The previous poster is wrong.Visiting Greybeards only allows you to learn additional 2 words of Unrelenting Force and one word of Whirlwind sprint. It doesn't affect learning of other shouts.Just select the shout you want to learn and press R.It will do the trick.

You have to hit R to unlock it, just clicking it gives the prompt but doesn't actually unlock it for some reason.

I'm a little wary of the permanently breaking alchemy bug that could create but I'll give it a shot.

This is pretty much how I got smithing up to 100 fairly quickly this time around since jewelry is valuable. It also has the added benefit of leveling your Alteration skill and getting rid of gems you might be lugging around.

If you don't want to pay for the spell, there's a Transmute spell tome in the mine at Halted Stream Camp.

I don't know, I just assumed it was like any other spell you could buy. But actually looking it up, you can occasionally buy it from Enthir and Tolfdir will sell it once your Alteration skill hits 50 (both at the college of course).

Otherwise apparently it's also found at Knifepoint Ridge and somewhere in Ansilvund.

I decided that was too much work, but after I used console cheats for it I sort of got tired of being a wizard. Who knew absolute invincibility would be boring?

With a bow, does sneak attack damage stack with the Critical Shot perk?

Lima
Jun 17, 2012

You can get a cricital shot on a sneak attack, but the damage from it isn't multiplied.
The crit damage is also based off your weapon's base damage, so it'll be negligible if you go nuts with smithing.

Sneak, obviously, then Smithing(this one is must for anyone) and Illusion. Stamina regen perk from Light Armor is also recommended. You'll also may want pickpocket..you know, just because it's hilarious.

e: Actually, I wrote a post about my suggested sneakthief skill set a while ago. Here it is.

There's nothing stopping you from being an archer that wears heavy armor, if you like. Spec into Heavy Armor and the right-side of Smithing.

For what it's worth, my newest character's a heavy armor archer and I'm doing okay. I'm not a dedicated archer, I just pump people full of arrows until they come in range of my 2-handed weapon, but I don't see any reason it couldn't work.

I'm a dual-casting destruction mage, and even I've got a bow for the occasional long-range attack if an enemy hasn't seen me yet. I also use it for dragons whilst they're flying around, since I'd rather waste arrows than mana whilst I'm trying to hit them before they land. I even carry a one handed mana draining mace around and go spellsword with a restoration spell in my other hand on occasion if I heading into a potential short range situation.

Like GrumpyDoctor said, it's difficult to build a character that isn't going to work in some way or another.

Can you tell me how Gunnerkrigg Court was built?

After playing a lot of a sneaky character, I wanted to try my hand at the complete opposite and play a heavy armour, two-handed trotting tank. I'm going with two-handed (obviously), heavy armour, smithing and enchanting, but what would be some good ideas for rounding him up? I was planning on going block and restoration, but switching from two handed to magic takes a bit of time so I'm not sure it's really worth it, and I'm not sure whether some block perks (like elemental resistance) apply to blocking with a weapon instead of a shield. Maybe archery would be a good addition?

Deflect arrows, Elemental Resistance and Shield Charge(there's a bug you can use, but it's obviously not intended to work this way) do not work without shields. Everything else does.

Ah, gotcha. How feasible is to go both one and two-handed and switching up on demand, seeing as I will be using the block tree either way? I'm not sure how my guy will hold up against wizards and forts filled with archers without the block bonuses.

It would work, but you are wasting too much points this way (only my opinion, of course). 2H-based characters do just fine again ranged enemies. You just need either to close the distance fast (Whirlwind Sprint helps a lot) or stagger your opponents until you get in melee range(FUS RO DA). Mages can't do much when you are meleeing their face with a big battleaxe.
It may also be wise to use wards against them if you plan investing in restoration anyway.

Ah, cheers. I keep forgetting about the other shouts, I always max out fus ro da (and the project voice one for the sneaking) and don't even consider the whirlwind one, but it makes a lot of sense.

I have to admit, after getting my rear end handed to me whenever my sneaking failed because my char did poo poo damage, it's kind of cathartic to just walk up to people and one hit them via battleaxe to the face.

You're hardly wasting points if it's what you want to do, if you're going to be using shields, one handers and two handers as your combat stuff what else would you really put points into? There are more than enough to max out the good stuff in those trees and still get the stuff you want from smithing and enchanting maxed.

Transmute iron ore to gold ore. Smelt gold ingots. Incorporate jewels with these to make as expensive jewelry as your gems allow. Requires no perks and makes you money, and also helps level up alteration. It does require you to do enough dungeon diving to get the gems though. You can purchase iron ore cheaply without even having to go mine it.

Mining out Kolskeggr Mine is also a really quick way to get absurd amounts of gold ore. You get over fifty on the first swing through and the gold ore mining nets a bunch of random jewel drops.

Yeah, that was my plan. One handed is too low by now and it'll take me a lot of perks to make it worthwhile. I'll level block a bit and get the arrow and elemental protections and hotkey in and out of it.

Then you go search them and find that they have 10 Iron arrows when they clearly where pegging you with elven ones .

Do you have a high Block skill? A light shield with the Deflect Arrows Blocking perk is very effective. Even as my light sneaky archer/one-handed character it is just so satisfying to hear the archer helplessly plink arrow after arrow off your shield as you conduct the Pain Train in their direction. My favorite kills are doing this then using a whirlwind sprint to close the last distance followed by a random decapitation from the Savage Strike one-handed perk.

Edit: If you don't have a high block just go and get wailed on by some mudcrabs for a while. Or if you are leveled enough bears, sabre-cats, giants, or Cicero from the Dark Brotherhood. Be careful with the last one because he hits very hard and very fast.

It seems the bandit leaders level up with you but the other bandits don't, or at least not nearly to the same degree. I cleared out a bandit camp one-shotting them all with sneak iron arrows until I got the the leader. She was sitting there with her back turned to me and I hit her with a sneak arrow shot which took a millimeter off her health bar. She then wailed the crap out of me with an elven war axe while blocking perfectly with a Dwemer shield and wearing steel plate armor.
