Right, but from a Magic perspective it's so weird to not see "well, I think Crane is the right call for the metagame right now" or "Crab is clearly the most consistent" as the reasons to play a particular clan. This isn't criticism, just to be clear, it's just something that's always struck me as really different from my experience.

You do see that from the players that have a history of winning tournaments/placing well. It's usually constrained to private boards, though, as clan boards don't want to hear it. For example, I've won kotei while playing Dragon and Lion, and placed well with Crane, Scorpion, and Crab. (i used to be good at this game )

Unless your local scene is small and nobody else metas dishonor, then you might have a problem. But at the large tournament scale, there's nothing unreasonable about knowing you have an auto-loss in the swiss, even though it does suck a bit.

Also keep in mind that all of the dishonor players I know are complaining on facebook about how dishonor sucks and they aren't playing anymore and blah blah blah.

I don't know, maybe? But those are the only real options. How does the official tournament structure work?

Official tournament structure is almost always 45 minute rounds, one game per round. Elimination rounds can be either one game or best of 3, and the ones that go best of 3 get 90 minutes for 3 games. For that, the commonly used rule is "if in game one or three after 90 minutes, you have 15 additional minutes to finish the game. if time is up and you're in game two, whoever won game one wins the match."

Yes, crane has a scout stronghold that can run a passable military deck, I'm not sure about dishonor for crane this arc. I think in general crane is kind of in a bad place at EE base.

My other 2 losses were games that went to time and were pretty close so we were forced to roll dice to see who gets the win or we would both take game losses. Seems pretty annoying as I was playing at a much faster pace than my opponents.

Does this happen often in regular constructed tournaments?
Often enough. Dishonor vs honor used to be the biggest cause, then newer/slower players. The new design philosophy might take care of the dishonor vs honor timeout.
Some people will take the double loss regardless of board state because neither player won in the time allotted, but most players will concede if they're obviously losing the game.

To that end, could someone explain to me how "Skipping the Puddle" works, and how I would use it as defense. I was looking to have it help against cavelry, but i think I would need a "Plans Within Plans" then.

When you use the limited action on Skipping the Puddle, you put it into play and it gives you (the player) the battle ability to move one of your water shugenja in and take an additional action. It remains in play until you play another Kata card (unlikely) or until another player gets rid of it (I don't even know if that's possible).

But since its limited, i can only do it on my turn. And it only lasts for that turn, right?

The limited action is to put the card into play. When a card enters play, it stays there until something removes it from play. "Until the end of turn" is only the default for ongoing effects that don't have a stated duration.

This is what I've come up with when creating the Mantis deck I want to play. It uses Koshin Keep, and the goal is to flood the board with cheap navy/scout dudes and shoot the poo poo out my enemies. With arrows.

I was contemplating running the card Modifications, figuring that if I ever played in a Storyline game, I could come up with a reason why my bow was better than their bow. Also, card draw is nice.

Hiromi is your only non-ranged attack removal action, and that means Matsu Yuuto/Agetoki's trait of "Ranged Attacks may not target cards in this unit." will completely shut your deck down. Turn the flesh cutter arrows into either cursed relics or wyrmbone katanas. I am of the opinion that 3x peddler is way overkill, and I don't even like 2x except for card intensive combo/dishonor decks, and you should be running Peace in your fate deck anyways. Water is not vital enough to be running wisdom gained. 1x Chugo Seido would be a good holding add, as would Singh and Sachina. Madoka looks out of place. You should probably replace half+ of those followers with more battle strategies, for sure 3 sundering strike and 1 creating order.
18 strategies with only 3x strategic strike that does something on its own in battle is not the path to a military victory.

Nakoshi fills that slot though. If you show up to a battle with half your dudes not having printed actions, and the other player has printed actions on all of their dudes, you're burning fate cards at a faster rate. I would run one of the 7/8G guys with a battle action over Madoka, or go out of clan for Daigotsu Hotako (11g, preventing their best personality from performing actions is amazing) and Takasho (6g -3honor, move in + additional action, ranged 5).

No sideboards, and topaz champ does nothing unless it resolves when you have a Nakoshi/Madoka in play (or Unmei in very specific circumstances(the ones where Unmei is useless)). You could also go with the non-scout who has a ranged 5, or the magistrate who can bow or straighten something with lower gold cost.

Generally the good, worthwhile attachments cost as much or more than a personality, and it's a tradeoff of less attachment protection but more targets and more resilience to actions that affect entire units. It is a decklist I was given and not built myself, though. If I were to tweak it, I'd probably find room for 3x tsuruchi daikyu and I'd switch out a personality for Daigotsu Hotako because every deck needs Hotako.

The dragon and unicorn champions are also naga, so if you're going naga theme you could go with either of those clans so that you get clan holdings, the ability to gain honor, and so on. Cherry Blossom Festival stops your reactions as well, and scout decks like reactions since their recons are almost always reactions. Disgrace is just super mediocre at best; a good amount of the annoying control/dishonor actions are opens and entirely unaffected. Jurojins is nice because of the onetime fate recovery and the limited fate manipulation. I thought it was 'eh' too when I first saw it, but then I played a few games with it and now it goes in every deck that doesn't have a better celestial option.

You want enough holdings so that you can buy holdings turn 1 and 2, then turn 3+ is all about personalities. Running 20 holdings, 3 event/region, and 17 personalities makes it very likely that you won't get personalities to buy when you need them. Adding Peace to your fateside helps with this as well.

Very much yes for Hotako. 1x Qalyar is kind of silly, maybe look at unaligned uniques or uniques of other clans to see if you can fit something in. Daigotsu Gyoken xp2 is kind of pricy but the attachment recursion can be nice. Maybe Bayushi Kahoko xp? Aroru xp2?
