For those who don't know: Mandarin distinguishes meaning not just through the sounds of words, but through the rise or fall of the inflection with which you speak them. So while all those words are the "same" in terms of phonemes, the tonal inflections make the words quite distinct in a way that n buffalo is not.

The words themselves don't change based on inflection, except insofar as inflection gives clues about which particular homonym the speakers means.
