So there's apparently a Miles Davis movie coming out:

Apparently they have someone portraying Paul Chambers and Herbie Hancock but no Coltrane, what?

For those who don't know her, she's an incredibly talented bassist/vocalist. This new record sounds like it will skew a little more towards the rock/psychedelic side of jazz.

No Obvious Flaws

I decided to start collecting the Blue Note 1500 series on vinyl.

The first two records I bought were the first two releases, BLP 1501 and 1502. As they were the 1980s French re-releases I decided to stick with that for my collection (and everything else seems to be insanely expensive!)

I now have BLP 1501, 1502, 1503, 1504, 1505 and 1506.

Discogs is fantastic!

You know, I had high hopes for this cause Don Cheadle is both starring in it and directing, but then I saw the trailer... wow, it looks awful. Now I haven't real Miles in a few years, but I don't seem to remember an action-packed scene of Miles and the police returning gunfire in a high-speed pursuit. What a letdown.

I gave Esperanza Spalding's newest album Emily's D+Evolution a second listen today and drat, it's seriously good. Unconditional Love is easily the best song on the album, and while I don't really like the layered backing vocals on Good Lava, that bassline is just so nasty.

I think "One" is my favorite tune, but "Judas" gets stuck in my head a lot too. "Unconditional Love" definitely is more accessible than some of the other deeper tunes from the record. That song should be the single.

First track from the soundtrack to that Miles Davis movie has just been released. They got Robert Glasper to sample a studio outtake from the In A Silent Way sessions to create this sort of RnB style song and it actually sounds kind of cool:

It's not a biopic. It's a gangster movie with Miles as the main character sort of.

Cheadle has been learning trumpet for 7 years to play the part.

It will for sure be better than Ethan hawkes horrible portrayal of Chet Baker .

Seeing Hiromi tonight and I'm extremely stoked. Managed to get great seats the day tickets went live. Her new album, Spark, was just released Friday! Wondering if I should listen to it so I can appreciate the variations more tonight or just wait?! Argh. Also, I love that her tour somehow went through Geneva, Boston, Philly, New York, etc. and then ended up passing through the crappy town two miles away from me before continuing on to other amazing destinations, haha. I feel very lucky right now.

Yeah, it'll be her trio from recent albums. I just heard him playing on some 80's fusion album and he was just as ridiculous then as he is now.

Edit: what an amazing show. I just can't understand how they can put this level of effort in multiple times a week. Hiromi was like a loving piano demon. She broke a string on her Yamaha while slamming her forearm into the keys at the end of a crazy run she was playing standing up. I'm the hugest Corea fan, and it was like she took everything he does and added another layer of invention on top. The dynamics, technicality and fusion of every style were top notch at all times. Anthony Jackson played his crazy spaceship contrabass guitar and had the smoothest, yet dirtiest grooves going on. When they would break into swing sections it was awesome to see him walking around what looked like 300 little boxes inside of countless strings and frets. Simon Phillips at one point had an 8 minute drum solo while Hiromi and Anthony stood just outside of the light cheering him on and just watching. You got the sense that they are an incredibly tight trio - totally telepathic. If you can see them absolutely do it!

Saw Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band over this past weekend. Goddamn is Brian a hip cat, and he's just such a good fuckin drummer. They would just switch from an amazing back and forth with Brian and one of his horn players into some of the most lilting, beautiful soundscapes.

And I found out that next year for my alma mater's annual jazz festival we're getting... GRETCHEN PARLATO. :aaaaa:

Old Town Road to EGOT

I don't know if I've ever posted in this thread before, but I saw Kamasi Washington & The Next Step tonight and they were unbelievably good. They played several songs I wanted to hear, including Cherokee, Askim, Re Run, and Malcolm's Theme, which I think is a powerful song on the album but it was several times more powerful live somehow.

I've been singing the dude's praises for like a year ever since I first heard The Epic and it immediately became my favorite album of 2015, but I don't think many people I told about him listened to me. Still, the show was sold out tonight, probably due to Jazz Fest also going on this weekend here in New Orleans so there's a ton of out of towners here to see live music. Everyone seemed to be pretty into it and Kamasi said he loves this city and promised he'll be back, which is great.

Can anybody recommend me more stuff like The Epic? I know it combines several different styles of jazz, but jazz is a genre I've been wanting to dive deeper into for years and have no idea where to start, and maybe that could be a starting point. I have a few other jazz albums, like Coltrane's Giant Steps, Miles Davis' Birth of the Cool, Bitches Brew and Kind of Blue, and the entire Weather Report discography. Honestly, I don't even remember how I found out to get those. Maybe I asked this before at some point in NMD or elsewhere. But yeah, any recommendations you can give are appreciated.
