I agree on all accounts, but I am still so thrilled to have a job that pays more than minimum wage that I am willing to put up with all sorts of poo poo. I would say yea, it is a bit paranoid of me except that apparently it is just our branch that can't go even though it was people at a vaguely affiliated branch in Cheonon that got in trouble and only the foreigners are prohibited. I 'trust' the co-teachers mostly, but I don't particularly want to risk it around the clubs seeing as they usually frequent the clubs. This thread has taught me not to completely trust Korean co-workers.

Lived in a state that didn't always enforce the minimum wage so if I wanted work I had to accept some lovely jobs. That third of instance comes from 100 hours a week as a carpenter/metal worker/electrician at $250 per week before taxes.

I found out that V-hall isn't in Euljiro, but instead right near Hongik. So that makes it so much easier.

Also, for those keeping track we are starting to suspect that they just made up the whole reason for not going into Hongdae. Nobody else in any of the other branches has heard of anything and I haven't seen any news reports on it. I assumed that foreigners + weed would be all over the news for a bust of 6 people. I have no idea why they would make it up, other than it would be fun for management.

Making poo poo up for no reason seems to be a hobby of anyone with any power here. We had one guy busted for hash in Ulsan and it was unavoidable, news coverage, co-teachers talking to you, a mandatory police orientation nonsense, I can't imagine six people not making the news. That's at least a solid week of gently caress foreigners editorials, would be a waste.

The only reasoning I can think of is they want an excuse for 11 month firings, and so they decide to ban you from the two areas they can be reasonably certain you will go to at some point. Then they can lie about seeing you there and hey, we warned you.

The only thing stupider than banning you from going to certain parts of the city because of what other people did is actually going along with it. No one is even going to remember that rule in a week anyways, so remembering over it for more than 4 more days is pretty much a waste of time. Hell, you could probably even mention how you went to Hongdae on the weekend to your boss and he or she wouldn't even think about it.

DontAskKant

Oh, they have stuck to the story pretty consistently. It's been brought up for the past two and a half weeks. Though they are pretty fast and loose with really vague written warnings so they have their 11 month firing angle pretty wrapped up there. I wouldn't be surprised if all 7 of us have one by now and we are one of the more reserved branches.

I know what you mean. I have worked in 3 different hagwons in 3 different cities. I was treated really well in all my situations. Granted, I could find small things to bitch about. But all in all, they respected me, treated me fairly, and stayed out of my personal business. I guess I have just gotten lucky.

I do wonder sometimes if it is because I am married and have a kid. That puts ne up on a higher social scale, and maybe I get treated accordingly. But I know that the other teachers in my hagwons have been treated well too, so maybe I have just gotten lucky and have been in good schools.

My hagwon hasn't done anything offensive, but one of the teachers has consistently been kind of a bitch. I dont know if it's on purpose or if she's just kind of stupid and doesn't realize she makes teaching harder. She told one of my classes that I smoke for some reason, which they went on about for a while until another teacher made up an excuse (now they think I only smoke special nicotine free cigarettes because I'm trying to quit.)

And she told every class about the middle schooler pizza party. The middle school class is only 4 kids and later in the evening when there are no other classes so sometimes we get pizza. She told every single class so now I have to deal with huge classes of 10 year olds asking for pizza all the time.

The kids don't really like her either. One of the kids left the other day and the other kids told me its because she's a bad teacher.

Doctors and dentists in Korea are probably the profession that's most likely to be conversant in English and/or educated abroad (including English teachers, ironically) so it isn't really that hard. There's a couple places that specialize in foreigners, but it mostly seems like an excuse to overbill. Just do a waygook search and choose one at random.

Just for clarification, is she a Korean or foreign teacher? I agree with the others that it sounds like she isn't very fond of you, though if I were in that situation personally, I would probably confront her with a "Do you have a problem with me?" and cite the things she has done if she denies it, especially when she told everyone about the pizza thing.

Welp.

quote:

Police said Friday they have arrested and detained five people, including a Korean man with Canadian nationality, suspected of dealing marijuana in two separate drug rings.

Police also booked 31 others, including a 36-year-old college professor from the U.S., for investigation without physical detention for allegedly purchasing the drug from the arrested suspects, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said.

The Canadian national, a underground hip-hop singer working as a native teacher of English, identified only by the initial of his name H, allegedly sold marijuana to fellow English teachers from the U.S. and Canada as well as to an employee of a local industrial conglomerate, the police said.

The suspects are believed to have distributed about 438 grams of Canadian and locally-grown hemp in well-known private English education institutions in Seoul and nearby and southern cities since July last year, according to the police.

They are alleged to have divided roles among themselves to separately and secretly deliver and sell the drug.

Among those arrested or booked was a 31-year-old teacher of English employed by a private institution who allegedly smuggled Canadian hemp into Korea and sold it to fellow teachers, as well as a local college student who is suspected of buying marijuana to re-sell to local Koreans, including an office worker, a used-car dealer and a bar owner.

Alleging widespread marijuana smoking among foreign teachers, the police said the country needs a more thorough system to identify illegal hemp use among native English-speaking teachers here.

“We plan to further broaden our investigation as there are assumed to be more hemp-circulation rings involving native teachers (of English),” a police official said.

Under South Korean law, marijuana users can be sentenced to a maximum of five years in jail or fined up to 50 million won (US$44,500). (Yonhap News)

It's better this way. No one learns anything even halfway useful, but if you arrive when it starts you don't get paid for it.
I had to do a week, classes 9-5, three breaks, lights out at 11, booze prohibited (except for Koreans who could get drunk as gently caress and hoot and holler well into the wee hours)

It still doesn't make sense even with the ongoing technical war. In the 60s, sure, North Korean infiltration was a serious threat and since NK was better off economically, there was a real chance people might switch loyalties and revolt against the government. Now? There is absolutely zero chance that any significant number of South Koreans are going to defect or start a revolt or whatever. There is nothing good about NK, there is no threat. There is still an external military threat, but somebody making sarcastic remarks on Twitter has gently caress all to do with that.
