Osunaarashi will return on Day 10, I guess to try to eliminate any doubt of a drop into Juryo.

I think people are wise to Ichinojo now, we'll see how he does in the lower ranks for the final 3rd. Day 10 its: Hakuho - Aoiyama Terunofuji - Kakuryu Harumafuji - Kisenosato Aoiyama has been very unAoiyama like this basho, failing to fall on his face even once. I think he can pull some upset but against Hakuho I dunno. Harumafuji is a match behind Kisenosato but Harumafuji has been looking solid after his slow start and Kisenosato has lucked into a few wins here. It's funny how vested we get with Aoiyama, even though I truly give no fucks how all that gelatinous mass of acne and man titties does in the end. It's like watching a train wreck, really. Yet one that somehow has snuck into sanyaku. Speaking of Fat Fucks Falling on their Faces, I haven't heard about Gagamaru in a while. He still in juryo? Kakuryu is quickly becoming what Harumafuji should have been.

He's fattin' around Juryo against some pretty weak opposition. I doubt we'll see him again.

Day 10: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t12jahM_Fgo Quite a few good tsuppari brawls today. I approve. First time I've seen an amiuchi. Or an okuritaoshi. Holy poo poo, Ichinojo sent the gyoji flying there. Kisenosato knows he hosed up that tachiai.

And none of them involved Aoiyama or Shohozan, funny enough. Pretty sure I've never seen amiuchi either, but seems like we'll see a half dozen or so okuritaoshi a year. According to sumodb, Toyonoshima did it to Jokoryu in July, Arawashi to Chiyomaru in May, and Hakuho to Endo in March.

Good day's sumo that I especially enjoyed the Shohozan-Amuru scrap. Getting a bit worried about Geoido retaining Ozeki status if he doesn't step up soon. Also Tochinoshin owns owns owns

In trying to smooth out the lower frame rate of today's video, I set the YouTube speed setting to x2 speed. I've discovered this makes watching sumo 10x better for the sheer comical value. When the gyoji starts going "NOKOTTANOKOTTANOKOTTANOKOTTANOKOTTANOKOTTA" like a chipmunk, it's great.

Kyoku and Tochi are both kachi-kochi, so I'm all for pushing the goon back up top where he belongs after a hell of a comeback. I had also forgotten how massive Tochi's legs are. How does ever lose a yorikiri battle? Kibner posted:Kotooshu was handing out sumo calendars at the arena today. He's really drat tall, y'all. 6'8" is massive even if you're a beanpole. I'm 100% sure Kotooshu was one of the two popular targets for women before Endo came along. In general he was super popular with the native fans. If you watch the NHK broadcast he ends up in front of the camera a lot still.

Yeah, he lost a lot of weight. He now just looks like a guy who works out a bit. Women were not afraid to approach him 1v1 and just have a casual conversation with him. The crowd was really sparse until about halfway through the Juryo(sp?) matches. The Harumafuji match didn't have any sponsors. The Kakuryu match had a sumo manga as one of the sponsors. Apparently, it is a recent release and is very popular.

Ask and ye shall receive. Also Harumafuji doesn't have any kensho because all the reports had him being absent for the whole basho and then he suddenly showed up on the first day, so nobody put in sponsorship of his matches because they thought he wouldn't be there.

Pretty disappointed that Goeido is kadoban by virtue of a Yokozuna henka, but he's underperformed all basho, so it would've probably happened anyway. Tochinoshin is showing the value of morale, I think. He's back in the top division having comfortably won 4 tournaments on his way. There's also inexperienced opponents: his two losses came against guys who've fought him 10+ times before, most of the rest have never faced him before (or not in 7 years, in the case of Sokokurai). It's still super impressive that he's 10-2 after more than a year away from Makuuchi

Won 9 out of the last 11 bashos while only dropping 15 matches. That's pretty loving crazy- but he actually has done it before back in 2010-2011 while only losing 13 bouts. The third from last match on the final day of the tournament (also called the senshuraku) is always awarded the two arrows with the kenshokin envelopes. The second to the last match's winner is given a bowstring and the final match's winner is given a bow. This all goes back to when the Emperor would award a bow and arrows to the winner of his personal tournament. Supposedly, one time the winner of the tournament did some fancy twirling of the bow. This led to the bow (albeit string-less) ceremony that gets performed by the yumitorishiki, who is now the stand-in for reception of the bow on the final day.

Encouraging everyone to sign up for the next round of Guess the Banzuke. The very simple premise is you fill out what you think the next Banzuke for makuuchi will look like. Its kind of like a bizarro fantasy sumo except it comes down to understanding how they will place the wrestlers in the standings. Also the website is very geocities which gains it some points. Here's last basho results and rules of the game: http://www.dichne.com/Guess.htm Here's the entry form: http://sumodb.sumogames.de/gtb/GTBEntry.aspx

Also chirping to say that many of the sumo games are quite fun. Sumo Game http://www.japanguide.info/sumo/ Pick 10 winners every day, face off against another player. The player with more correct guesses wins the match. Try to make kachi-koshi and move up the banzuke. Bench Sumo http://members.sumogames.de/ Select 10 Rikishi prior to the start of the basho to form your team. Every day face off against another players team. You rank your team on the likeliness of a particular wrestler winning that day, with only the top 5 wrestlers "starting" for your team (the remaining 5 make up the bench). The higher ranked you have them the more points they may potentially score for a win. The team with the most points wins for the day. There are many others, but those are two of the more popular. The site that bench sumo runs off has several other games. You can also check out Fantasy Sumo at http://www.sumotalk.com/, where you pick several wrestlers from different rank brackets at the beginning of the Basho, and receive points for any wins, special prizes, or yushos.
