mushroom_spore posted:You forgot to include dragons. Their shouts use magicka; I've drained dragons so dry that they barely manage to say one syllable before I zap their reserves back down to nothing, cancelling the shout and leaving them just sitting there looking confused. Also the shock ranged spell is a hitscan meaning it hits exactly where your mouse is pointing the second you hit the button so it's way easier to hit them when they're flying around.

Rune spells get overlooked a lot, but they're amazingly effective at crowd control and as traps. If there's a large group of enemies gathered together I usually open up with either a frost or shock rune. Whatever manages to get through is usually really low on health making them easy pickings for melee combat. However, even though they're apprentice level spells, they drain more magicka than the adept level AoEs so if you're going to use them, combine it with a fortify destruction potion for more damage. With Dragonborn, you can also get Azhidal's Helm of Vision, which increases the cost of rune spells, but increases their effective range.

So I haven't played in about a year, and I want to run through Dawnguard and Dragonborn. My main character was a 2-hand Nord who basically walked around in heavy armor and knocked heads off. This was fun for a while, but got kinda boring...I'm wanting something new for my return. I'm thinking either a Khajit thief/Nightblade type character, but I'm worried about trivializing the game with bows. Also, when I tried a Spellsword I found Destruction to be very lackluster unless dual cast. My other idea is a "Paladin" type...HA, one-hand/shield and restoration. Probably an Orc. I'm still leaning toward the stealthy character because Khajit rule and I never got to do the DB quests on previous play throughs. With the new expansions, which of these is more viable/more likely to be fun? I'm using SPERG, so my perk choices will be different.

It's extremely easy to trivialize the game and get bored if you go stealth+bows. I played a dagger-wielding stealth character with a self-imposed no-ranged-weapons rule a while back and that was fun, but fighting dragons was really loving annoying. With Bend Will or Dragonrend it wouldn't be a problem at all, though. If you want to go sword-and-board, or really any melee-heavy build, it's hard to find a better race choice than Orc. Their berserk ability is insanely goddamn good and can basically turn you into an invincible titan for sixty seconds. I don't know much about SPERG, but unless it's completely changed the basic mechanics of the game, the above should still be fairly accurate.

Using SPERG you can make some pretty strange builds work. One handed + Alteration + Pickpocket is a favorite. No shield, no offhand weapon, just whatever spell works at the moment. I generally had fast heal in my offhand. It's hard starting out, but once you get one of those skills high enough you're an unstoppable force, and you don't have to carry much around. You can even forgo the weapon, but I like using a fancy dagger. This could work as a sneaky build, but I never actually found sneak necessary.

I don't know if SPERG adds any rebalancing, but with how easy sneaking is in vanilla, it's indead perfectly possible to one-shot sneak attack nearly everything and that will probably get boring after a while. I just thinned out big groups of enemies. If you really don't want to touch sneakattacks, stealth itself can still be fun. Try sneaking up on some bandits, drop an expensive gem near some bandits and watch them start fighting eachother over it. Destruction can feel underwhelming - especially when compared to how insanely overpowered sneakattacks can get. But it can still be very usefull to throw out a fireball or two before engaging in melee to soften up the bad guys. When you all mention Spellsword builds, does that really mean anything specific other than 'take 1H and destruction, suit otherwise to taste'?

I'd drop block for a Skyrim spellsword build. It's a giant pain in the rear end swapping around between spells and shields or empty hands to bash, and in the rare case you can be arsed to do it, you don't need any Block skill to punch some fool in the face.

My spellsword was a two-hander. That makes hotkey-play a lot easier. He was Two-Handed, Block, Light Armor, Destruction(fire), Illusion, Alteration, Alchemy (My goal with that character was to make a Skyrim version of Geralt.) Lycus fucked around with this message at Apr 24, 2013 around 20:47 |

Two-Handed and Block? Is parrying with a two-hander actually effective/affected by points in the Blocking tree, then?

Yep. The base perk, all the perks on the right side (excluding the top) and the center perk all apply to both shields and two-hand blocking. The left side (including the top) are the shield-only perks.

It actually sounds pretty loving metal to bash some guy in the face so hard with the hilt of your sword he dies, but I've never been able to bring myself to invest in 2H. Every build I've ever made uses 1H because it flows better with sneaking and spells

2H+Block is an excellent combination and is what I first won the game with. You can power-bash dudes to stagger them wildly and possibly disarm them, then lay in with a power attack while they're totally defenseless. You can also bait power attacks while blocking to go into bullet-time and hammer some fool's kidneys with your battleaxe 6 times before he even realizes you've just attained warp speed.
