Man the difficulty scaling on this game is intense. I've spent a few days playing Beginner and it's no longer much of a challenge for me, so I figured I'd jump into a Normal mode game. Yeah, I got completely brutalized. I might as well have been glaring at them for how little my Bullpup did.

Here's a version that can be installed just by extracting into the killingfloor folder, all the maps are already unzipped with their files placed into the appropriate folders (Maps/Music/etc). I compressed it using 7-Zip because that's what the cool kids use these days and to make it small enough to fit on Mediafire. I would have been far too lazy to do this if Insert name here hadn't put all the archives together in one package, so thanks!

Nerdy compression notes: I'm actually really surprised how much better 7-Zip compressed these files compared to ZIP/RAR. The ZIP was 211MB, a RAR was 201MB, and the 7Z was 173MB. Uncompressed size is 504MB. NTFS compression reduced on-disk size to 311MB.

This is pretty cheap, but an easy way to get pistol headshot practice and level your Sharpshooter skill. I wouldn't spend hours grinding, but a couple rounds to push me into Level 3 wasn't too painful:

To all you commandos, what loadout do you roll with? I'm only level 3 but I really like the lack of recoil and scope on the Bullpup. Damage isn't that great but the other guns are practically impossible to go full-auto into the head with.
I'm no pro-commando either (just hit level 3), but I like to do 2-3 shot bursts with the M4 starting in the upper chest, recoil will often carry a round or two into the head. I don't like the AK because of the iron sight, and I don't mind using the SCAR in semi-auto mode, its small mag means even burst-firing drains it too fast.

On another note, how do I directly join a GOTKF server? Is there a way to manually join a server by putting in the IP address? I'm looking forward to not playing with dumbasses.
Right-click on an empty space in the Favorites tab, it will give you an option to "Add server to favorites" and it will pop up a box to type in the IP address. On the Internet tab you can also just right-click to connect to a server directly.

A couple of random questions:

Do pipebombs do full damage if I trigger them with other explosives? In other words, if I see that the patriarch is going to charge right past my pipebombs, can I lob a grenade at them to detonate them when he gets there?

Is there a way to disable those lovely tripwire/unreal/etc intro movies? How about the splash screen? I deleted the "Movies" folder, but that only takes out the loud and annoying ads that play on the spawn screen.

vvv I got banned from a DOOMed map on Normal difficulty. I'll look into goon servers, thanks for the advice.
That'll do it, make sure you only play on Beginner servers until you've leveled your perks a bit, level 2 should be pretty easily obtainable. You might want to consider spending a bit of time solo grinding pistol headshot kills with the Sharpshooter perk, again up to level 2 or so. You don't have to do this if you'd hate it, but the Sharpshooter perk is really helpful for newbies since it's the only perk that benefits your initial rounds before you have enough money for weapons. Players are pretty aggressive about kick/banning anyone they think won't pull their weight, because enemy count (and health I think) are based on number of players, and if you die or aren't killing your share it makes it harder for everyone else. Spend some time figuring out how the game plays, read the wiki about the various perks and enemies, then move on to Normal once Beginner starts feeling pointlessly easy.

Beginner shouldn't even exist in the minds of anyone. The enemies are so fragile, and money is just so abundant that you won't learn a thing playing in that difficulty. Hit the Normal servers until you're level 2, after that jump to the Hard servers.
That's ridiculous, you won't learn a thing playing Normal because you'll be busy running out of time to buy things, getting murdered by Sirens, and getting banned from servers after you wipe your time by pissing off Scrakes and Fleshpounds. The point of Beginner is to let people learn the game mechanics, learn what enemies do, and learn how the weapons/perks work.

Regarding starting on Beginner, I'll just say that I've been gifting my friends KF the last couple days and Normal games have NOT been fun for them until they were a couple hours in and knew the ropes. I mean if you have a good group of people playing you can probably absorb a couple newbies, but especially now if you're playing on pubbie servers there's going to be a lot of barely semi-competent people.

On KF2, the one thing I REALLY want is some sort of lobby system. The L4D2 system would work perfectly for KF, you shouldn't need to browse servers for a 6-player game. A new engine would also be nice, I don't really mind the textures/models much but it seems like effects run in 16-bit color despite everything being set to 32 (I checked in the .ini files), and I would like in-game support for FXAA.

Note that the IJC Weapons Pack breaks perks, you can get stuck on a perk or get stuck perkless, both of which really suck. I think it even persists on other servers you join until you restart the game.

This probably sounds really dumb, but when I'm browsing through servers, what does "Perks enabled" mean? Does it mean that levelling is tracked like normal (as is the case with nearly every server I've ever played on), or does it have something to do with custom mods that use their own levelling system?
Yes, it means experience/leveling works like normal, because all of the content on the server is whitelisted. My understanding is that on servers running "greylisted" content you can use the bonuses for your perks but progress is not saved, and on servers running "blacklisted" content you can't use bonuses to perks from experience.

Don't attempt to host your own server. You should only be playing on perk-enabled dedicated servers, as you want your progress saved. All boxes at the bottom of the server browser must be checked, and be sure to set an appropriate difficulty level. Start on beginner to learn whats going on, you'll quickly realize there's no challenge and need to set the difficulty to Normal at least. The more people you play with the more enemies there are and the more health they have.

There are no crosshairs because you use the iron sights. Some of the guns provide iron sights that are functionally equivalent to crosshairs (the Bullpup, for example). These are the Red Orchestra guys, I don't think any of their games have ever had crosshairs.

Make sure you are firing in bursts with the Bullpup, that's the only way to hit things and do reasonable damage. As you gain a few levels the recoil will really settle down as well. Once you get to the M4 I'd switch to semi-auto mode, though at low levels you will still need 2-3 shot bursts to do decent damage.

Edit: Regarding the M4 vs the AK, I guess the AK is the objectively superior gun, but I hate the ironsights so always just use the M4 until I can afford the SCAR.

Vlad the Impaler (nailgun) is the basically The Gun for BioticsLab. Really, it excels at any situation where you can get zeds to line up in a hallway, especially one with a rear wall. You do have to have the penetration (and thus levels) to make use of it though. This is the same situation where the fire shotgun does well (again with a support specialist), because you can set a lot of zeds on fire if they line up and you have penetration.
