There is no conceivable way that you, a foreign teacher, making noise about this will end well for literally any participant in this story. Bake them some cookies in solidarity and then shut the hell up.

Welp because the Seoul government decided to divert funding from things like English/Science etc. to Free Lunches!!!! some public school NSET's wont get paid for another week. It is not a good time to be trying to get work as a public school teacher in this city.

If people really can't summon the balls to make one anonymous complaint to the MOE then they deserve to be rough-ridden by their insane principal. Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, give a Korean teacher some self-respect and you unravel the entire fabric of Korean society.

Onion Knight posted:insanity I can't believe that's true. My coteachers and I have always been of the same mind - what the gently caress are we doing here, let's sneak out early! Is this an elementary, middle, or high school? There's no reason to keep people there. In fact it poses a health risk, teachers nodding off on the drive home, students not getting teachers who are fresh. There's a multitude of reasons why this is insane. The work culture here really blows my mind. No one has heard of Henry Ford's workplace studies? A company gets the same number of widgets in 5 days/40hours as it does in 6 days/60 hours. The extra time is a waste of money. If it is true, I do understand why these people are scared shitless. There are schools in Daegu that have such a bad reputation that teachers are posted for only 3 years instead of 5. Getting the principle pissed off may result in a hosed up permanent record or a posting to a school that would require moving or buying a car. Having a dickhead principle can result in huge bills. Also, this is the guy who approves vacation time and signs off on various applications - one of my co-teachers lucked out an will be studying English at the development office. Say goodbye to that and any foreign vacation and this is just scratching the surface. No wonder they just bend over. If I were in your place I would show some camaraderie and stick it out with all the other teachers one night. Document the whole thing. Record it from 8:30am to 10-1am. Borrow the school's camera! Then deliver it to the MOE and if that does nothing, send it to KBS or put it up online. This poo poo is bananas. Also as usual, bitter vet crew has lost all compassion for Koreans and their working conditions and believe that the Prime Directive states we shouldn't interfere ever. Well, gently caress that - they brought us into these schools. We aren't passive observers; we are the embodiment of red tape cutting scissors.

Hey what am I looking for to find out if I have unlimited data? I have a bunch of texts from SK about my plan, and I think my data is unlimited but the guy at the store spoke just enough English to get it done but not enough that I'm confident we understood each other. Want to make sure before I run up a giant bill.

Unlimited plans are about 55,000 a month from the vendors here, but you have to add on the fee for your phone if you did it that way. My iPhone 3Gs would have been about 80,000 a month with an unlimited plan and the 2 year payment plan. I'm still rocking the 45,000 won plan and I've never exceeded my monthly 500 MB.

Okay, mine is 54 + the phone. If anyone knows the Korean word(s) I'd still like to assuage my paranoia by looking through the texts.

bobthedinosaur posted:Does anybody here go to graduate school in Yonsei or any other university in Korea as a foreigner? I'd like to hear more about it if so. the important: -~7mil won/semester, but scholarships are plentiful -being a native speaker is a huge advantage -korean classes are offered, offsetting the price for the classes i'd be taking if I were here in korea doing something else. It's teachers from Yonsei's KLI, though, which is a bit ugh. -option for dual degree programs with schools in the US, Japan, China (?), Switzerland, and starting next year Kazakhstan and Israel = 2 graduate degrees from 2 universities, but you gotta spend 1 year in each country. - if you're eligible to work while here, most classes are done in 3 hour blocks once a week instead of spreading them out MWF or something similar - makes it much easier on commuters and people who want to go to class 2-3 days/week and work the other days. the superficial: -tons of school events (read: alcohol or free food at almost all of them) -prolly ~40% foreign, nearly 75% women -yon-ko-jeon wee! -professors vary from accent-less english to heavily accented but i've yet to run into an ohmygodwhataretheysaying moment. Again, being a native speaker helps here. edit: and to address the notion that it's hard, i've only just started but it's not bad at all. midterms/finals might change my mind?
