Use Prodex to get an idea how to play a given hero. If you are totally lost on who to play, pick Plague Rider. He is good on any team / easy to play / strong at all skill levels

That Balphagore pick turned out pretty well for Blackfade. 500 GPM and a shitload of pushing. Trendy Silhouette picks didn't work out so great for sGty. Logged in for a game last night after not playing since January. Basically the most fun game I've ever had. I took Nymph and told my team I haven't played in months. They gave me some good-natured poo poo about it and then we proceeded to hand the other team its rear end. I laned with Panda and we ruined Valkyrie and Empath. Snagged a bloodlust around level 3 and it just kept going. I ended up 10/1/22. Is the community becoming less terrible (playing and attitude wise) or was this just a lucky game? Also a good Panda player is a pretty sick thing to behold.

For reference, a game I was in last night with a friend, a pub raged hard at me, as Myrmidon, for not farming and not warding, right after he got done yelling at my friend playing I think Flint, for farming and losing mid. I had 23 wards placed that game and the wards were always sold out and placed. My friend was the highest level in the game and at least a level or two on the other mid, and with a better score. When he yelled that at me we had at least 2 wards on the map. Pubs will rage the gently caress out about anything.

The strongest early-mid game strat is just to pub train (i.e. 4-5 man) and gank constantly - its not THE most ideal in terms of farming / etc, but its frustrating for the other team and it boosts your team morale ALOT. Also, discussing / showing picks for AP / BP / BD go a long way as well!

I'm pretty sure the numbers have already been ran a couple times in this thread, but you're much better off buying a couple more totems, or some regen items. Cost of Minor Totem(+1 str +1 agi +1 int)=53g Cost of Soulscream ring(+3str +6agi +3int)=460g You can get 6 Minor Totems for 318g. And they give you +6 to all stats. You can get 3 Minor Totems for 165g, Duck boots for 150g, and have exactly the same stats as a Ring, for 150 less gold(315 vs 460). You can then buy 2 Runes and some mana pots and beat the crap out of the sucker that went Ring+healthpot. e. whenever you don't know what starter items to get do: 4 Minor Totems+Runes+mana pots. It's at worst 80% as good as the optimum lane starter build(like one-two heroes might want to go bottle first in mid, a few heroes might want to hatchet and/or buckler). Amulet of Exile is slightly different if you're rushing a mana ring (i.e. jungle Keeper or Tempest, but I wouldn't recommend it for laning, even if you're midas or another hero that would generally go mana ring - better to buy the +2 all, the +3 stats, and then a few branches + regen.

It also means you have to spend the first few minutes farming for POSSIBLE consumables you might need, which is a double edged sword. If you have a flying courier or are near the secret shops, this isn't as big of a deal, but it still sucks time and xp away from you.

Rule of thumb for best 3 starting builds. You can usually almost always get away with these until you've got more of a feel for what you personally enjoy starting with. Ranged heroes - Ring of protection (finish this in lane with a scarab for a +6 damage boost that helps a lot with laning), +3 stat item or mana potions or health potion, tangoes, 3 minor totems Melee heroes - Shield, tangoes, either health pot and 3 minor totems or a hatchet. Either or, but they have some big mana cost nuke that presumes rushing chalice (Behemoth, Magmus, etc) - +3 str, +3 int, tangoes, health pot or 2 mana pots, 2 minor totems.

I always preferred armor ring + hatchet + 2 totems + biscuits as a melee hero like Kraken, Armadon, or Rampage. They're a nightmare to lasthit against with a hatchet and they're naturally beefy enough (especially with the armor ring) to survive harass without a buckler. They're ALSO good carriers of Ring of the Teacher! The only drawback of this build is the comparatively little regen you get. Also buckler is really good for mitigation compared to armor ring.

I never get two sets of regen at start. The health pot probably won't get me last-hits and kills, but the 2 extra stats certainly do. Couple str hero options: Tangoes/buckler/+3 str/2x totem if you are playing it safe 4x +3 str for level 1 aggressive play

This is getting in very detailed stuff that random noobs buying soulscream rings probably don't care about. But. Buckler/Hatch/Health pot is standard on BH mid. If you are getting pressured mid you only need to make it to level 3 and the 2nd level of feast. The health pot lets you get there fast. Runes in that situation are a waste since a) they take ages to restore your health and b) you are far away from trees. Generally just buying the default starters is also fine. Don't get 4x +3 str wtf...
