fairy tale world that they are trying to wake up from. Regina's Evil Spell knocked them all into this place and it's only through the powers of Emma that normality (fairy land) can be restored. The mechanics of that week to week are what we tune in for, not a rumination on the rights of bio parents to adoptive parents or other weighty issues that this show doesn't seem competent to tackle.

The most important thing of all though is what was Mr. Gold burying in the woods with his creepy apron?

Huh, storm-damaged playground? Yeah, it kind of sucks but as an adult we all know that letting kids play on hazardous playsets is just not a good idea. Explaining that to Henry would have been a decent move rather than racing to confront Regina because RARGHGH SHE BAD! ME DEFEND MY BIOCHILD!

Maybe Emma is just under a spell of being dumb as rocks this episode because she really didn't even *try* to figure out what the hell was being built in the woods and accepted Sydney's story without question. Good job Nancy Drew!

As for David and Mary Margaret, holy crap that was pure goony awkwardness. Durr, everyone knows when you're trying to court two ladies at the same time that you write their initials on the envelope and sneak a peek before handing it over. This guy is so not pro at carrying on an affair.

Hopefully this episode is the setup for him to have the big fight and break up with his wife and Do What His Heart Tells Him and blah blah blah. Dragging out that romance is getting tedious.

Also, is Emma supposed to be getting dumber the longer she's in Storybrooke? "Oh gosh, I know you're evil ma'am but if you bring the kid around (temptation) I suppose you being alone with my prisoner is fine and dandy."

If Regina had killed Gold, what then? "Man, I am really terrible at this sheriffing stuff."

Oh sure, she's in the scenes but mostly looking befuddled or annoyed while Regina chews up the set.

She spends an awful lot of time looking baffled, perplexed, nonplussed or downright confused in this show. The siren was laughable in its cheesy, "wooOoOoO i am so *tempting*" nonsense with James. It's part and parcel for the story but man it would have been nice if James had reacted a little more strongly when a hottiepants lady suddenly pops up in his local watering hole. Oh Emma, you have to get out of Storybrook, you're changing into a complete idiot.

Leroy's story was excellent and I'm very happy with the end of it. Here's hoping that next week's Ruby story will be equally fun. On the other hand, if they don't give Emma some brains in the next few episodes it's going to get very hard to watch. She's supposed to be a tough, independent bounty hunter.
