Or leave out one of the components (lighting, table/flat thing, chair/sitty thing). They don't really do much for you, the player. My "room" is usually a bed and a huge array of chests with a crafting station in the middle. (Yes, chair+table is used to craft a couple of things but they're not something you want to make often)

I thought of that but technically your basic work bench and the bed satisfy the "flat surface and comfort item" requirements leaving only the size, light source and back wall requirements, and the latter two have their own benefits.

Long story short there are ways of making sure NPCs don't squat in your house besides making it only accessible via grapnel.

Well, I guess making it almost entirely out of platforms just far enough part to fit a chest between them makes not suitable for NPC housing.

The proest housing option in the vanilla game is to (eventually) just move into a metal house on one of the floating islands and have a pool of water on the ground level to fall into (until you get fall damage negating items).

No the proest is to build a floating building just offscreen (at least at the resolutions I play at) just in hook range with the platform for the entryway. Right over your shaft to hell.

Sorry but the proest is to live in a sprawling underground city/labyrinth made from interconnected home/bomb shelters, with hand-built tunnels (bricks or blocks, none of that raw stone or dirt poo poo) linking them together, and the surface exit/entry is a little fortified pillbox thing with arrow slits and possibly automated arrow traps for defense, surrounded by a lava moat. There are similar fortified chokepoints underground leading into various cave networks.

Unfortunately, the proest house is also one of the more time-consuming and frustrating houses to build. It was fun the first time but I don't think I'll ever do it again. (I imagine it would be a goddamn nightmare in Hard mode too)

Excuse me, but can you fire your hook up offscreen and then BAM you're in your house? No? I rest my case.

The fact that you dug all of that space out is impressive enough

Also I finally got into the Red Cloud mod and it's indeed pretty sweet. Made the mistake of venturing into unknown territory in the Earth Temple during a Blood Moon and got slaughtered by Parasprites. Respawned next to the big pool there and found hundreds of them floating around in the water Good time to grind though, and I don't think I ended up losing any souls in the process.

I'm a little confused as to what the mod will let me do and what it expects me to carry over from regular Terraria...

-Obviously you can't dig/mine unless it's a 1-block wide spot, and you can't place blocks or platforms. What other environment-shaping acts are OK or not OK? I've been digging up pressure plates with a Pickaxe and chalking it up to some nebulous Disarm Traps skill, is that cheating? What about the single patches of crystals that are lying around, do those mark things or can I mine them for crafting?

Speaking of crafting, what crafting from the base game is allowed in the mod? The village has every crafting station you could think of but it's not like there's much farming or mining you can do here outside of soul gathering. Are soul-using recipes the name of the game or can I make base game recipes here, like potions and whatnot?

Harvesting plants, gel, coins, crystals,,enemy drops, weeds and jungle spores should be fine. Leave the rest. Use your pickaxe/bombs only for 1 tile wide walls which aren't obvious gates.

That's about it. Craft whatever, but you find way better stuff compared to vanilla crafts. Soul crafting is always awesome. Also be sure to drop down the village well before tackling the earth dungeon.

Stuff that you must not craft or you'll potentially short-circuit the storyline will say "don't craft", "don't craft until you find one in a chest", or similar in the description.

Stuff that you probably shouldn't craft but it won't really break poo poo if you do will generally say something like "you'll find this eventually" or "use this in _____". This includes the Wings and various boss-summoning items.

Base game recipes are fine unless they say "don't craft", but in general you'll find them in chests or as boss drops and all crafting does is let you get them slightly earlier than you would normally. Soulforged recipes are usually amazing.

Personally, I just unlocked Bolt 3 and finished off the Wyvern Mage. Got my rear end kicked by the Twins, so no red hero suit for now. I'm currently debating whether to forge my one suit of adamantine armour into the Genji or Fighter armour, or save that for making Hallowed armour (and save my souls for Bolt 4 or possibly the sniper rifle).

Bolt 3 is already a horrifying cross between and that is basically guaranteed death for any multi-segmented enemy.

It's not so great for single-segment enemies that move around a lot like the Twins, though, which is why I'm pondering the sniper rifle instead.

