Yeah, no kidding. I was talking to him for a while while volunteering, and evidently, he has the kind of job where he can work insane hours in the fall & winter and then pretty much take off all the time he wants in the spring and summer. So, he can go to Colorado a full month before the Hardrock 100 to hang around, run, and acclimate to the altitude. Must be nice.

Flexibility-wise, I'm doing the third world squat, foam rolling, and basic static stretches at night. My flexibility is slowly improving, and it keeps the pain out of my legs, so whatevs~

In other news, I think I'm going to stop lifting for a while. I honestly don't care about my lifting numbers the way I used to (i.e. at all), and I have a lot of muscle (especially in my upper body) that I can afford to shed, especially if I ever want to be a remotely fast runner. I also don't want lifting to interfere with my running training right now. I do plan on picking it back up later, mostly for aesthetics and to avoid being a hopelessly weak poo poo. I think something like 150-160 might be a good goal weight for me in the long term, so commence twinkification, I guess.

Also, I'm about to enter another 50-miler I found on October 13. This is on a decently flat course in a beautiful park, and since it's in the fall, it'll be relatively cool (especially compared to my 50 in July, oh god). Plus, the finisher's medal

and technical shirt

are really loving cool.

That looks ridiculously rad. I may have to do something stupid.

And I really want a Bad Water belt buckle. It just screams "ultimate badass/ loving idiot"

Check out the start of the waiver for this overnight ultra. The race director promises that runners really have seen all the things listed in it, except the polecats, and "they are there too."

I realize June in North Carolina is hot and humid. Most people and doctors advise against running in heat and humidity. Also,

A calf cramp ripped me from my slumber at 4:50 am today. Didn't hurt my morning run though, because:

quote:

Tracked a workout for 1506 pts

Running:
1:37:43 || 10 mi || 9:45 min/mi || 160 bpm || light hills (+1506 pts)
This was:
1. The first morning run where I didn't need to take any walk breaks
2. The first time I broke the 10 min/mile mark for a 10-miler
3. And I managed it by 15 sec/mile overall, and with negative splits (9:48 for first half, 9:42 for second half)

I guess I'm not sick anymore! I returned home after my run to a dextrose + APW Cinnamon Bun shake, and now I'm off to work. A good morning.

Weekend long run!

quote:

Tracked a workout for 3655 pts

Running:
4:06:42 || 22 mi || 11:13 min/mi || 153 bpm || moderate hills (+3655 pts)
I started off on the trails and did 16.7 miles there with very little walking (just the big uphills). I got bored to death of going in 2.3-mile circles though, and decided to do the 10-minute drive home and finish my run on roads. It was a good decision. One problem is that the trails I've been using have a lot more climb than the ultra I'll be doing in July (which will be ~1.4% grade uphill during half of it, and that same grade downhill for the other half), so they're making it tough to cover the distances I need to cover for my long runs. I think doing flatter long runs and having a dedicated Big Hill Day midweek will be wiser.

That's nice, though I don't think there's much harm in doing long runs on something that's more hilly. Your plan of midweek hills and flat long runs works just as well if not better, of course. I wish we had more flat trail ultras like that, then I wouldn't have to resort to track ultras for a fast time.

My heart rates vary on morning workouts. For some reason though, they're usually low the morning after a long run.

Regarding the 3100-mile race: honestly, the mental element of it impresses me a lot more than the (still highly impressive) physical element. Marshall Ulrich ran almost that exact distance & time when he crossed the continental USA (3,063 miles/4940 km in 52 days/52 days), but he at least had a change of scenery once in a while. The "self-transcendence" people are basically running around a flat hamster wheel. Their concentration abilities are incredible.

To do that in a way that's quantitatively meaningful, I'd have to factor in my pace, the temperature outside, humidity, how hilly the course is, how much I ran the previous day...can't say I'm enough of a math nerd to come up with a formula for that.

So basically, I just look at it and say "oh, that's a few bpm lower than usual." It's not terribly scientific.

quote:

Tracked a workout for 1,598 pts

Running:
1:33:43 || 10 mi || 9:20 min/mi || 159 bpm || light hills (+1598 pts)
I felt great this morning and just kept on going and going. My plans for getting a negative split were put in jeopardy when I was held up at an intersection for over 40 seconds during the second half of the run - ugh. With 2 miles to go, I was plodding along, thinking "I'd have gotten negative splits if not for that intersection." Then I quit feeling sorry for myself, realized that "I'm going to get negative splits DESPITE being held up at the intersection" is much cooler than resigning myself to failure, and pushed hard all the way to the end. I ended up running the second half about 22 seconds faster than the first. This was a 25 sec/mile PR for this distance, by the way. Aand it looks like I should be able to do a 9:30-9:40 pace half-marathon without much trouble now, so I think I'm well on my way to a sub-10:00 pace marathon (that's ~4 hours, 22 minutes) in November. (Super-secret new goal: sub-4 hour marathon)

Early morning workouts own. You can roll into work or school or whatever having already accomplished more than many people will in their entire day.

Honestly, convenience is why I want to do it. Though lots of people (including people I trust, like Lyle McD) seem to think that fasted/bonk runs can train the body to better use fat as fuel in place of carbs, which is important for ultrarunning, so that's another reason why I'm interested in it.

Did this long run continuously (i.e. no walk breaks whatsoever), and it's by far the farthest I've gone without having to walk. I easily could have kept going, too, but I needed to get home for a sweet potato pancake & bacon breakfast. My running plan only called for 14 miles today, but I did 16.2 instead because this puts me at 100 km (62.2 miles) for the week - an all-time high for me! As I hit my goal distance, I shouted "WHOO!", fistpumped, and charged down a big hill to my car. I got some weird looks from people in the process, but I don't care because, as the wise Smile said:

I'm trying something a bit crazy. I have a 10-mile race on Saturday, and I want plenty of rest for it, so I'm going to load all of my midweek mileage into one day (tomorrow). This way, I will have two entire days of rest before the race. Tomorrow is going to be cool, so that has been chosen as my "oh god too much running" day. My training program called for 7 miles today and Thursday and 5 tomorrow, so that's 19 miles - a 10-miler tomorrow morning and then a 9-miler in the evening sounds about right. I've never done a double with so much mileage before, either, so I'm curious to see how I respond to this.

In the meantime, I found a picture that someone took of me volunteering at the Umstead 100. I'm at the first aid station, where my job was to refill runners' bottles as they were getting food between laps around the course. I have a rather curious expression on my face...

"BRING ME YOUR GODDAMN BOTTLES. SO I CAN FILL THEM WITH WATER. NOW."
