This is a thread to talk about The Indoor Kids, which is on Chris Hardwick's Nerdist network of shows. Here is the description from their website:

quote:

The Indoor Kids isn't just about video games, but it isn't not about video games. The Indoor Kids is all about the kind of lifestyle you have to lead in order to be a proper Gamer, capital G. Join hosts Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon as they take on a journey from childhood Shinobi obsessions, up through the best and worst video game adaptations of movies. Grab your Energy Swords (Mountain Dew liter bottles)!

Download the show at: http://www.nerdist.com/podcast/the-indoor-kids/
iTunes the show at: http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/...ids/id450637314

I like this show because these guys love games, but are not Internet super nerds about games. I have nothing wrong with those kind of people (I am one myself) but I like that these guys aren't because it lends a different perspective to the genre of video game podcasts. Plus, I think Kumail is really funny and because they are on Nerdist they get a lot of good guests including comedians and gaming personalities. I also like that they have guests so on each episode they can explore why different people play games, the games they play, and so on.

Anyway, you should check it out because it's great.

If you only listen to one episode, the one with Carlos Ferro (voice of Dom in Gears of War, plus a lot of other voices in a lot of other stuff) is probably the best. They talk about Carlos' career but then they get really deep into what it means to be a gamer and all sorts of stuff about growing up and the escapism that games provide. It's incredibly interesting stuff. Here is a link to it: http://www.nerdist.com/2011/08/the-...6-carlos-ferro/

I love this show but I am super happy the first lady host got replaced. Always talking about internet memes in a place that wasn't the internet. It was annoying.

My favorite episode so far was 7 with Moshe Kasher and Brent Weinbach. They spend a lot of time talking about old videogame music and they get really into. I might have a new favorite in a bit but I have fallen behind,

The Carlos Ferro episode was great. I also really like the Aisha Tylor episode. She's hilarious and I love any podcast episode she's a guest on but her own podcast is loving awful.

Ironically, I think the best episode was the Tom Lennon one, as his addiction to videogames could be mapped out over his IMDB page with pretty good accuracy. His entire career just kind of stalls out around the release of Goldeneye in 1997. He goes from having his own TV show with Viva Variety, to doing bit parts for years. His lack of traction in acting seems to be what really fuels his writing career, which has made him the man his is today.

His hate for the fake band guitar game things was hilarious and true.

Dan Harmon is back on this week talking about Skyrim. I enjoyed his last appearance very much, even though they barely talked about games. Excited to listen to his thoughts on the game.

I'm about half way in and they pretty much focus on Skyrim which I'm totally OK with. Good episode IMO.

Well I guess it's lucky for me I'm not unarmed. Seeing as I'm....eating your beans.

I think it's awesome that Dan Harmon seems like he's gonna be a regular on this show. He's funny as poo poo and knows his games. I don't mind that these people aren't "gaming experts". If I wanted that I'd listen to Thumbs or Giantbomb. Sometimes it's just fun listening to people talk about what they enjoy. Kumail is loving adorable too.

I really can't believe people enjoyed the first Dan Harmon episode. I skipped the latest one because it was like hearing a freshman in college who was home over winter break trying to sound all intelligent and deep when really if you've taken any 200 level courses you know they're full of poo poo or at best are extrapolating to cover holes in their knowledge. At least Duncan Trussel would sometimes admit that he wasn't sure.

I thought the first Harmon episode was loving awful but I really liked his second one. Here's to hoping that if they have him back he does more of the second and none of the first.

The recent episode with Jordan Morris was great. I really liked the shoutout to Lost Levels, especially the Bio Force Ape chat. To be honest, I've gotten tired of the past few episodes of gushing about Skyrim, having no interest in it myself, and this was a nice change of pace.

I started going through the old episodes of the indoor kids and I have to really say. I am glad Ali baker is gone. She has been annoying me in the older episodes. She obviously knows her stuff, but she really isn't that funny or interesting. She also says like a boss way to loving much. Emily v Gordon seems to have a real sincerity to her, and she doesn't seem like she is trying so hard to be one of the boys which is how I felt Ali baker would act.

