Skeleton archers are pure murder. Raise shields, put up resilience, haste yourself, slow, stun, pull out all the stops because each can hit harder than a boss.

Edit: Connected now, we'll see if I get dropped after a few minutes of playing.

Still seems to be dropping me

For content:

How should I be dealing with spellcasters as a Bulwark? I'm level 18 now, and I was previously undefeated but I died three times this level, every time to spellcasters. Sometimes it was because I shouldn't be there yet (attack on Derth) but other times it was just because I didn't have a great way to deal with magical damage yet.

My current strategy when I see a caster is to Rush to them and use Assault (kills practically everything in one hit), but when there are more than one or when there are other enemies in the way, I feel like I can't really do much, short of switching in to gear with the proper resists.

Is Con the stat I should be pumping to survive longer against casters?

It's always doing that and some of the time it's mistaken anyway. I just ignore it since it seems really hard to actually disable online connectivity once you've logged in once. I think you have to physically delete the online content in the data folder.

Crag Hack, an easygoing man, with a passion for combat, wine and lots of women.

I started by playing as a couple Dwarf Berserkers. They own. I cleared Derth at level 12, but then he died over and over again because I tried the challenge in Antimagic Racist City at level 12. My second character didn't try that and was basically invincible in Tier 2 dungeons and killed everything. I bought an awesome epic dwarven-steel sword that was immune to teleportation from the relic guy in Last Hope.

I went into the Temporal Rift. It turns out The Sword, Not ME, was immune to teleportation. I would get teleported by monsters and then die trying to retrieve it over and over again.

So, my worries are assuaged, adventure mode does get crazy.

FYI, if anyone is having trouble with the start, dwarfs get a Dwarfbro who is essentially an AI-controlled Dwarf Berserker. He leaves once you finish the starting dungeon, but he can solo that place by himself if he doesn't get surrounded. He steals some XP from you, but when the boss dies you'll be over level 5 regardless. The dwarf boss is also one of the easier ones.

If your starting location is Scintillating Caverns, just go somewhere else and come back later. Seriously, that place is annoying.

As for me I unlocked Cursed and Archmage and I really want to play one, but I can't really figure out how to play them.

Check your router/cable modem? Could be an actual connection problem maybe?

Your firewall wouldn't be blocking this game - you'd get one of those warning popups in the action center if it was, asking you if you want it to have public/private access. Windows doesn't tend to go crazy firewall blocking for the most part.

Yeah I've kind of been feeling the same way. Love the game but the lack of randomization makes it rough to play as a roguelike sometimes.

Archmages rock. Get flame and manathrust to lvl 5 for the beam attack ASAP, and combined with arcane power that's a one two punch that can kill most things. A single point in Freeze makes a good debuff that will lock down even bosses. I got arcane shield together with a drain life weapon - this meant that when I hit things with my spells sometimes I'd get a shield, and with my heal spells that kept me alive through most boss fights. Until I met those skeletons...

I had a lot of luck on my archmage going lightning-focused (I unlocked the storm tree with a different character), rank 5 lightning bolt will 1-shot a LOT of poo poo early in the game. You'll need manathrust as backup damage and for dealing with lightning-immune stuff though. Nova and Shock apply daze (most of the time), great for getting a bit of breathing room/healing up. I found this route more effective/safer than my failed attempt at a Fire run, since most fire spells don't do all their damage instantly it gave enemies time to fight back.

Most important thing about archmage though is playing defensively - max phase door ASAP and use it to GTFO any time poo poo gets dangerous. The other most important survival thing I found is getting a good damage absorb rune, it's applied instantly so you can pop it any time you think you'll be getting hit soon. Also, dark areas are dangerous, since a mages biggest strength is blowing poo poo up at long distance - get a rank or 3 in illuminate (rank 3 can blind enemies), and you can use arcane eye to scout ahead if you know the general room layout (great for Bill's room in Trollmire, for example, to see if he's coming after you).

Very awesome game and just what I was looking for after wanting something slightly more complicated than Dredmor.
Anyway, I'm wondering if there is a mod that adds food, drink and maybe need for rest to the game? Something similar to how New Vegas does it, in that it doesn't really make it that much harder but gives it a bit more immersion.

I liked my fire attack since with cooldowns as they are, I can only cast every third turn anyway. Fire spells are more consistent and damaging than Lightning, so what I typically did was Fire, Manathrust, use my third to pop an utility spell (for example, flameshock for the stun, freeze to freeze them) or run away and all through that my fire spell is doing its damage. I hadn't unlocked the Storm spells though, seems like they'd be nice.

I didn't really bother with the divination spells. With a phial and a +1 light radius helm, I could see everything anyway.

I swear I wrote something funny here.

The server has been having some connection issues recently. I saw it come up in IRC last night. DarkGod, the guy who wrote most of the game and who maintains te4.org is going through some real life poo poo and may not be around much over the next few days/week(s) (his words). Hopefully when he gets his real life poo poo sorted he can sort out what's going on with the game.

For those having infinite cast loops from the m menu Can you guys file bug reports on the Tome forums for me? If there's a lua error that happened can you add that too along with a link to your vault characters? This might be a chronomancy bug that I can take care of while Darkgod is away. But please don't post the errors or vault characters here. I don't want to turn this thread into a bug report thread (especially considering the game is in beta and the guy who fixes 90% of the bugs doesn't keep a close eye on this thread or even have an SA account).

e: I actually think I've tracked this bug down and posted a fix on the Tome forums for DarkGod when he gets back. But what I said about bugs in general is good practice. If you guys have the time the Tome forums bug section is DarkGod's official bug tracker so posting bugs there can help improve the chances of stuff getting fixed for next beta. If it DarkGod doesn't respond right away don't worry about it. He tends to go through all the bugs before every beta and try to track everything down he can.

Lightning is amazing from the get-go because it's a beam. Even though the damage isn't reliable, you can do fun aiming/maneuvering tricks to hit multiple guys. Flame doesn't become a beam until level 5. Manathrust is a beam at 3 and also owns.

Not yet Lodin. The ability to modify the Tome module is pretty new so not a lot has been released yet. But the module can be modified if people want to start such a project. I believe all you need to know is some Lua and modding instructions on the wiki. There's also a lot of coders/contributors that hang out on IRC if you need more help.

Sure, but you can get them there pretty quick and the flame and mana trees are fairly handy later on for manaflow (2nd source of mana regen) and flameshock. (AOE stun)

It's nothing special really if you've played other roguelikes. It's a little bigger than most levels but it's not gargantuan. It's a pretty boring dungeon though since it's just filled with bandits and junk.

Just for whatever reason, it runs slower than all the rest of the dungeons.
