http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3p22lzEmTXQ Goddamn I love it when Saints Row introduces me to a song I've never heard before, whenever this comes on I gotta rock the gently caress out. I swear the game is coded for it to appear only when you're balls deep in the middle of something awesome, it makes everything turn into a super jaunty sing-a-long smilefest.

Yeah, so far, I really have to agree with the sentiment that the writing for characters in this game (as far as I've played) is phenomenal, but the writing for the story smacks of them designing all the setpieces and The gameplay itself is fun enough to make up for that, though. I was worried how they were going to top SR3 from all the previews, and now I'm pretty sure I know how they could: ratchet themselves in a bit on the story so they can marry the storytelling of 2 with all the gameplay improvements (and any they come up with) of 3. Actually, there is one gameplay aspect I felt stepped back a bit: activities being only one level per location. I kind of liked just tucking into an activity in 2 and being there for a while, having fun with the gameplay slowly getting harder/different until I beat the whole thing, with the option to leave and come back later. Now, if I want to chew through a whole set of activities, I have to get to the point in the story missions that they're introduced in (which is another move that I disliked) and then hop across the whole town to find the spots they're in. Really, though, this is hardly me going

I'm like 9 challenges away from 1000/1000 and already 100%'d the game, but to be fair, I had a head start on everybody. Still, it does feel like SR3 as it is right now has less meat to it than SR2, which makes me both excited for more DLC and disappointed that it's not already in the game. I mean, I got TONS of added playtime in SR2 doing co-op story missions and the like, but since that's not an option here, pretty much all I can do after beating the story is just mindlessly work toward completion. I don't know what it's missing, but there's just something that isn't there.

The shark-o-matic is the best thing ever, especially since it works indoors. That's right, nothing makes a firefight in a penthouse or on a rooftop better than A loving SHARK crashing through every floor of the building and eating some dude who was shooting at you.

It's driving me mad that I can't get the DLC until SR3 is officially released here on Friday, I'd have hours of fun with that shark gun and I'll very likely shell out for the season pass too. It'll be interesting to see how the DLC pans out, hopefully the smaller storylines means they won't have SR3's problem of suffering for its ambition by being all over the place. If they introduce small, detailed story arcs with more care and detail than SR2's poor attempts at DLC then it'll be well worth it.

Haha holy poo poo. I found a place where construction spawned across the entire roadway both lanes, and traffic didn't know what the gently caress to do so cars just started full speed ramming into it sending barrels and construction workers and cars everywhere. Also my plan to kill the helicopter hitman by crashing a snipes full speed into him worked better than expected.

I can't believe that just in the first few missions my character has flown through a plane, stolen a high-grade military weapon, put a grenade in a weird 'roided giant's mouth AND (and this is the best of all) sang a motherfucking duet with Pierce. HOLY poo poo I LOVE THIS GAME.

I beat the game earlier and got the good ending, had like 70% activities done and 50% assassinations. Clocked in at juuust under 15 hours. *Significantly* shorter main game compared to SR2, which is dissapointing, but still compelling enough that I'm going to play it a second and probably third time. I do have two fairly major gripes though. I wish they had done more with the activities, for as many of the activities were straight up pulled from SR1/2, I wish they had brought more variety than basically the heli assault and mayhem/tank mayhem and snatch. I was kind of hoping Fuzz, and Septic Avenger had made it in much to my disappointment. The new activities they had were loving amazing but seemed to be over way too quick. Genki's SERC was goddamned amazing. Cyber blazing was also really cool and a neat twist on standard trailblazing. Eye of the tiger was quite possibly the most fun activity I had in the game and there was just loving one of 'em. Second gripe is that all in all the story feels like it is very rushed. I remember checking my mission progress once I had finished all those activity side missions and the game proper started and I was already past halfway done with the game. Hell, that mission that the Giant Bomb quick look was doing was like the 5th from the last actual mission (Quite a few of them counted for more than one mission, for example what I consider the entirety of the last mission the game counts as 3 missions). The game felt like it was trying to be a non-stop action climax without ever stopping to actually take in what happened. SR2 actually took time to show the consequences of the poo poo that was going on around you, see Aiesha's death/funeral and Carlos' Death, the continuing escalation between the saints and whatever gang they are fighting at the moment, et al. With how the story escalates in this game it feels like you are fighting one and a half of saints row 2's gangs, with the entirety of the syndicate being effectively the one gang and STAG being the half. Honestly, the syndicate is basically one gang that comes in 3 different colors and clothing styles and specialists depending on where you fight them. Each gang shares 2 of the 3 gang car styles and use the same gang icon (that hollow star symbol). If they had taken time to deal with the fallout of Johnny/Lauren's/Kiki's death,or had some high ranking named lieutenants or something in the enemy gang to deal with, or did more with Oleg/the brutes/the cloning facility/the STAG zombies/Daedalus, or any number of similar things I would of been much happier with the main campaign mode in this game.

