I've got a small orange gopher* that I can lend to the world party, and I'd like to shoot some other people's gophers as well.

As a gopher note, I haven't had particularly good luck with birdshot on the duraseal material, as the shot gets embedded about 1/4" into the material and it heals around it, throwing off its balance, and I've had to pull the weight further down to get around it

*well-abused

Bird shot is better at a longer distance. I have shot my trio with it and it just makes them all wave back and wobble. A friend not knowing the difference between buck and bird shells is how my stand got messed up so be careful if you are using a shotgun. However they did take a slug to the face at close range without flinching.

Like, as in far enough so that the shot doesnt penetrate?

Also, taking a slug without a lot of damage?

Yeah. It was out at rifle range and we would make them do the wave with birdshot. Any that penetrated would just be on the surface and could be shaken off. I think it did so well with the slugs because the gopher is free to move so it just rolls with the hits. They really do take a lot of abuse. I just need to build a new stand and get three colors of paint for my trio.

So the slugs don't even penetrate, and they just bounce off as the gopher gets pushed out of the way?

Excellent!

Be forewarned that there is still a lot of birdshot embedded in it, so hang the weight as low as you can on the little bottom tab, to counterbalance the extra weight. I had to dig some 22lr out of it that entered at a real steep angle and stopped inside because it wasn't standing up the whole way (it wasn't fun).
