http://anotherone0.tripod.com/SA_FAQ.htm The SA Forums FAQ, as posted by anotherone. I don't even know how I ran across this, who this guy is, or if what he's saying is true, but it is a pretty interesting read, and shows how much the forums have changed. It's basically a brief explanation of SA and its culture geared towards newcomers and/or non-members. I only started coming around in '07, so I don't remember a lot of this stuff. Oh, there's a glossary, too. So, how much do YOU recall? it would be interesting to hear others' recollections of this stuff. A few choice quotes: quote:postcount++: It used to be that postcounts were displayed under a user's name. Unfortunately, many people reguarded postcounts like they would penis size, and goons became obsessed with having a large postcount. "Postcount++" (or "add one to postcount" for you non-programmer goons) was tacked on to pointless posts and was often posted by itself when the poster didn't really have anything to contribute to the current thread but wanted to up the size of his/her postcount. (HPopper) Haha that's kind of dumb quote:DPPH: Don't Post Porn Here. Unfortunately, everyone did, and it got shut down when a lawyer threatened to sue. See the British Bulldog saga for an interesting anecdote. There may or may not be a secret backup DPPH, get in touch with Stuntcock for the details. Oh, aye? quote:K THX BYE: Another Once-very-popular SA catchphrase. It mocks the convention of using the sloppy e-mail/IM shorthand (e.g. "can u plz come back l8r ppl!"). (HPopper) I think that it was actually first seen on All About Sex. How much of this stuff could get you banned now? quote:Gimmick Poster: A user who posts on one theme and one theme only. Example: Period Guy, who posted only a "." Some gimmick posters are embraced and become regulars, such as GameQuoter; while most are banned and flamed incessantly. It's not worth it, trust me. Often, established posters create extra gimmick accounts and use them when needed. Gimmick posters are now grounds for banning, both of your gimmick account and your normal account, unless they're hilariously funny. quote:Title Pairs: Two threads that appear next to each other on the forum page which appear to be related. For instance: "I found hell..." "In the library!". ......... quote:Why doesn't Lowtax run ad banners? Hwaet? Anyway, there's a ton more stuff in there, look it over and share some memories!

Oh that's interesting, imagine D&D overrun with dinosaur pics.quote:Dinosaur Game: A device used to diffuse trolls. The idea of the game is simple. Find a picture of a dinosaur somewhere on the internet and post it in the offending troller's thread. If you are not the first person to post a dinosaur pic, try to follow the previous poster's pic by matching either the color or the species. (much like the card game Uno) (HPopper)

But did you get head? The most amazing thing I can really remember (I don't remember much, I was a 17 year old shitstain and would rather not think about the awful posting I must have done) was that there were so few "regulars". Now there's so many members it's hard to keep count but back then it would just be Jeddite, Euronymous, BBAB (British Born and Bread), TOAC TEH WONDER DOUGH, Lowtax's Bastard Son, Artfag, Cait Sith, and some others I'm not remembering, but the list was really short. It's nuts now to think that I can't tell one username from another if their avatar isn't unique because there's so many people here now.

This place used to be fairly conservative, too, believe it or not. I mean, it was no freep, but compared to today, it was quite different.

I wrote a sociolinguistics paper about All Your Base when I was in college, before I even signed up for an account. IIRC I didn't use the word "meme" once in that paper. When I did actually sign up for an account I remember it was one of the first time I decided to use a unique password because I remember thinking "these people seem shady as gently caress" and I was nervous about using my credit card info! jet sanchEz posted:I remember sig armies too but I don't remember what they were all about. It seems like "parody threads," "thread pairs" and the like would fall under the "I'm da guy in da OP" category and be bannable now. Aren't gimmicks/parachutes bannable?

There are 9/11 threads on a lot of forums and they are all pretty fascinating because you can see people reacting to events as they happen. It's a really interesting aspect of the era we live in, now more than ever since we have twitter, facebook, etc. in addition to forums. It's going to change the way we look at history in a sense - there's nothing like that really for most events prior to the 90's.

So, those of you who were around back then, how has SA changed? Is it the same? Better? Worse? If you feel that the overall quality has changed(for better or for worse), what do you think is responsible for making it different? If you could get rid of something that is around now that wasn't around then, what would it be? Conversely, if you could bring back something that is gone, what would it be?

I remember the standard reply when anyone would post a thread about relationship problems was either, "Punch her in the crouch", "Sever", or "Kill her, then yourself". Quote used to also say "[user] came out of the closet to say..." and "[user] had this to say about Robocop..." D&D used to be festering with libertarians too, but that really was only a few years ago.

I totally joined for DPPH, not gonna lie. Just like Hamburglar, I remember the forums having a lot more posting superstars, but I think that may have gone hand-in-hand with the looser moderation that SA had back then. A lot more gimmicks and low-effort posts were tolerated, which made the people who had a talent for Internet Comedy stand out all the more. I still remember Awful Fantasy getting posted, playing through it, and actually getting a lot of the references. I seriously doubt anyone could pull that off now.

If you feel that the overall quality has changed(for better or for worse), what do you think is responsible for making it different? It's better now, pretty much all around, in my opinion. Back then almost all threads were E/N. Literally a thread about something inane that happened to someone at work. Don't get me wrong, I was on board, and this forum was still 1,000x better than the poo poo chat rooms on AOL and whatever else was around. People still posted with proper grammar and used their shift key. Pretty much everyone knew what everyone looked like, too. People would have their real picture as their sig or avatar or whatever.

If you feel that the overall quality has changed(for better or for worse), what do you think is responsible for making it different? I think front page content is still good, though I don't read it as often as I used to. The forums culture has changed and become somewhat more mainstream, but this was really part of the same process happening to internet culture in general, its not really an SA specific thing. It has become a bit more insular, and is no longer one of the leading generators of content like it used to be, its become eclipsed to an extent by sites like 4chan and especially reddit. Part of that is because traditional messageboards are themselves becoming a bit outdated, and also because SA asks for more effort from OP's. Overall I think what is responsible for making SA different is really the interent itself changing rather drastically over the last decade. I don't think its really a "better or worse" issue.

It does make the discussion a bit better, but this place doesn't seem to generate anywhere near the amount of viral content as it used to, or as much as other places elsewhere on the Internet do. Edit: It's amazing seeing the things that DID filter out, though. I'm pretty sure the whole Let's Play thing started here, and that's HUGE these days. It's sorta changed how people think about gaming, but not too long ago it was seen as such a nuisance in Games that it was sent off to its own subforum.

It's kind of a trade off. We generally expect OP's to actually write something out, you aren't supposed to start a thread here that is just a single image or youtube video that you think is funny, with nothing else. On reddit, that's what the most popular content is. It's a lot easier for that type of content to go viral but as a consequence you have to wade through a lot of people posting dumb poo poo, or reposting the same exact video that was funny two years ago 100's of times.

johnny sack posted:I had forgotten all about gamequoter. I haven't seen him in a long, long time. Looking at someone's profile actually shows the last time someone has posted. There's a few other things I remember. When DPPH went away, for a very short time there was "Porn Friday" where you were allowed to post porn in GBS. This wasn't that far back, but there was a trick where you could use the image tag, but instead of an image you could use the URL that blocks a user. So if someone didn't like someone else, all they'd have to do is post this code, and anyone whose browser loaded that post now had that person on ignore. Random ignored people all over the drat forums.
