Re-reading the series for the nth time currently. Decided to see whether Sanderson or anyone else had said anything about more books coming out, and then I find the godawful pilot Red Eagle put out in February

:laffo: never gonna be a WoT TV series

Not to mention the events in the book are basically happening in the WoT world's equivalent of the dark ages/early enlightenment.

Blood feuds would complicate that reasoning.

Although I'm not certain I buy this interpretation:

Calef posted:

Imagine you live in an inhospitable wasteland. Your whole world is your small settlement, which contains almost all your friends and loved ones, your wife, your mother and father, your children. A band of raiders from a neighboring tribe invades without warning and starts loving slaughtering everybody. You are a warrior; you pick up your spear. One of the invaders touches you without killing you.

"Oh, well," you say, dropping your weapons and serenely surrendering as your family is butchered before your eyes. "Ya got me fair and square!" You then go and serve the man who murdered your family, without ever stabbing him to death in his sleep.

It's been a while since I read the books closely, but from what I remember this is not the process that gets followed. Combat happens among the Aiel and is chaotic as it is elsewhere. Only after the fighting stops does anyone take stock and figure out what Ji Eh Toh requires of them (and, in addition, whether they wish to even abide by it - as it isn't compulsory to become gai shain).

e: That being said I would have really liked some deeper exposition about Aiel culture and history, particularly as it relates to the different warrior societies. We get introduced to several of them, but that's as far as the details go for a bunch of them (ie: what are Knife-hands?)

I always figured Cairhien and Tear to be France and Spain analogues respectively, but frankly there doesn't seem to be a straight 1:1 comparison for any of the nations - Jordan seemed to like to pick and choose from various like-societies - which made them more interesting imo

She doesn't really find a bunch of issues that Mat should have been aware of though. It's stuff like minor injuries that are being concealed that she likely uncovered with the One Power. She plays it like Mat is lounging on the job but overall she is fairly impressed.

The point isn't whether she uncovered stuff Matt missed, the point is she knows what to look for

ie: she's more competent than an initial reading indicates.

I'm in the midst of my nth readthrough - though I'm now reading to my SO (who has never read the series before despite my promoting it as cool and also good for years) like some kind of third-rate audio-book. It's interesting getting someone's reaction who didn't start reading the books in early high-school like I did.

She started out hating Mat/Egwene, liking Rand/Perrin/Nynaeve, neutral on others (up to book 3 or so)

This progressed to extremely disliking Faile/Perrin/the Aes Sedai in general/The Seanchan, liking Rand/Nynaeve (up to book 5 say)

And now that we're up to book 7 she loving hates Perrin/Faile/Elayne/The Aes Sedai, likes Egwene/Nynaeve/Rand/Mat

And book 7 starts with a real tiresome block of Perrin's whingy perspective

But yeah. I keep trying to get my fiancé to read the WoT but can't do it. I'm rereading it for the first time since 14 came out and its pretty cool knowing where Demandred was this time through. Also Mat is amazing always and Faile, and Elayne are the worst. Egwene just upsets me because everything is handed to her forever and she's always looking down on Rand who is struggling to walk to his own death to save the world its just infuriating. Not a thank you for anything ever.
It's important, I think, to keep in mind that from the get-go Egwene is a teenager, and most of the main cast are as well. How adept are teens in any era at putting themselves in the shoes of others to understand and appreciate their motivations? How adept are they at basic niceties?

I don't actually care to defend Gawyn and Egwene's relationship (or any of them really) but they may have spent quite a lot more time together that we didn't get to see in the period in book 2 where Egwene/Elayne/Nynaeve were actually in the Tower for an extended period of time

I'm not so sure. As it is we won't get to see what happens in Shara after all this, or Seanchan, or the other planned prequels, which is unfortunate.

While I like Sanderson's Mistborn stuff, I felt like the ending there was poorly executed as well. I haven't read any of his other books, maybe it's a common theme?

The implication is that it arose naturally as a result of the people of Aridhol embracing the ideas Mordeth presented. I would guess that means it could come back - after all, sealing up the dark one doesn't remove evil from the world.

They argue over this in the background in Rand POV scenes. To make things worse, she actually is falling for him.

This isn't quite right. Aviendha's feelings towards Rand change significantly in book 4 after going to Rhuidean - presumably because of what she saw there.

Given the lead time between when they made the deal for GoT and when it first aired, I don't think the timing would be terrible. Its gonna take them a while to figure out how to adapt this to TV and have effects that don't look like poo poo. I know a lot of people have joked about it, but I honestly think it might work better as an animated show, just because I can't see anyone having the budget for the effects.

WoT has way more special effect needs that GoT, and they're the kind that will look super cheesy if they aren't pulled off well

Yeah... much as I don't want to see an animated one I've thought about that too. I'm also wondering how you go about handling visuals of the Power. I mean, fireballs and poo poo like that is straightforward - but what about weaves like compulsion? Just handle it like Force persuasion or something? Only show weaves through the eyes of channelers?
