STARE

So if I haven't played Devil May Cry before, would the HD Collection be a good version to get, or should I track down the PS2 versions? Also, has anyone played the 360 version of the HD Collection, and if so how are the controls?

Pesky Splinter posted:

And yet the MGS HD collection is being called the standard by which other HD ports should be compared because of how good it is, or how well it is ported and cleaned up, rather.

Do people really say this? They cut a bunch of content from MGS3, and there's plenty of emulation oddities found throughout both MGS2 and 3. (The most notable to me being that MGS3's opening is out of sync with the video)

Gametrailers has their video review up:
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/r...evil-may/728749

8.7 overall, good score

Their pros: Trophy support, smooth controls, looks good in HD, DMC3 Special Edition included.
Their cons: Menus are unaltered, Devil May Cry is a little dated, DMC2 still sucks.

Seems like a good package overall, but I still think they are charging too much for it.

The MGS collection is above average, but is far from a definitive release.

Especially considering how in Europe, the re-releases contained even more content than the other regions. MGS2: Substance came with The Document of MGS2, which had to be bought separately elsewhere, while MGS3: Subsistence had the third disc, which was a 3.5 hour movie based on the game's cutscenes, included as standard.

To be fair, most of the missing content is left out for good reasons. MGS2's skateboarding and MGS3's nightmare used entirely different engines, which would require almost as much work as MGS2 and 3 took to get up and running. Snake vs. Monkey uses a Sony-owned brand, which couldn't be used on the Xbox 360 release.

In addition, both MGS2 and 3 share a single disc on the 360, which limits how much extraneous content they could have used.

For the DMC collection, while there is no missing content, the lack of effort clearly shows. At minimum, I'd have liked the option to use DMC's original controls, and be able to reverse the X-axis on DMC3's camera. These could be patched in, but I can't see Capcom making the effort.

New trailer for DmC:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBd8...player_embedded.

Contains rear end shots.

Combat seems to be more fluid than seen previously, bit hard to tell though, due to the editing. New Dante's attitude seems to resemble DMC3 Dante's more.

The antagonists seem to be acting as some sort of theocratic police state thing, judging by the comments of the newscaster. Also Dante is now a terrorist and a sexual deviant. Apparently. And has glowing tattoos.

The Gamespot coverage will be released soon.

The combat footage is really hard to judge. I notice they kept using the same air combo over and over, when it really feels like they should have varied it more to show that variation exists.

It at least is looking more appropriately cheesy now tho'.

Having played Bayonetta, an rear end shot of Dante is almost tame by comparison.

In a few minutes the Gamespot coverage of the demo will begin, so hopefully, we'll get a better look at the gameplay.

Thank gently caress the combo rating is on screen again.

The combat still looks a bit clunky. If I didn't know any better I'd say it was a DMC clone than an actual DMC game.
Nice to see that they'll keep the tradition of the names of the weapons having absolutley nothing to do with the look of said weapon though. About the only thing I'm really really negative on is the bullet lines. They just look kinda crappy.

I'll probably still end up playing it, if only because I'm an unrepentant whore for action games.

Not totally sold on it, but the trailer/gameplay footage has alleviated some of the doubts I had. Story doesn't seem quite as lighthearted and cheesy as previous DMC games and the gameplay looks still less fluid than one would like, but it is certainly an improvement on what we'd seen before and I'll probably pick this up when it lowers in price.

Well, at least Dante doesn't seem to be a Linkin Park song made flesh any longer! The combo meter is firmly in place a s a mechanic, and it was mentioned that there would be more weapons in each of the three apparent classes. Action looks a little clunky and slow, but might there might be a little time to iron that out? Maybe some of the other weapons are faster and more accommodating to people who like the other DMC games, eh? Not exactly what I hoped for, but I'm definitely playing it now.

I'd imagine that firstly, it has to do with ratings, secondly, that most games don't handle that sort of thing very maturely, and finally, there are idiots out there who think that anything even they deem remotely sexual in nature (and these are often the same ones who can't tell the difference between what is sexualised and what isn't) is going to bring about the end of the world because WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN!

[e]: I didn't mind the coverups, considering what they were. It actually got a small chuckle out of me.

[e2]: It could mean anything to be honest. It's such a broad term. They're just using it to vilify Dante. Just like the real Fox news would

More News!

UK Gamespot Interview with Tameem

Tameem discusses why Dante is in the buff, social satire (in a DMC game, really?), info on the girl accompanying Dante (she's called Kat and is psychic and can see into the limbo, basically), and the info covering the weapons.

He also briefly delves into the combo rating system and that they've incorperated something that shows how you got those comboes (like they did in Bayonetta).

It seems like there's tonnes of news today.

[e]: For everytime I'm getting to like the game's imagery, I hate him explaining what that imagery means. Let it speak for itself goddammit!
[e2]: I think it's because it gives an actual personality to him rather than just him frowning or scowling.

I am quite looking forward to this game, especially since that last trailer, which made Dante look much more interesting than his appearance in the original trailer.

As long as you aren't expecting Devil May Cry 5, which is filled in beautifully by Bayonetta, it looks like it will be a solid action game. As long as they understand what made DMC great in the first place, then at least using its good ideas will ensure that it will be competently handled. Although the same could be said for DMC2...

The recent trailers and gameplay have gotten me less cynical about the game than I have been, but I'm on the same boat you are: it just looks okay. The combat so far reminds me a lot Darksiders and Kingdoms of Amalur where you have two different beatsticks assigned to two different buttons to mash out two different types of attacks. Not inherently bad, but not all that remarkable either. I hope there's a bit more to it. Can't say much about the scoring system so far other than it's nice that they included it.

Right now, the game is sitting at a pretty solid "meh" for me. It seems like a typical, competent action game but doesn't look like it's going to offer much to scratch that certain itch the same way DMC1 and 3 are doing in the HD Collection. Which is a bit of a shame, because I could go for another one of those that I don't already know backwards and forwards. Oh well, maybe the social commentary and flashy levels could possibly tip the balance in its favor? Who knows...

Maybe I should stop expecting the worst since it inflates my perception of stuff I expect to suck, but these new trailers actually impressed me.

I'm glad they're putting more goofy stuff into the game since DMC always had a cheesy vibe to it, but the hamhanded way they're handling the "big brother" theme really turns me off. I'm just hoping it doesn't cut into the gameplay too much, since how they're promoting their story comes off as overly pretentious. It's a shame: I try to appreciate video game stories since the good ones more or less keep getting buried because the market don't promote or appreciate them, but there's a time and a place for emphasizing storytelling and a DMC reboot doesn't seem like the game for it.

When I saw the combat, it reminded me a lot of Darksiders with the alternate weapons being assigned to their own buttons as opposed to actively switching to them. I like the emphasis they're putting into aerial combat since I've always identified good air melee with the DMC series ever since I played the first game. The animations look great, even if the speed and flow isn't quite there yet. I'm hoping for more details on the guns since I know DMC has always considered ranged weapons as combo extenders instead of actual standbys.

All in all, it looks good and doesn't seem to be the complete trainwreck I thought it would be. Here's to hope.

Agreed. The fact that he's cliche as hell isn't as important as the fact that they have some epic fights and scenes, using perhaps one of mankind's oldest form of story - two warring brothers fighting over a difference.

Yeah, Vergil being a terrible character is probably true in a story sense... but this is a video game and I agree with everyone and anyone who's said that he provided some awesome battles and that's what really matters in this case. If we're gonna slam Vergil for being crap in that sense, you might as well have piledriven Dante with the same thing in DMC1... which, well, he'd probably just get up from and do a combo or something.