Bolt 4 doesn't care how many segments the target has. It hits something like 8 times and covers more or less the entire housing tower back in town.

aaaaaa what the gently caress

I killed The Hunter, and then, as I am in the process of finding room in my inventory for all the poo poo it dropped, Kraken, Fiend of Water suddenly gets bored of chilling out in Final Fantasy and attacks me.

The stuff The Hunter dropped had better not have despawned by the time I'm done kicking Kraken's rear end.

E: welp, Kraken killed me and by the time I got back there everything Hunter had dropped, along with all of my souls, were just loving gone. If I kill Hunter again, will it drop the same items again? Does it even drop anything plot-critical? Also, does Kraken show up to skullfuck me every time I kill Hunter?

Dropped items in Terraria don't despawn. You're thinking of Minecraft.

The only way for the items he dropped to disappear is if you exit/reload your game. Souls will vanish, but items remain.

It dropped at least two wings. I did not pick them up. I died, respawned in literally the opposite corner of the world, mirrored back to the dungeon, hiked to the boss room, and everything was gone except the coins.

E: re-summoned Hunter, deployed beatdown. The combination of Bolt4, a Mana Flower, and the Supersonic Wings is so good it should be illegal.

Also, apparently he drops the Hamdrax and the Crest of Earth. Yeah, those are kind of important.

Between the Ankor Wat plate, the Band of Supreme Cosmic Power, and the Wizard's Hat, I don't think I've used a single mana potion since I finished building that set. My mana regenerates almost faster than I can use it.

You sure you don't have the mana flower equipped? Because Bolt 4 costs enough that you pretty much chug a potion every other cast.

The Ankor Wat plate has a built in mana flower effect. I just don't need it; between my bonuses to max mana (seriously, if I get any more it's going to run off the bottom of the screen), mana regen, and spell cost reduction, I can cast Bolt 4 and the mana I spent to cast it regenerates before it's even done the lightning-strike animation.

That's slightly slower than the rate at which I use it if I cast it as fast as possible, but only slightly. And I can cast it 5 times before running out of mana, so I have a bit of a buffer.

The plain magic mirror will teleport you to your spawn point, as will saving and then reloading - same as normal Terraria. This isn't guaranteed to be a place you can easily get back to town from, though.

The greater mirror and village mirror might have default spawnpoints you can teleport to, if you're still carrying them.

If you're not carrying any mirrors, or if none of those go someplace useful, you'll have to hike. ISTR a lever around there that unlocks a climb back to the tunnel you took to get here in the first place; furthermore, most dungeons also have a shortcut to the surface (or, sometimes, to the next dungeon) immediately after the boss room.

Which dungeon is "the second dungeon"? Corruption Temple, and you've just killed the first Eater of Worlds? If you can describe where you are, I can fly down there in my game and have a look around.

(More generally, you pretty much always want to be carrying all three mirrors. This game is big and hiking all the way back to town from the Shadow Temple or the Frozen Ocean is a colossal pain in the rear end. Store all your stuff somewhere convenient (like the wizard's tower) and anchor the village mirror there, and now you can use the normal mirror to return to the last "save point" and the greater mirror to go wherever you please.)

I pretty much quit the game out of frustration last night, so I don't quite recall the name of the temple. It's the one with all the lava that descends into an underground jungle.

My current home point is set at the bed before the boss of the area, and from what I can find there's no easy way out. There are a few active stone blocks that I figure have switches nearby, but I always seem to be on the wrong side of all of them. If I try to go back the way I came in, I get to a jump that's too high for me to reach.

In all honesty, I think I'll just reset. It seems like I'm not too far in the mod, and it's probably better to just get through the Earth Temple now that I know the layout better, and remember to keep the three mirrors on me.

Yeah, I've done that.

For clarity: I've gotten the Cloud in a Bottle, beaten the boss of the area, and am now stuck in that area. If I remember correctly, you don't need to climb the valley itself. There's a switch that extends a bridge (and with the Boots and the CiaB you can probably make it across without the bridge), and on the other side of that is a climb that will take you back to the entrance.

I'm a bit busy now, but I'll see if I can get screenshots when I'm done.
