Well the I Spit on your Grave posters are....striking. As for Dark Knight Rises I really like the building poster. Great use of perspective and imagery. Actually all the posters for the Batman films have been great. Really topnotch stuff.

TheJoker138 posted:Because movies don't really have fans yet when they're still in the stage where they would have theatrical posters, maybe? Unless it was for a rerelease or something. Movies with built in fanbases (ie every superhero movie) as well as stuff like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings where there was an existing fanbase before the (new) movies were released.

TheJoker138 posted:Anyone who was a fan of any of those before they released was stupid. Sure, you might get something awesome like LOTR, but for every LOTR there's something that turns out like Batman & Robin. Being a fan of the franchise the movie is based on is fine, but being a fan of the movie itself before it releases is a dumb thing to do. True enough but studios depend on fanbases, and it helps get stuff made. A studio is more likely to produce a movie they know people would be eager to see than something new/different. Sometimes it backfires (Batman and Robin, Green Lantern etc) but they still know that there are comic book fans out there that will see movies with the characters no matter how bad the film is.

Liar posted:Has this cartoonish mockery of a poster made it in the thread yet? The poster makes me want to shout "look out guys, there are planes that are about to crash into you". I blame this on the Hollywood trope of having people walk away in slow motion while something blows up behind them.

Maarak posted:This was the original poster: While this is an amazing poster (something I would hang up on my wall even) I am not sure if it goes with the film. That poster makes it look like balls to the wall war pulp action, while the movie itself seems like a muddled up Remember the Titans during World War II. I think a movie based on the Tuskagee Airmen is a worthy topic but I just don't trust a George Lucas movie to deliver on a movie about the Tuskagee Airmen. Honestly, seeing that poster makes me think that Red Tails is closer to Inglorious Basterds than anything else.

The vibe I get from those Expecting posters is that the film makers are trying to make a raunchy "chick-flick" with posters aimed at getting males to see the films (ie the quotes about racks and being horny). It seem's a bit like pandering but not any more than other posters. I just hope it isn't raunchy for raunchy sake (pretty much saying Bridesmaids made a poo poo ton of money so lets do that again). Comedy option: Here is a pandering poster done right: (I own this one and am drat proud of it)

Just want to chime in on the Crow. The stuff takes a huge nose dive in quality with each sequal. The first one I love (nostalgia and whatnot) but it does have it's issues (namely Sarah who is just loving annoying). However, there are some really awesome bad rear end scenes in it, and seeing how Lee takes out each henchman is awesome. The thing that really makes the movie though is that despite it's sleekness it is still rough around the edges. The colours aren't just black but red in the background too. That kind of thing. Each movie afterwards just sucks. They try to get more angsty, more edgy and more stupid. Then there is the TV show which was exactly like the first movie except for the whole Crow murders the people who wronged him thing (so it was pretty much the movie without the edginess and badassness and it was filmed in Vancover).

There was no real reason for her to be topless and it added nothing to the movie. Still, I loved that scene a lot.

What's a nice touch is they tell you that the tone of the movie is a lot different than the first one. I am still amazed by Gremlins 2 for being pretty much a parody of the first one without tarnishing the first one at all. Both movies are great a the individual level.

Robert Denby posted:It's time again to look at how posters can get increasingly worse as the movie gets closer to release. Let's look at "Apart" for today's example! What I find amusing about these is that you can see the demographic shift in who the posters appeal to. The first two seem rather artsy, possibly aimed at young 20 something year olds. The third one looks like it is aimed at the YA market (ie 15 year girls). It really looks like they are two different movies aimed at two different demographics.

You can see this a lot in bookstores and whatnot. Sometimes it is even more subtle than this. I remember when Twilight was a big thing new editions of Wuthering Heights came out with covers mimicing the Twilight covers (I am pretty sure they had a sticker on the cover saying something about Twilight as well).
