BTW, here's http://www.reddit.com/r/AdviceAnimals/

It's not the bottomless well of "give me free sex, I'm an angry white man" that mensrights is, but it's probably the second biggest mouthbreathing creep-train on reddit.

Examples include Good Girl Gabby (shut up and suck my dick and don't have opinions if you want men to like you), Friendzone Fiona (she doesn't have sex with me, why can't she be more like Good Girl Gabby) and so on. It's a loving dump.

*e: I take that back. The most creative thing I've ever seen on reddit was people crudely hand-drawing "rage faces". Which, itself, became an overused and lovely and unfunny meme.

My favourite is the Foul Bachelorette Frog, written by girls joking about the foul behaviour they get up to when nobody's around, basically silly things like this. Then you have all of these other ones which are so obviously written by bitter lonely nerds it's hilarious.

Women can be exhibitionists, or just seeking validation, whatever.

They call out fakes in the comments using tineye, so yes, they're real. In looking for creeper quotes there, it's usually hard because creeps get downvoted/banned on sight.

But of course, stuff like "hurr you're probably a bitch if you're single" doesn't fall under "creeper" per se, but General Redditry, so that's okay.

Well hell. I guess old Tumnus is just a loverman by trade.

I like Reddit for certain topics, but god I can't stand that palpable aura of "desperate and lonely man age 14-40." It permeates everything. Random threads in video games or hobby chats devolve into spontaneous pity parties or two-minute hate sessions. I could really go the rest of my life without ever seeing the phrase Friendzone, forever alone, etc. Women post sometimes like, "hey it's hard being single/unattractive/lonely as a woman too!" Then promptly gets run the gently caress over by a dumptruck of frustrated men telling her all she needs to do is open her legs to have all the sex she wants, and as if it were obvious:

http://www.reddit.com/r/ForeverAlon...ne_guys/c3d8slm

quote:

SEX+EMOTIONAL CONNECTION>SEX>NOTHING

It's just, so pathetic and above all else... young. It's such an immature voice, petty and hateful. I'm married and have a kid, but I remember being single. Yes, it sucked. But sometimes I feel like if you had bottled all of my adolescent whining, poetry, journals, short stories, car trips with friends and whining over drinks, MAYBE MAYBE MAYBE you could distill something this bad from all of that concentrated angst. Then I read yet another screed about girls, and it's so vehement and misogynist. A few clicks away from these posts on the same umbrella website are porn aggregators, approaching infinity, and I just feel like this and that are related.

I used to be able to deal with the locker room atmosphere of web communities I read, especially since I like to read about gaming. Reddit keeps finding new and amazing ways of making me grimace, but at least I can downvote them I suppose. I just don't feel like the culture was always this toxic. Maybe it's just my bias.

And if we were once giants we may reminisce of the days past and of our greatest prominence, climbing lofty mountains in a single stride. Yet even at such a breathless height we could see over an endless horizon: Old rounded ranges of green, sharp peaks of red mountains with jagged slopes, blue mountains with snow-capped peaks. Mountains sprung up from the earth before our eyes. Nature is its rawest form, only just becoming aware of itself. Beneath forested slopes and valleys, waterfalls lie in secret, waiting to be unleashed, to be discovered even to themselves. "Dig into me. Delve. Plumb my depths. " But even as we came upon such marvels, greater ones appeared before our eyes, beckoning us. Without looking back we departed the luscious, fertile valley. For we are on a journey of exploration -- there is no time to tarry where our flag has been planted, all of time is for the return to our conquered lands. And after all lesser lands have finally been despoiled and laid bare, ages away beyond sight lies the mountain and the valley. But now we can longer return. As we stand in a field brown from drought, we now realize that even as we climbed down the mountain, our might was on the wane. Now years of conquest have put weariness onto age. We are no longer the giants of our youth. All about us lay bare fields and modest knolls, and a horizon that fades into haze. With what strength is left in us, we plant our last flag in the field and build our castle on top of a small hill.

