There are a few things I've noticed that me and a few of my friends have discovered during the playing of this game.

-The "Trouble in Skyrim" quest can be bugged, if you finish the quest and it's marked as "finished" in your quest log without you having done the last step of the quest (return to the questgiver), return to the questgiver and simply choose the option "Do you have any work for me?" or something along those lines. It'll be greyed out since you technically already did the quest, so it's easy to miss. He'll give you the same quest over again (although you'll have the bugged one in your questlog forever along with the working one).

-An easy way to constantly be rolling in gold early on is to save any silver ingots or silver ore (through mining or etc.) and any gems you might pick up and then forge jewelry with them. If a town has a general store you can easily sell them there and almost always get a good chunk of gold while cleaning out their reserves in one go.

-If you're playing a melee character, attack the dragon from behind when it lands, not in front.

I'd also like to correct a mistake in the OP, Sven is the one that will join you if you tell the truth about the letter, Faendal will join if you deliver it to its recipient without doing so.

Even if I'm wrong, that doesn't mean you're right.

edit:^^^

Actually the Sven/Faendal thing depends on what you have done. If Faendal has rewritten Sven's letter than you are correct. Same thing if you get the quest from Faendal. But if you deliver Sven's note directly from Sven, or deliver Faendal's note after showing it to Sven the OP is correct. Basically what you have to say to get a particular ending depends on who started the quest and whether you did the optional segment.

Do perks on the Block tree help as a two-hand weapon user?

Perks that specifically require a shield in the block tree won't help, but perks that don't specify a shield will still add to your block. Ironically shield wall is a perk that works without a shield.

No, the OP is correct. Sven is the bard that gives you the letter to be delivered. Faendal is the Elf that will appreciate it if you tell the truth about it.

This was exactly the opposite in my game. Faendal wanted me to deliver the letter. Is it randomized perhaps? For reference, I am playing on the PS3.

EDIT: Looking at it the wiki I've kinda conjectured that it's whoever you talk to first. I spoke to Faendal first and he asked me to deliver the false letter.

Probably. (On PC) I tried talking to Faendal a bunch of times before starting the quest and the only option was to have him train me in Archery. Perhaps there's a specific trigger that makes him talk about the girl and then lets you start the quest that way?

That's funny, though. I thought he was a good guy.

All I remember is that when I spoke to him I had the option asking about him, Sven, and the girl. What likely happened is that some NPCs were having a conversation about it which then allowed me to bring up the subject.

This is just making me appreciate how much effort Bethesda put into making little elements of quests different depending on how they're approached in any case.

At the end of Dwemer ruins there are devices that 'require a specific item' to use. They look like giant Dwemer switches with three glowing blue crystals showing through a hole in the faceplate. I assume the item I need comes with a quest related to all Dwemer ruins -- where do I pick up this quest?

I posted this yesterday but it probably got lost in the shuffle and should be in the FAQ

Magic: Higher skill = less mana. They seem to scale about the same percentage from 100% mana at level 1 to 60% mana at level 100. A 105 mana spell will cost 63 mana at level 100.
Weapons: Higher skill = higher damage. Both Bows and 1-handed seem to scale at the same speed, 100% damage at level 1 150% damage at level 100. A 8 damage weapon will be 12 damage at level 100. Arrow damage does not scale on top of bow damage.
Armor: Higher skill = more armor. 100% armor at level 1, 140% armor at level 100 (for light armor). A 22 armor Stormjockey Armor is 30 armor at level 100.

I don't know if like armor/weapons, spells also gain damage from skill ups. I mention this because a slightly broken thing I've come across is bound weapons.

I've done battle mage and my friend has been straight archery/sneak. I told him as soon as I got summon bow (conj 53, archery 48) the damage on it was insane(glass bow + elven arrows was about 54 and the summoned bow was 94). He quickly got conj to 50 and got summon bow and his damage more than doubled (he had 70+ archery).

Basically barring Daedric, Bound Bow is going to be the highest damage bow you can get for some time. Also it will level 2 skills when you use it (3 if you are sneak attacking with it). I might try using console to boost up conjuration without touching archery to see if it will boost the bow's damage. If so that means that both conjuration and archery will boost your weapon's damage...

I don't think Dark Brotherhood membership is typically via killing an innocent in this game. I'm quite sure (and this is what I needed to do) you need to visit the Aretino residence in Windhelm, a boy is trying to summon the Brotherhood and mistakes you for one of the members. You do the contract for them and it all stems from there.

If I want to go digging around in game files and trying to modify NPC behaviour or whatnot, is this possible before the Creation Kit is released? If so, what program would I use?

HOO-DAH!!! Fatal Wiimote blow to the face, 20 points!

Man, only 5 skills generally recommended? I'm putting points in One Handed, Destruction and Alchemy mostly, with some single points in stuff like Smithing and Lockpicking. The problem I'm having is perk point hoarding. I'll have extra points but the skills won't be high enough to unlock new perk choices, so I'll dump them into some lower level stuff.

Is it that hard to get to the end of a tree (perk point wise) for a skill you use regularly?

Is there a way to completely remove shadows from the game? They are ugly as sin and warp around annoyingly even on the higher detail levels, and the game looks so much better and runs better without them. I read somewhere that this in the ini file should do it:

fShadowDistance=0.0000
fInteriorShadowDistance=0.0000
fShadowLODStartFade=0.0000

It does.. Most of the time. Some people / light sources still cast shadows while most don't, which is strange. Ideas?

Go to the first village you have visited.(River...something?) Follow the road south/eastwards until it leads up the mountain in serpentine curves. The stones should be at the first or second bend. You'll spot them on your compass as well, the symbol is an upright stone with a hole in the top part.

edit: Note that those are only the three most basic stones (though their effects are immensely helpful at the beginning) There are many more of them scattered throughout the land and at some point you may want to exchange the +xp effect for something more specific.

Yes, but only if you kill them. Enemies will attack your hirelings until near death, when the hireling will crouch down and enemies will ignore them. Make sure you don't accidentally hit them at this point, because you will murder them for good.

They can also die if they are attacked to the point of yielding in an area where they will continue to take damage, e.g. someone cast firewall, they get knocked back in a fight into a trap/blade gauntlet, or are still getting hit with area effect spells because they are near you or another friendly NPC. It's rare but it does happen and it may take you a bit to notice they are gone, normally when you discover you can turn around in a corridor without getting stuck.

It seems to depend on where you pick it up. In Oblivion there was a mod that modified the skeletons of people and common animals .. It made the upper thigh or something really light. So different parts have different values.

Try picking up the body by the chest, that seems to work for me.

All weapons skills + heavy armor under Warrior.

Sneak, Lockpick, Speechcraft, and Light Armor fall under Thief. (Don't quote me on light armor)

Spell Schools + Enchanting go under Magik.