Ali Baker is really nice and all, but you're right, Emily is definitely a better host and has a lot more life experience, which I think fosters better discussion.

Emily really held the recent Live show together with Kumail not being there. I cracked up when she realized her mom would probably listen when she was talking about getting stoned and playing games.

I've seen a lot of comments related to the fact that they aren't video game journalists and don't know what they are talking about, so they get brushed off. While being true, I think that is what makes this podcast so charming and enjoyable to listen to.

Kumail and Emily are like the nicest people ever. On more than one occasion I've praised Kumail on messageboards or on twitter (without even tagging his name) and he's sent me private messages thanking me. I think he may be the best of the next crop of comedians, too.

Kumail loving owns. I loved the studio episode with Matt Mira and the church of Skyrim ones.

Definitely not the best videogame podcast, but, just awesome to listen to because they're so gosh darn funny and nice.

I definitely see him being a lot more recognized in 5 years.
Like other people have stated, I like this podcast a lot not because it is the most insightful about videogames or whatever it's just funny and they are cool people.

Pretty much, yeah. And it's nice to hear two people talk about their favorite game (Skyrim) and how much they love it just because, well, they love it!

They also managed the impossible, which is having Chris Hardwick on their podcast and not having him sing.

I really liked the recent episode with Devin Faraci and it's nice to hear from someone who isn't completely in love with Skyrim (although why he keeps playing these kinds of games even though he hates them, I'll never understand). However, even though I like Rockstar games a lot, they really don't have very good naratives. Good characters, yes, but the stories in the GTA games are just plain silly and all over the place.

Just got done with the Faraci episode and I loved the hell out of it. The Lost rant at the end had me in tears.

By definition tragedy is sad.

Was an good epsiode about game changers, but the discussion seemed more about 'games that changed me' rather than gaming as a whole. There's also still a lot of console talk, really wish they would talk about PC games or at least bring in a guest to talk about that.

I know it's nerdy and that they're just riffing, but one of them was talking about Shenmue where you could do mundane things in an open world, see changes in weather and night cycles, and stuff like that.

I just wanted to scream at them that Ultima 7 came out about 7 years before and let you actually bake bread and stuff. But, I know it's mostly about consoles and I'm a big nerd so I don't tend to think about it. It still bugs me, though...

And they had no idea what Zork was. "Does that take place in space? It sounds like space to me..."

Well the show isn't generally about gaming as a whole. It's about people who like video games and their opinions on video games. It's not from an industry standpoint, or a game journalism standpoint. The reason they don't talk about PC games is because they probably didn't play PC games growing up.

The only PC game they've ever really spent any time on was StarCraft and even then neither Kumail or Emily really had an experience with it. Emily eventually tried StarCraft and liked it but never really touched on much else with it. Of them two of them she is the only one that has had much PC gaming experience but it seems to be limited to stuff like Age of Empires.

Like what has been mentioned before the show is not a journalistic approach to video games, it is just them talking about video games and sharing their opinions with their guests.

To be fair, it's easy to mispronounce and I don't even think they say the word "Shenmue" until the middle of the second game, but for some reason it makes me really happy. Like when someone calls it "Mary-o" instead of "Mario" or when sonic collects "coins" instead of "rings." Plus, I know that somewhere out there it is driving some sperg crazy, which makes me even happier.

Maybe I'm just a fan of cool little word tics ("ticlones?")

It's what Kumail's family call video games, because in his native language apparently it describes how they sound.

Just wanted to say this is by far my favorite podcast, Kumail and Emily are really great and most of the topics they come up with for the episodes are fantastic. I'm especially a huge fan of Emily, I guess because it's easy to appreciate how much she's improved the podcast after replacing the original host. I dislike Matt Mira, but I really liked the live show he co-hosted with Emily and I'm not a huge fan of Pete Holmes and his podcast, but the You Made it Weird episode with Emily was really great.
