The dialogue is reaching Silver age levels of exposition. So much wasted space!

Even fixing the dialogue, there's no transition between panels. Tarvis' tranformation just suddenly occurs between panels 5 and 6. It ruins any sense of action or continuity when you just jump over something like that. That you actually added something like that with the last panel makes it even more jarring.

Really, I don't even think the art style is holding back this comic as much as Mookie's complete inability to use art to convey action.

This is unbelievable. This detail should have been very early exposition, setting up the central conflict in the arc of Jayden's Luanianism versus Stunt's experience with Scalpianism. Instead, whether Mookie invented this on the spot or just forgot to ever mention it (it's the former), Stunt just seemed completely apathetic to basic details of the world he lives in, and there's no dramatic tension anywhere. Everything comes across as heavy-handed moralizing for the benefit of a one-dimensional "rogue" instead of lessons that Stunt can internalize and shape his worldview.

Now watch as, having plugged in this plothole, he proceeds to never use it in any meaningful way. This detail is literally just to fill in a superficial plothole so Mookie can continue writing whatever entertains him at the time.

Considering how very Fullmetal Alchemist the whole plot with the King and the Beast and Maltak was, that'd be my guess as to where he's directly cribbing this from.

Yes! That was the name of it. I could keep going about loving 90's video games with more depth than this lovely comic. How about the perfume-scented rich town in Legend of Gaia that had a horrible underground slave trade?
Illusion of Gaia, which it's funny you bring it up, because it was something of a sequel to Soul Blazer. I reccomend tracking down Terranigma, the third in the series, if you never did. Those were some rich games that did a ton more world building in a restrictive medium than Mookie has in ten years with an infinite canvas. God drat.

(That town was named Freija, by the way. Doesn't have the ring Barthis or Errosus does, I know)

If it were any writer but Mookie, I'd be anticipating a plot twist concerning Heaven. After all, we have entire arcs set in Hell, but Mirands says that seers go blind when they try to look into Heaven? That would have been really clever foreshadowing, hiding it behind the obvious foreshadowing of Bulgak exploding ten strips later.

Instead, we'll probably end up there within a few arcs, and it will be as dull and uninspired as every other plane. The only interesting plot twists in Dominic Deegan are when Mookie subverts expectations by doing something so fantastically retarded, nobody would have guessed.

Momgan threw Celesto into her personal pocket dimension solitary confinement cell. The painter was driven to suicide by Luna's sister who then sold the paintings to the king. It was all a load of shite.
And yet, it managed to be a more relevant storyline than stalking Beast Masters.

Danzou

My favorite part of those arcs is that what little forward progression was made in the Beast plot - Celesto revealing the Battlecasters and literally framing the King as in cahoots with the Beast - the King outright dismisses as being "minor distractions". Nothing even loving mattered. Jesus.

The fact that Stunt apologized to Jayden is irrelevant because of the dog whistle slut shaming going on with Lezzie. Terraciano didn't remove the misogyny from the comic even while attempting to redeem a misogynist.

This is too amazing for words.

Mookie needs to see this. It's the perfect response to the bullshit he's trying to feed us. Stunt is in character, it advances the pro-mmisogyny plotline... and going to the Eldariat Desert to die would be actual foreshadowing instead of a cheap ratings stunt.

It refutes everything Mookie believes, and does it with better writing, too. gently caress!

I'm stuck in bed fighting a cold right now, so I thought I'd take a crack at writing Dominic Deegan: The Collectible Card Game.

The Rundown: There are two types of cards - Character cards and Action cards. Character cards, of course, represent the characters in Dominic Deegan; once played, they remain in play. Action cards represent events or plot elements in the comic; they can be used to give your characters "Deegan Points" (or remove "Deegan Points" from your opponent's character). Once a character acquires enough Deegan Points, that character ascends to "Deeganhood". The first player to have 3 characters ascend to Deeganhood wins!

Sample Gameplay:

Player 1: "I play 'Holy Pilgrimage' (Give a male character and a female character 1 Deegan Point each) on my Stunt and Jayden cards!"

Player 2: "Well, I play 'Villainous Past' (Remove 2 Deegan Points from a character) on your Stunt!"

Player 1: "Well, I play 'Ret-Con' (Remove a negative effect on a character, and give that character 2 Deegan Points instead) on my Stunt card, which cancels out your 'Villainous Past'!"

Player 2: "drat! Okay... I play 'Impalement' on your Stunt card!"

Player 1: "You can't do that; Impalement only works on female characters."

Player 2: "Oh, right. I play it on Jayden instead, then."
Was this intentionally based on the Dvorak rules? Because now I really want to play Deegan Mock-themed Dvorak.

Thinking about Mookie's life, especially ten years down the road, makes me despondent. There's a chance he'll have a successful life after Deegan, right? Not in art or storytelling in any creative field, of course, but I hate to think of him being a forty year old manchild with no marketable skills.

It's important to note there's a population that goes to these conventions in order to attend these panels and learn how to make their own manga-inspired comics. They see Mookie's panel, ooh and ahh that he's "making it", and add it to their rigid panel itinery.

Yes, Mookie is helping breed more Mookies.

Also, Stunt's faith in Jayden's faith will be stronger than the chosen's faith minus Greg's faith in Jayden's faith and so Jayden will be purified again through faith and good god let's get it of the loving desert.

It's convenient that you bring up that quote, because reading through the previous threads, I could not figure out for the life of me why it was particularly hate worthy. The quote in question:

I figured that, at worst, he was being intentionally snarky to an overly sensitive girl, and goons were white knighting over it. Even with the added context, I can't really see this as more reprehensible than the rest of what he does. Perhaps I still don't have the complete story, though.
When I first started on these threads, I thought everybody was being completely over the top and picking nits at a mediocre comic. "Come on, guys, he can't be that transparent about hating jocks!"/"Okay, these pictures of bloody women are bad, but misogynist? Really?"

By the time I'd slogged through most of one of the archived threads, I'd been inundated by enough examples of Mookie's shamelessness that I understood how people were making such huge inferences from relatively innoccous strips. Mookie's brand of terrible isn't as overt as Buckley - it's little bits and pieces, adding up over time to form the picture of a broken man. You stop giving him the benefit of the doubt, because you can find a dozen supporting panels for any deficiency you can hang on him.

Also, wasn't this comic slated to end this year? It's clear that Mookie doesn't have an endgame planned and is just merrily skipping around side characters until he brings out Dominic for an arc no more remarkable than any before it.

I don't even think there will be much narrative distance if he decides to do a direct sequel. Just a new name for old poo poo.
