At least Labour managed to stop their MPs from doing or saying something stupid just as they start to get some hits on the government...

Of course I am sure that will change once the leadership election is over.

Forestry workers are often independent contractors (or employed through several layers of contracting companies, leaving no one to take liability when poo poo goes wrong) so didn't get things like breaks or a safe work environment before. Nurses and ATC have a fairly good union backing them so should still keep their breaks. But people in the hospitality and retail sectors which often lack union protection will be truly hosed.
But Hry Mike Hosking says he doesn't need a break so everything will be ok.

my understanding re contractors is that they were entitled to the mandatory breaks after the 2008 law passed, and unlike after this last change couldn't be bargained away?

the bill is also aimed to push individual contracts afaik, so that new workers in traditionally unionised jobs don't join the union and don't get the old benefits.

I think if you were getting a paid lunch then you were pretty lucky

For employers to walk away from collective bargaining they have to demonstrate they've acted in good faith. So basically in the next 15 years there's going to be some big court case and a judge will dictate what the conditions of acting in good faith are.

What makes me so mad about legislation such as this is that it shifts the baseline of the employer-employee relationship back.

Put simply, there will now be thousands of people getting their first job who, when presented with a new contract with no tea/smoko breaks won't even bat an eyelid - its all they know. You can't blame them for not knowing the historical details of employee rights at 16 or 17 or 18. When poo poo like this gets normalized (a.k.a a generation of new workers grow up working with no break) we distance ourselves further from the idea that you are NOT some kind of machine but a HUMAN BEING who deserves basic things like breaks and tea and smokes. Class consciousness is a thing guys!!!!!!

Can't pay your rent? Afford groceries? My ignorance of the Consumer Price Index is to blame? That sounds mighty 90-day to me!

Not to worry, though, here's a solution: I'll set up a sort of micro-supermarket for all my employees! You'll get special rates! Sort of like a, well, like a company store!

Since you don't have any breaks (remember we discussed this and I'm giving them to you later. All the other employees like it because it gives them flexibility) then obviously no you can't just leave your job to go to the toilet. It's only a 6 hour shift and frankly you should be fine to hold on that long.

So over the weekend WhaleOil put up a long rambling post about how the Machiavellian masterminds of the left are plotting to kill him. Apparently his hacked emails and Hager's book re all part of a larger plot which included Hamas firing poorly aimed rockets at him in Tel Aviv and the voices inside his head telling him to kill himself. Of course it all ended with a statement that to make it right all the readers had to do was pay for his upcoming defence of the Human Rights Commission court case (and the probable fine if found guilty). So has he lost it and about to break? or is he just getting desperate for cash now that he is damaged gods and isn't being paid as well by his former clients?

Cameron Slater has spent a decent part of the last 15 years on the health & disabilities benefit, I think he legit struggles with depression and this recent poo poo certainly won't have helped with that. Makes it all the more galling the way he cracks on beneficiaries.

It gets worse. Apparently the account details they posted for his donation drive was actually the trust account for one of the lawyers dealing with his case. He posted it without consulting with them. They have asked that he not use their account for a public begging session. I guess because having multiple small amounts come in from multiple unidentified sources for one client causes them no end of issues in sorting it all out and possible some cost in transaction fees etc.
Of course this is further evidence of the vast conspiracy out to get poor innocent Whale.

Also:
