There will be so much face-rubbing when the question of Fujisaki's gender is never raised in the game at all because she is so obviously a female.

I am certain that something important to investigation is happening right now while Togami is keeping Naegi constrained. So, who is unaccounted for? Togami is with us. Fukawa has sealed herself in her room, Aoi is trying to get her out. Mondo and Sakura are keeping an eye on each other. So that leaves Ishimaru, Hifumi, Kirigiri, Hagakure and Celes. If it was something like, simply finding a piece of evidence or something then the scene doesn't need Naegi controlled. It has to be something more involved. So my hypothesis is: One of these five (four, let's discard Kirigiri) is the killer, and is currently trying to destroy evidence. Later a part of the investigation/trial will be dedicated to tracking what everybody was doing after the discovery of the corpse.

Plus they're thinking of the hints in western terms of female empowerment (as in Chihiro simply wanting to be stronger and able to defend her/himself) rather than through the lens of Otaku culture... especially considering the recent boom in TG/crossdresser characters. I'm not quite sure myself, but let's just say I don't see any people on this side of the argument insulting the ones thinking s/he is female.

Not only does the statement have an if clause, but the theory was brought up in a generic context. If the person is allowed to freely theorize, why can't they reference some of the more popular theories with sparse evidence, such as the claim that the Literary Girl is a serial killer. However, despite it being a theory and claim like any other theory/claim with its own batch of evidence, people are responding vehemently and aggressively against it. Why? Do they feel threatened? Are they under the perception that because people might imagine that x character is cross-dressing, that that person is some kind of creep? Do they not want to be in the same thread as said creep? The problem doesn't seem to be the theory itself, as it's a theory just like any other half-assed theory that's come up in this thread. The problem is the immense, unwarranted, and unnecessary backlash to an idea. EDIT: Also, a lot of the circumstantial evidence that might support the claim isn't in the events themselves, it's how the game is presenting the events. For example, a girl wanting to get stronger isn't in itself strange. Personal anecdote, I knew a girl once (a dancer) who wanted to work on her upper body muscles. Her lower body was very strong, but she felt that she looked lanky and disproportionate, so she worked hard on her upper body strength. In and of itself, the phenomenon isn't strange. However, the game is presenting it as out of place, unfeminine, and peculiar. The way the game is treating the subject matter is the evidence, not the fact that Chihiro wants to become stronger. Personally his/her shyness made me think she was a girl despite the theories of others (though it planted a seed of doubt since I know it's featured more in recent publications). Anyway there's a number of hints throughout the game, I'm not going to list them up, there are others who would be better at that, but the biggest flag was where s/he responded to Oogawa's belief that men must be strong with something like 'I want to be stronger'. In terms of women's emancipation that'd be 'she wants to be a strong, independent woman'. In an Otaku game that's basically saying that barring plot twists the character is a dude. cwDeici fucked around with this message at Jan 12, 2012 around 23:07 |

The theory initially gained traction because we were just shown a set of gender-based locks and it was pretty much guaranteed that they were going to play a role in the next case one way or another. So it's not like people were just HAY GUYS I'M PRETTY SURE CHIHIRO IS ACTUALLY A CROSSDRESSER out of the blue for no game-related reason. ...well, okay, several people did do exactly that back when she was introduced. But nobody really gave a poo poo until we got the giant red flag proclaiming that there was going to be some kind of gender-based twist.

I'll continue posting safe art in the thread for people to enjoy. Now what sort of twist would be given away by fanart and cosplay? I can think of two possibilities that could be revealed by the end of this chapter: 1. The identity of Genocider Syo. 2. Somebody is not the gender we think they are. Since I don't think they'll tell us flat out who Genocider Syo is just yet (and it's too soon for him/her to be the real killer), that explains why people have latched on to the latter idea. Personally, I'm not sure. There might be a third possibility that none of us could have guessed. Wyvernil fucked around with this message at Jan 12, 2012 around 22:55 |

We start with the premise "Gender is going to be important", move to "Gender will be a twist" which implies "Someone is crossdressing/transexual". From there, we ask WHO could be crossdressing, and the moment we ask the question (or the moment *I* asked the question, at any rate) up pops Chihiro stating she doesn't want to be seen in a swimsuit, refuses to enter the gender-locked-doors for any reason despite stating desire to do so, and keeps hiding and skulking around the issue, again despite showing specific interest in the subject ("getting stronger", "train with me", etc). When you have the conclusion "SOMEONE is going to have gender issues" then the question of who it is, is pretty plain. Blatent even. Extremely obvious in pseudo-retrospect. If gender wasn't going to be an issue at all, no, I agree, there's nothing to say that Chihiro is anything but shy, although if you have a proverbial gerbil on your shoulder as that one guy did (who also thinks our protagonist is trans And there is PLENTY of reason to do so in this chapter.

Mixed-gender cosplay is sort of a thing, regardless of character. You'll see a lot of girls trussed up as, say, Metal Gear fellas or their favourite stud from whatever anime they're watching, and a fair amount of guys shuffling about as female characters. It's more common in Japan, I think, but at the same time I saw the most amazing male Mystique at the last San Diego Comic Con I made it to. I just want to say, guys, we really don't have enough evidence to be putting theories together like this. A lot of this is blind-firing based on a vague indication of something. I think the only concrete point we can make is, Togami is being awfully leading - suggesting he's up to something, as has been discussed. Clearly the IDs are going to come into play at some point, but there are many ways they could be used for ~nefarious misdeeds~ above and beyond simple gender camouflage. With Kirigiri examining the body as closely as she is, there's certainly something more to discover from Chihiro's remains. It might be an issue of gender. It might also be that she died not from a head wound, as the autopsy report states. It could also be that she's a kleptomaniac and has loot stashed all over her body. This is a game about misdirection. Don't become too glued to any one hypothesis, until we know enough for the trial. doomfunk fucked around with this message at Jan 12, 2012 around 23:03 |

I'm of the opinion that there isn't any solid way to determine it for now, so I've been theorizing off of both possibilities. Incidentally, the locks, as presented, don't pose too much of an obstacle for the killer nor the victim, because there were both female and male cards available for use. Remember, the murder occurred while most of everyone was asleep, so any number of cards could have been shuffled around between the changing rooms and the storage bin before and after the murder. Now, we don't know which room the murder occurred in, nor do we know whether the inoperable card is Chihiro's or Leon's. These are the two crucial pieces of evidence that would allow us to determine for sure whether Chihiro is female or not, because if the murder happened in the male changing room and the inoperable card is Leon's, there you go. Otherwise, if the murder occurred in the female changing room, we still can't know for certain, because if Chihiro was female, she'd have her own card and the killer could just take one of the two dead ladies' cards. On the other hand, if Chihiro was male, that wouldn't present an issue, because there would still be two female cards available for use. Until we get someone else's testimony about that evening, any number of things could have happened. I guess what I'm mostly saying is that there isn't sufficient evidence to make a definitive case for either one, so there's no point in getting angry over it.

By the way guys, one thing is bothering me about the theory that Chihiro was killed in the male changing room, and I hope you guys would be able to provide an explanation. You see, while it's all well and good to say that the carpet and poster could have been moved without creating a mess, if you're going to write something as intricate as the Bloodstain Fever message, you're going to need a decent flow of blood coming out of Chihiro's forehead, right? So if she was transported between rooms, where's the blood on the floor between the rooms? It looks like it's carpeted, so getting it out would be hard if it was there, and I don't see the killer being able to prevent Chihiro from bleeding and write that message at the same time. I've got two ideas about that myself, though I can't be sure if they make sense. First, she could have been wrapped in the carpet and carried that way, but it's a pretty big carpet, so I'm not sure how likely that would be. Alternatively, it could just be that the killer hit her in the head again after moving the body to start up the blood flow again after it was clotted the first time. Be a lot easier to transport the body if it isn't bleeding, after all.

Chihiro might go to him naively trying to persuade him over to her position though. It seems like the sort of thing she would do.

I really hate it... being so weak...
Ah, I see, so it’s Oowada’s fault you feel down...
Huh, my fault!?
I didn’t have any bad intentions, did I!? Isn’t it natural for girls to be weak, for the most part!?
U...uuuuu...uuuuu......
H...hey... Are you crying...?
It’s because you raised your voice at her, isn’t it...?
H...hey, don’t cry... I... I’m sorry... I won’t shout again...
Y...you don’t have to be so mean...!
Your word... as a man...?
I told that story before...
“Left”...?
Aa... My brother is dead...
I’m... sorry...
Well, let’s leave that story for another time. I can’t let my eyes get wet right now!
But anyway... I will definitely not shout at you again. So you don’t have to cry anymore!

Thank you... Oowada-kun...
S...sure....
...No, I want to become stronger.
