Yeah but then again they're idiots who don't maintain their equipment at all basically. I'm willing to bet the problems the 400 has was due to them not winterproofing the equipment before leaving last year. If you leave stuff like that out for a year in an Alaskan winter, well..... e: Oh hey Harness is back. spankmeister fucked around with this message at Jan 21, 2012 around 15:45 |

Yeah, do you notice how at the Big Nugget Mine, they had like two or three things that broke, as opposed to the everything breaking at Porcupine or Quartz Creek? That's because Grandpa John knows his poo poo. A few thoughts from the most recent episode: - If they were going for a patriotic feel in Dakota Fred's grumpy rant, it fell flat for me. The guy forgot to have his on-site training, and this is some grand slight against America? ![]() - If you were looking for evidence that this show is either scripted or heavily edited for convenience sake, this episode would be exhibit A. The mechanic just happens to show up when they really, REALLY need him, and they just HAPPEN to find a gigantic final drive with all the parts they need on the side of the road? Okay. - Further proof that all of the Hoffman Crew is worthless: they just stand around and wait for Harness to diagnose the final drive, not helping him take the thing apart, and then when he's bedridden, they manage to get the whole track off the bulldozer. Where were they when he was killing himself? - Parker's "I gotta save the mine" story was ruined for me when I heard that the Big Nugget Mine is chiefly a tourist mine, and being 30 ounces short can probably be made up in tourism. - They mention that Parker's going to spend his last week of summer touring the bigger mines up north. If you watch the Gold Rush Aftershow, there's a preview for next week's, and Parker mentions none other than Tony!!!

Oh and Harness left to get his back problems sorted out but all he did was refill his script and he's basically as useless as before? Not to berate the guy he has serious serious back issues but really? Oh and by the way: O-ring failure in cold weather? Where have I seen that one before? Hmmm... Oh, right

Are they in the process of excavating a whole new dig site on the claim they are running this year without drilling first again?

More or less. They ran out of paydirt on that first cut that they did, so they have to clear another cut ASAP to get more gold. And presumably, they're doing it blind because they're idiots and are running out of time. At this point, I wouldn't be shocked if Parker's 33 ounces + whatever Grandpa John scrapes out ends up being the high tally of the season, but god only knows how much more dirt the Dakota boys have left to run.

I'd love to hear from small time miners in Alaska that do poo poo right and make money. I'm a drilling engineer and I go into a blind rage whenever I see Black Gold on trutv.

Apparently next week's episode features Grandpa John's heart attack and the idiot Hoffmans manage to find a nugget of some size. But tonight we've got a crew member apparently quitting, more shenanigans with the Dakota boys, and Parker Schnable doing something with another mining operation before he heads back to school.

What this show is missing is a tally of each crew's hours worked and how much more they'd each have if they had worked at McDonald's for minimum wage for the same amount of hours.

At the end of the season I am doing this if nobody else has. Once we have the totals. Also, I know they need to dramatize situations but some of it is just insulting to the viewer. "The 400 won't start..." (jump starts it and it is fine). "This is the only machine that can rip through the ice and the track has slipped in the middle of the wild..." (pushes track back on with the 400). "The D-Rocker is under stress, maybe too much..." (puts piece of wood under it). Love the show but this is insulting

I think somebody made the joke that the narrator just HAS to dramatize everything, like "if Todd can't step over this puddle, the Hoffmans WON'T be able to mine this season." Also, apparently the Dakota boys have only netted two ounces of gold since that one episode where they ran hard for a week straight. What the gently caress have they been doing since then?

Parker didn't make any money, and just rough he would have made $10 an hour times 40 hours a week times 12 week school summer vacation, $4800.
