That thread was glorious if only for the first page or two where people posted "Congratulations!" without knowing the whole story mixed with posts consisting solely of "hahahahahaha" by people who did. quote:fookoof came out of the closet to say: I really wish I could find the GIF that goes with this... If you've been around for awhile, you can GO BACK IN TIME by looking at your avatar. They are numbered, so you can roll back the numbers. Here's my list! Please note the bouncy alien avatar that EVERYONE seemed to have around here before 2002. I made my frame by frame and it was an awesome thing to have for about a year.

I always like threads like this because they bring out all the old timers that I enjoyed reading back then. Now I have no clue know who's posts are worth it to read. I am just glad gimmicks are gone for the most part. Posters like Human 2.0 and that guy who would make up those fake stories were horrible. I can't remember that guys name. He would start out the post with a plausible story and then it would turn in to some stupid twist at the end (I know I am in the minority about not liking him).

Earwicker posted:I think front page content is still good, though I don't read it as often as I used to. The forums culture has changed and become somewhat more mainstream, but this was really part of the same process happening to internet culture in general, its not really an SA specific thing. It has become a bit more insular, and is no longer one of the leading generators of content like it used to be, its become eclipsed to an extent by sites like 4chan and especially reddit. Part of that is because traditional messageboards are themselves becoming a bit outdated, and also because SA asks for more effort from OP's. Overall I think what is responsible for making SA different is really the interent itself changing rather drastically over the last decade. I don't think its really a "better or worse" issue. Awhile back I read a great article about the natural progression of forums. Essentially it talked about how they started off with a lot of young adults and sort of mature with their users. Many form their own cliques and memes and thus it's harder to attract newer members to replenish the older ones. It is interesting to see the progression. The sub-forums are much more mature. I'd put SAS at or above any of the sports specific forums out there. Same goes for games and other sub-forums. I think that's pretty cool to have such a dynamic forum that doesn't lose quality as you get more specific. GBS is much different though. Used to have more tomfoolery (someone did mention e/n threads helping that out) and now seems more like politics-lite.

It has been a while, hasn't it? The forums have gotten older. Now we mostly have jobs, I think. I seem to remember a goon meet in Costa Mesa with maybe 15% of the total active posting population, right after SA Forums posters were called goons. Was this the second goon meet? Third? Anyway, goatse.cx was brought up, and (a few days later) became A Thing. My '01 forums self wished I'd registered after that meet, instead of a few months later, because now my regdate is the youngest of the 'old ones.'

Everything used to just kind of be in GBS as well, now a lot of content has moved to various subforums, and the the subforums have started to branch off of each other in various ways. There also used to be a lot more ban-me threads. The last one I can remember is the guy jizzing on his keyboard shavings and then eating them. I do miss the threads where we could see the rantings of someone who had gone insane.

My good friend Waterhaul registered 2 accounts after we spent so much time lurking in Ghost Story and Photoshop threads. I can remember reading Cliff Yablonski in the computer labs back during my first year of college (02-03). During the summer I went through a stack of CDs in my desk drawers - folders and folders of smilies, gifs, loving happycat, a lot of goon creations, that picture of lowtax in the pool. A lot of stuff that doesn't entertain me anymore, but more the knowledge that it once did.

I try not to think about how long I've been here. I still don't get FYAD. The biggest changes really seem to be that the community felt much more close-knit in the past, which was probably just a function of user size more than anything. That, and with fewer specific subforums people probably interacted across their groups more. GBS has really changed though, it's true there were a ton of crap threads you might have to wade through, but some of them could really turn into comedy gold on accident. I'm not sure Yorba Linda Water District would make it on the modern day forums (though I do believe that was actually FYAD started, so maybe?). All in all though, SA by far is one of the best forums around that I've seen.

I joined during the Zidane thread, and it was just so amazing watching all the submissions come in. I couldn't believe that one message board could contain so much talent. To see SA in its golden years was magnificent, though it had some growing pains to get through before being the stable, awesome resource it is now. It seems like it should get more recognition for being such an awesome site, but I don't mind being an internet hipster, knowing full well that most of the internet humor you find these days originates from here. I'd say that I'm proud, but you guys would call me a douchenipple and tell me to go gently caress myself.