Ehhhhh this is really a weak criticism. Reddit is a forums site, except unlike SA you can make any subreddit you'd like, for free, at any time. You can also post for free, whenever, without even providing an email address. It's clear they're trying to be a catch-all site; the frontpage is sort of like Fark/GBS but you can also find a subreddit for any topic you'd like, and if it doesn't exist you can create it.

Why should the admins butt in if it's not something explicitly illegal? Some of the grossout subreddits are obviously terrible, but why is it the job of the reddit admin team to remove that stuff? They're more of a common carrier than anything, IMO.

Will they? No.

So what can be done? What we do. SA (and Anderson Cooper) raised a huge stink over /jailbait and got it closed (more popped up, of course). But spreading the general message that Reddit is racist, sexist shithole that deals in child porn and teaches how-to-surprise sex seminars and is generally the most vile and loathsome website in history, THAT might produce change.

I think people are talking past each other here. You're bringing up that Reddit works on a different system than SA and other sites while other people are trying to bring up the weaknesses that lack of moderation can bring.

What TVT and Reddit have taught me is that unmoderated systems can suffer massive disadvantages if the communities are rotten. People migrate and emigrate from site to site as well. Both noted sites used to be a lot healthier (though I think TVT is slowly recovering last time I checked) until certain people moved in, using it as a pedestal for their views.

Now we could sit down and have an argument over unmoderated websites and their merits and flaws but I think I'd rather see this thread flourish as mocking the worst bits of Reddit. Seeing this gassed again would be a shame.

There is a moral obligation, if not a legal one. The reason people have a problem with Reddit is they do not follow through on that moral obligation. And it's not just a singular area of Reddit that it's confined to. The worst of the worst are allowed to go anywhere on Reddit, create as many objectionable subs as they want and they're not stopped. Because of this, one can only take away that the creators of Reddit are okay with what is being said. They are okay with people discussing being attracted to pre-pubescent children. They are okay with people talking about how to effectively surprise sex a woman. They are okay with people talking about how anyone who isn't white needs to be killed. They are okay with people talking about how women are inferior and deserve to be beaten.

If you had a friend that you hung out with and they spouted those things, would you simply say "Well, he has a right to say those things and I can't judge him for his opinion." Maybe you would. But if you did you would also be saying "I'm okay with my friends views on objectionable topics."

Morally, the type of things that get discussed here are reprehensible. No one should be okay with it. It doesn't matter if it's someones opinion. Just because someone holds that opinion doesn't mean they can't be judged by it or called out on it. We should always call out someone who holds such distasteful, hateful, and perverse opinions.

The owners of Reddit host that site, they are responsible for the content therein. And they choose to do nothing.

Edmund Burke posted:

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

We're not moral crusaders here, but we see bullshit and we call it out. It's literally the least we can do, and it's still too much for Reddit to do to itself. That's shameful.

Muck and Mire posted:

You keep bringing this up. Please quote something from FYAD that's on par with what we discuss from Reddit. I'd like to see the awfulness that you're sure is there. There has been a gradual change in general internet humor and culture due to sites like 4chan and Reddit. It really is tiresome seeing people mindlessly parrot awful memes and I've started to see a very disturbing trend where it honestly seems like poo poo like glorifying "jailbait" has become genuinely popular and accepted. People want to be accepted so badly that they almost seem to positively internalize all of the poo poo they were being "ironic" about years ago to fit in. Plenty seem to just be impressionable children. I've been on videogame servers that promote that terribly unfunny my little pony meme and so many of these people honestly, honestly have become emotionally involved with promoting and defending a children's cartoon show. It is really pathetic and what's worse you can just see a bunch of tweens blindly doing the same without really understanding that it was supposed to be a bad joke in the first place.

There's a reason catchphrases have been bannable on this forum for as long as I can remember posting here - they are incredibly lazy and over time result in a communal comedy that requires no effort and becomes horribly recursive.
