I guess we also dislike the Jazz a fair bit, and had a real rivalry with the Sonics (RIP Sonics) but it will always be the Lakers at the top.

The lakers are the only real rivalry for Portland. I'm not sure if its reciprocated at all, but I like to imagine it is.

Mini rivalries pop up but they don't last very long since players don't stay on one team for very long. The Cavs and Wizards were almost brawling in every game but now both teams are awful and nobody gives a poo poo. Every modern rivalry is done within two years

From 2004 to 2008, any time the Suns played the Spurs or Mavs was a massive, massive event. Fantastic play between these teams in the regular season and playoffs.

And then shaq happened... I still have nightmares of Duncan draining a 3 in the first round of the 2008 playoffs, in the first loving game, effectively skullfucking the Suns for the series.

You would think that of all people Drew Gooden would avoid getting in feuds because the odds are he will be teammates with his antagonist within six to eight weeks. I want the NBA to make Drew Gooden: Coming to an arena near you! banners every trade deadline. He's still about 20 teams away from having all 30 NBA jerseys.

My favorite part of that was LeBron comparing him and Deshawn to Jay-Z and Soulja Boy, only to have the Wizards invite Soulja Boy to the next game.

Donald Sterling asked Paul Silas, when he was the head coach of the Clippers, if he would be willing to wrap players ankles so Sterling wouldn't have to pay a trainer. This is a real thing that happened.

What exactly is a trade exemption?

morestuff
Aug 2, 2008

Clippers owner Donald Sterling testified Tuesday about his past deep loyalty and trust for former executive Elgin Baylor despite an admission by the owner that he wasn't completely clear about the NBA legend he appointed vice president of player personnel in 1986.

"You didn't know about his basketball career?" Baylor attorney Carl Douglas asked Sterling in his first day on the stand as Baylor's wrongful termination civil lawsuit against the team continued at a Los Angeles courthouse. "His accomplishments? The Hall of Fame?"

"No," Sterling answered. "... I didn't know that. I hired him for $3,000 a month. I didn't really know what his role was.... He was working in a mail-order company back then."

Baylor, the NBA's first overall pick in 1958 and a member of the league's 50th anniversary all-time team, was an 11-time All-Star who once scored 71 points in a game and brought the Lakers to the cusp of a title they would ultimately win the season he retired.

If a team takes back less salary than they contribute to a trade, they can get an exception to use in a future trade allowing them to go over. Like everything in the CBA its more complicated than that and there are a ton of restrictions and most of the time they never get used but that's the gist.

Here is a link with specifics (its from the last CBA but I don't think its changed in any meaningful way):

It's just a technicality for teams over the cap (or who would end up over the cap after the trade) to make trades. All part of the "soft cap" system (since you can't do anything over the cap without an "exception").

Oh yeah we forgot about him refusing to cover the costs of surgery to save the life of a Clippers assistant coach who was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

quote:

According to former Clippers assistant coach Kim Hughes, Sterling and the Clippers organization refused to cover the costs of a surgery Hughes' needed after being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2004.

"The reason they couldn't pay for the surgery is if they paid for mine, if anybody else had a problem -- head coach, secretary, assistant coach -- if they paid for mine, the onus would be on them for everybody else," Hughes told ESPN.

"I said, 'That's fine. I choose to try and save my life, and if I have to pay for it myself, I will.'"

But Hughes didn't have to pay for the surgery out of his own pocket. It turns out that although Sterling is a complete scumbag, the players he employs aren't. Several Clippers players at the time - including Corey Maggette, Chris Kaman, Elton Brand and Marko Jaric - offered to help pay for Hughes' medical procedures, which totaled $70,000 or more.

Hughes could have chose to delay having the surgery but chose to have it as soon as possible so that he wouldn't have to miss a chunk of the regular season recovering from the procedure. His dedication to the team may have ended up saving his life, as the cancer was found to be more aggressive and fast-spreading that originally thought and was threatening other parts of his body. But Hughes had the entire prostate removed and was back on the sidelines before the start of the season.

Actually here is an old article from ESPN that talks about a ton of the terrible things that Sterling has done. The quotes about him as a slumlord don't even begin to show how lovely he was. Read about how he treated a tenant that was partially paralyzed and legally blind.

Lots of penetration but not sure if you are going to enjoy it. Maggette is a pretty unique player on the court. Something like 30% of his points are from the free throw line despite opponents knowing his first, second and third thoughst are to drive to the rim.
