I was talking to him for a while while volunteering, and evidently, he has the kind of job where he can work insane hours in the fall & winter and then pretty much take off all the time he wants in the spring and summer. So, he can go to Colorado a full month before the Hardrock 100 to hang around, run, and acclimate to the altitude. Must be nice. That looks ridiculously rad. I may have to do something stupid. And I really want a Bad Water belt buckle. It just screams "ultimate badass/ loving idiot"

Zugzwang posted:In other news, I think I'm going to stop lifting for a while. I honestly don't care about my lifting numbers the way I used to (i.e. at all), and I have a lot of muscle (especially in my upper body) that I can afford to shed, especially if I ever want to be a remotely fast runner. I also don't want lifting to interfere with my running training right now. I do plan on picking it back up later, mostly for aesthetics and to avoid being a hopelessly weak poo poo. I think something like 150-160 might be a good goal weight for me in the long term, so commence twinkification, I guess. Good for you for going after your goals. Good luck in achieving your goal weight and physique!

Thanks. My main concern at this point is that I may drop a shirt size by the time the Gibbet 50 rolls around. I want to be able to fit into that awesome shirt when I get it.

A calf cramp ripped me from my slumber at 4:50 am today. Didn't hurt my morning run though, because:quote:Tracked a workout for 1506 pts 1. The first morning run where I didn't need to take any walk breaks 2. The first time I broke the 10 min/mile mark for a 10-miler 3. And I managed it by 15 sec/mile overall, and with negative splits (9:48 for first half, 9:42 for second half) I guess I'm not sick anymore! I returned home after my run to a dextrose + APW Cinnamon Bun shake, and now I'm off to work. A good morning.

That's nice, though I don't think there's much harm in doing long runs on something that's more hilly. Your plan of midweek hills and flat long runs works just as well if not better, of course. I wish we had more flat trail ultras like that, then I wouldn't have to resort to track ultras for a fast time.

Your heart is swole but everything else is weak, clearly. Low heart rates are normal for morning workouts, from my experience. I've heard about that race. I think I would last about 2-3 days until my body broke down.

Regarding the 3100-mile race: honestly, the mental element of it impresses me a lot more than the (still highly impressive) physical element. Marshall Ulrich ran almost that exact distance & time when he crossed the continental USA (3,063 miles/4940 km in 52 days/52 days), but he at least had a change of scenery once in a while. The "self-transcendence" people are basically running around a flat hamster wheel. Their concentration abilities are incredible.

Can you average out your morning heart monitor readings or are they way too varied to make that a remote possibility?

I'm trying something a bit crazy. I have a 10-mile race on Saturday, and I want plenty of rest for it, so I'm going to load all of my midweek mileage into one day (tomorrow). This way, I will have two entire days of rest before the race. Tomorrow is going to be cool, so that has been chosen as my "oh god too much running" day. My training program called for 7 miles today and Thursday and 5 tomorrow, so that's 19 miles - a 10-miler tomorrow morning and then a 9-miler in the evening sounds about right. I've never done a double with so much mileage before, either, so I'm curious to see how I respond to this. In the meantime, I found a picture that someone took of me volunteering at the Umstead 100. I'm at the first aid station, where my job was to refill runners' bottles as they were getting food between laps around the course. I have a rather curious expression on my face... ![]() "BRING ME YOUR GODDAMN BOTTLES. SO I CAN FILL THEM WITH WATER. NOW."
