God, I really just cannot stand playing against people who are dozens and dozens and dozens of ranks above me any more. I've tried to push past it, but it is just no fun to play against people who have way more experience, tricked out guns, and mods as to be untouchable. Is there any indication, at all, that the developers are going to address this, or should I just write this off right now?

As people have said dozens of times in this thread. There's nothing to address here. You aren't losing because people have 'tricked out guns and mods as to be untouchable'. The default STAR or JG shotgun are both fantastic guns that do extremely well without mods. The fact that you're losing has more to do with your lack of experience, situational awareness, and teamwork.

I, as a person with almost no loving experience, keep getting faced off against people with a lot of it. Enough that they are virtually untouchable. That is bad. That is essentially inexcusable, seeing as they have a mechanism almost tailor made to track just how long you've been playing the loving game. The mods and guns only exacerbate the problem. You cannot, with a straight face, that all other things being equal the presence of absence of mods and modded weapons are a non-factor. You add that on top of all the previous, and it makes a bad problem worse.

My point was I could give you the exact same weapon and character mods as the people that are stomping you, but it more than likely won't change anything. You just have to accept the fact that you're going to lose a lot before you begin to win. But playing with goons will help speed up the process.

My point is that playing against people who are near to my skill level allows me to learn while enjoying myself. Playing against people who are light years beyond me is not fun, and also drastically neuters the learning process (and turns away potential paying customers, like it's doing me). If I was playing against people who were within +/-20 of my rank it would be a lot smoother process overall than getting stomped by extremely well-traveled 165s.

Actually playing against high ranked people helps a lot because then you can figure out what they did to win. Have a run around the areas you get stomped in to understand why the stomping happened. The overall map is bigger than a team fortress 2 map obviously but the areas you end up fighting in tend to be a bit smaller so it shouldnt take too long to figure where it all went wrong and then you can either predict it and counter it or make use of it next time. What's your in game name? The goon groups I've played in dont always win (in fairness some of them are going out of their way to lose) but they tend to do fairly well even when they don't.

Except, if they factored rank into matchmaking, all of the cheater rerolls would be facing new players even more, driving them off. Plus, it's not like you couldn't just make a new alt as an experienced player and still stomp all over people. In theory, the threat system should actually end up accounting for skill and experience differences. If you're far more skilled than the average player, but don't have experience, you're going to be fighting the more experienced players as they'll have a similar threat to you. If you lose to them regularly, your threat will go down, and it will pit you against people better suited to fight against. You're not supposed to be able to win 90% of your missions, no matter how good you are. Proper matchmaking means you should expect to lose 50% of your matches.

I don't get all the complaints about golds in bronze districts ect. I've recently become silver, and when I was bronze I was still able to kick some gold rear end. Sure, there were times when I've gotten my rear end handed to me, but I've seen it from all ranks. To be honest, I don't think threat serves to mark player skill very well. Rank? Pfft. So what, you have a rocket launcher. Does you no good if I don't give you the chance to use it. I've seen some really good bronzes, and really terrible golds. In the end you just need to learn to play and quit looking at the ranks/threat. They're a poor system of measurement. My friend plays with me and he's somehow gold ranked even though 75% of the time he ends up 0-1-10 in missions. Learn not to stick your head out of cover too often/too long, learn where to move, learn your environment and how to use it. Learn your gun. I cannot stress the learning your gun part the most. The weapons aren't why you lose, it's because you run in with a STAR or an OBEYA and try to close range the guy with the EW 626.

It's like they went "Man, that valentine's tag was cool, but how can we sell it all year round?" I love the idea, personally. It seems like a simple gun mod to make a wide variety of graphics for, it makes marking targets with a HVR very simple and it seems like it'd be worth it just to fill a weapon slot. These are the kinds of mods I'd like to see, utility ones that are useful but won't involve a poo poo-ton of rebalancing. There are a few of these sitting around unused in the APB database, including carsurfing, different field supply crates such as fast cooldown, fast deploy, and a character mod that lets you take more falling damage but completely removes the recovery animation when you hit the ground. There's also a 15% movement speed increase mod which also decreases your health by 15% or so, it'd seem nice for a glass cannon style character or a sniper who likes to be on the move at all times. Would probably just lead to spastic hackers bouncing off the walls though. There's a version that gives you it as a temporary boost instead, like nitro but for on-foot.

Cabbit posted:Okay, I think the trick to enjoying losing is to watch Novasol piss people off with the grenade launcher. That was a loving hilarious way to kill three hours this morning. That's the spirit. Try not to take the game too seriously (I'm not qualified to give this advice), because the amount of silly stuff that happens per mission makes it infuriating if you try to take it all at face value. By all means you can have fun being super tactical and stomping people via teamwork alone, but it's only a matter of time before you're paired up against people who are massively more skilled then you or just outright hacking. When that happens, it's time to break out the OSMAW and OPGL and harvest some sweet sweet tears from people who will scream bullshit at you despite blocking your objectives, ghosting, macroing their weapons or taking advantage of whatever cheap trick they feel will help them win. In this game, being called a noob is a complement; it shows you're pissing someone really stupid off.

I've actually had a chance to toy around with most of these on the OTW, they all felt pretty well balanced and I look forward to new contacts bringing some of them to live. Air Control is going to lead to a few more interesting camp spots that you normally couldn't reach, and Car Surfer is just hilariously fun. They made it so if you're the VIP, Car Surfer doesn't work, you just slide off cars as normal, which seems way better than trying to slow down cars that you're standing on, or worse, just letting the VIP run off at max speed. Some of the mods end up being pretty awful though. The extra fall damage for no landing animation just cripples you IMO, any height where you'd have a landing animation, you take a ton of damage from. Fragile and the Epinephrine Injector seem pretty limited in use too, though combining them gives you some very cracked out speed.