No body, no funeral, just a throw away line from Shaundi? Are we sure there isn't any missing content/cutscenes? So, yeah, I have to agree about the story stuff. The game is fun, but the story does feel weirdly rushed and disjointed. I'm curious how people who didn't play SR2 feel about it. I think I'd be confused not knowing who any of these people are or anything about them.

My first few hours in Steelport were a bit frustrating. First thing I did was to try a carjacking job for some starter cash. Got the car but turns out I had to drive halfway across the loving city with cope chasing after me, helicopter snipers blew up the car and killed me just as I was getting to the drop-off. Other attempts to do stuff kept ending in death. Still once I finally got some upgrades things started working out. What really helped was I met Professor Genki walking near a Insurance Fraud mission (no longer having to hit the trigger to take a dive is a vast improvement.) Taking down Genki was not easy as he had a rocket launcher and drat good aim. Plus Morninglight punks started jumping in to help Genki. I finally managed to take him down (not easy as he had a poo poo ton of health and I had starter weapons and dual-wielding pistols. Worth it though, I was 100k richer for doing it. Bought every upgrade available and maxxed out two guns, pistol and SMG. Explosive and Incendiary bullets really make things much easier.

After the mission "Stag Party", is it just me or is it incredibly weird that the Saints HQ crib is in fact intact, and not utterly destroyed? I mean, I just watched it get blown to bits, find myself in the lobby five seconds later and when I go up, it's perfectly fine except for a few bulletholes and bloodstains. What the hell?

So...I'm only a few missions in and I have to say....I am kind of disappointed right now! The graphics (besides the peds) seem a bit worse, the gameplay is much more arcadey and a little glitchy, and everyone saying that the game is so short and that half of the storyline is actually doing activities is really starting to get on my nerves. This kind of really sucks. But I'll keep playing. Maybe I'll be wrong. Edited for clarification: Getting on my nerves because if that is the case...why would they do that?! I'm having a lot of fun with this so far, although it bothers me a little that Shaundi isn't very Shaundi-esque. I know that the voice actress changed, but they also changed like her whole attitude. Girl needs to take some bong hits and chill out a little. Also, they just HAD to change the whole control scheme on PS3. The way it is now is probably better, and more in line with how most of these game types play, but after having just played through SR2 again my muscle memory is all hosed up on what I'm doing sometimes. Like my brakes are where my drift/handbrake should be so instead of dramatically skidding around corners I just politely ease down to a stop before turning. And sprint is in the wrong place, so when I get in trouble and panic I end up hitting every button except sprint and so I like, bunny hop and then toss a grenade 2 feet from myself. Which works half the type, but still, I'm like a special needs Boss right now... Having a good time though. On my way to the second mission I got distracted and stopped to do a gang takeover spot which got way out of control and led to me sprinting helplessly toward the mission marker after every car in the vicinity had already blew up while a helicopter shot at me and I yelled "aaaugh SERPENTINE" as I dodged bullets.

Unless you just mean that you don't think you can purchase it anywhere, in which case you are correct.

It feels like it's harder to shake gang notoriety in this game than SR2. It's not long before they start busting out their heavy troops when I go on a gang killing spree and I just try to take down as many as possible until I dropkick myself into a car and drive to a nearby safe house. I definitely feel like I get into more gang fights than I did in SR2. It's fun.
