I really hate the assholes who just F5 constantly and Google everything they see in the hope that they'll be able to prove someone wrong about something and call them an idiot. Seems really prevalent in megathreads now. Actually, megathreads in general suck. GBS is basically just 40 separate forums about things that nobody cares or can even follow about unless they've been reading some stupid thread constantly for the past 4 months.

The one thing I wish I could find on the forums from days of yore is the full version of Toasterhead's FYAD FYAD LOL "THIS SUMMER" flash video/mp3. That was one of the funniest things I had ever heard, and it breaks my heart I can't find a good version of it anywhere.

One of the best songs I ever heard on this site was an old, old Colorfinger cover of Phil Collins' "Take a Look at Me Now." I lost it in a format like 4-5 years ago and have never been able to find it again.

I do not understand people who say the forums have lost their edgy, dark sense of humor. You guys must not get out much and see what mainstream humor is like. We had a thread about a two-year-old getting run over by two trucks, and the first few pages were puns. In fact, the only backlash I see these days is against pretty obvious racism or misogyny. I guess I have to assume the people complaining are just racists who hide their mental illness behind "dark humor."

They just want to go all out, like the goony manchildren who went off about "IF A BLACK MAN CAN SAY IT..." poo poo a while back. More painfully ignorant than out and out racist. And it does seem that people really hesitate to say hosed up poo poo, unless its like the baby thread. That's the rare exception. There's so much more that COULD be done but it seems people hold back. But then again, this is GBS and not where I come for comedy. Just the trainwrecks like Atarikiller or "Is this girl legit" threads. Oh also: Shitweasle and the massive plant growing out of a goon's septic tank. THOSE are the threads that brought me here from PBNation.

Pretty much this, you have to tread carefully now as there is some gigantic pussy ready to call you down for some random offence as they are too uptight. I have a mix from some poster named Lobsterboy who screamed at the top of his lungs over music like Radiohead or the "Loving You" instead screaming, "Raping You". I should put it up later, it's loving insanity.

One thing I really thought that set SA apart from other forums back in 2000 or so was how much people posted pictures here. The image based humor, including macros, Photoshops and just random funny pictures, was one of the biggest reasons why I started lurking SA more than other forums of the time and then finally registered when you couldn't even read the forums without an account (that had by then started to cost money). Back in the day, there weren't even free image hosts, so you had to arrange your own hosting which often meant paying actual money for it. Looking back I think that's one of the biggest differences in internet forums since I started coming to SA and I actually think that a big reason why 4chan became so popular was that you could post your random wacky picture there so easily without going through the trouble of uploading it to another hosting or jumping through some other hoops.

I'm pretty sure this happened in a goon video chat, but I can't remember exactly when. It was right around when I first started lurking some many years ago. Basically some guy decided to see what would happen if he shot up with Coke (the beverage, not the coke that everyone else shoots up). Anyone else know what I'm talking about, this glorious man and his apparent dream to become a diabetic?

And then along came imageshack. Cue every loving image posted on the forums being followed by "thx imageshack!" which was ultimately so annoying it got banned as a host here. Also it was pretty lovely. e: oh hey, it's still even word filtered: imageshark So apparently you mods can still do those!

Honestly I like SA way better now, even with or maybe especially with the 'uptight-ness' you guys bitch about. I didn't join for years because it was a terrible forum full of 19-year old gamer dudes clinging to 'edgy' humor. Now it is for more than just that subset, but understandably the original crew is now super-butthurt they no longer have a place to be casually racist or bigoted. I like that the forums are for older smarter people now. There are plenty of places to be dumb on the internet - perhaps reddit will suit you better?

I've been lurking since 2003 and while I sometimes miss the "wilder" days of old, this place is far more valuable to me as a source of information and (usually) thoughtful discussion now. I don't know if that speaks to how pathetic mainstream media is or to how much SA has changed or both, but that's how it seems to be these days.

Pretty sure that this form of blatant ageism and ignorance toward age-related issues is deeply offensive to certain members of the community who I've taken it upon myself to defend. If you're not careful, I'll have to jump down your throat with an uptight moral agenda and smugly imply you're a bigot and worse to shame you into avoiding anything which might ever be conceived as remotely off-colour ever again. For the good of the forums.

I don't know whether you looked at the forums before your 2007 join date, but racism has always been outlawed since I signed up. Outside of FYAD I've never seen anyone be racist, casual or otherwise, and get away with it. When people say that forum members are too sensitive these days, they're talking about posts like this from the Shoe Riot thread ... Guy Fleegman posted:"Race for New Air Jordan Sneakers Turns Ugly at a Metro Atlanta Mall." Some folks are just LOOKING to be offended, and it only takes one of these types of posters to derail a decent thread (they seem to be able to shout loudest for some reason). I don't know what image newer members have in their heads, but the days of goons donning white hoods and burnings crosses with gay abandon never existed.

I wonder how many memes SA has created. Earlier today I watched a World of Warcraft ad on TV which featured Chuck Norris and a voiceover doing Norrisisms that would get you banned really quick, but didn't that start here? I remember a thread where someone had made a Vin Diesel fact generator, perhaps based on a Photoshop thread. If Chuck Norris came from that or if someone outside the forum picked up on the Vin Diesel thing and did it, I don't know, but I bet Mr Norris appreciates his career revival. My favorite thing about SA is the quality and effort (some) posters (sometimes) put in, either in making a Photoshop joke, some sort of 100-pager about a situation around their house or just a computer game megathread with all the info you want in the OP. I like motorcycles, SA has the best motorcycle forum. I like photography, SA has best photography forum. If I liked pets a lot, I'm sure I'd read Pet Island a lot and that it's the best of its kind.

That's exactly it, I am not asking to run around screaming racial slurs as that's always been terrible. But it's the polite society coming in saying you have to be nice to everyone and if you're going to be mean, don't say anything at all. The forums used to run on a policy of "being a moron? get your poo poo run in." That still persists in some of the subforums like YOSPOS, the sports sections and the music areas. But in a lot of the others like games or cinema, you get called out or put on probation.

Feel free to tl;dr, I think this is more for me than anyone else. This thread has brought back many fond (and sadly, forgotten) memories. I remember laughing a lot during the halcyon days of the dating thread, porblems, Hakan, tribute.avi, LLJK griefing and all the rest. The personalities that populated the forums seem even bigger and more colorful in hindsight. I'm thankful for the reminder. Are the forums better or worse? I think people are worse, especially having dealt with some truly odious and selfish assholes over the past 10+ years. Then again, maybe I (and the forums, collectively) have simply discovered the jerks that were already out there. Or maybe it's just easier and more publicly acceptable for people to express themselves without thinking, making them look like complete fucksticks in the process. It's probably a mix of all of the above. Place the blame wherever you like - the depressed economy, declining education, a learned sense of entitlement, insular subcultures, or general xenophobia. Regardless, I've encountered many more folks with myopic worldviews who are ready and willing to lash out at any perceived slight. I find it intolerable when these people are tolerated, but this seems to be the norm nowadays. I certainly don't recall the army of white knights, with their visors soldered shut, willing to defend any reprehensible cause or worthless piece of human garbage. Despite having "grown up", it's nice to relive those memories and smile, however crude the humor may have been. It's a horrifying revelation to discover that many of things you were taught and took for granted are complete and utter lies. Not only that, the lies are being perpetuated right in front of your eyes and no one seems to care. At least, for a time, SA was a refuge and an honest parody of the lovely world we live in. Thanks again to all those crazy posters who made this lurker laugh until he cried.
