The problem with Old World OF implementations... well, one of many... is that they default to a serial console on initialization, so you have to have another computer hooked up to the modem port with a null modem cable in order to interact with it. That said, I futzed around with OF a lot on my 7300, ever going so far as to learn Forth so I could try to get Linux to boot reliably on it. It's a lot nicer on my G5 where OF actually works. thelightguy fucked around with this message at Feb 9, 2012 around 06:43 |

Me and my dad used to go to government auctions and buy old Apple stuff to sell on the internet. I have tons of this poo poo that all works that we've collected over the years. * II+ * IIe dual disk drive and monitor * IIc with monitor and stand * Woz IIgs * ROM 03 IIgs with 4MB RAM card * 512K Mac that doesn't work * IIsi, IIci, IIfx * A few Color Classics and SE/30s * LC, LC II, LC III with Apple II card and cable * A few LC 500s * LC 630 with maxed out RAM and a 486DX/66 card * Assorted 5000s, 6000s, 7000s * Some of those educational all-in-ones * Power Mac 8600/250 * 9600/350 with the easy-open case * Assorted PowerBook Duos and a few DuoDocks * Some iBook G3s * A G4 cube running OS X * A few Newton eMates * All sorts of random mid '90s Apple accessories like digital cameras, remote controls, Laserdisc interfaces and junk * Boxes and boxes of PDS ethernet cards I've also got boxes of software including Hypercard, Clarisworks, all sorts of poo poo. I've also got some Sun hardware and the end table in my room is an HP 3000XE. Luigi Thirty fucked around with this message at Feb 9, 2012 around 07:02 |

poo poo, I guess I shouldn't have given up on the open firmware wikipedia article after just the first paragraph when I was originally searching haha. Thanks for the explanation! the command-shift-o-f combo doesn't seem to do anything on boot though, it just happily keeps booting into the OS. Looks like it is probably looking for input on the serial port. That is annoying

Some pre-New World Macs can display OF on their main monitor, but I don't think it's very many. Certainly, my Power Computing clone can't. A 9500 might even be able to run Rhapsody which would be a really interesting experience. A null modem cable for a serial terminal isn't too bad to put together (mini-din-8 is basically RS232). If it's a green motherboard it's probably a production candidate (for FCC/user acceptance) so it should be very close to the production model. Most prototypes have different coloured motherboards (usually red) and possibly a different coloured case.

The beige G3 is new-world I believe, or it's a weird hybrid. I know my beige G3, Powerbook G4 (forgot to mention that one in my first post), B&W G3, G4 Cube use the integrated video. Also forgot to mention that you can simply use Apple System Profiler if it's installed to dump a report about what hardware is inside the machine. Perhaps that will give you more clues as to which enablers/extensions (if any) you need to make ethernet work. Has anyone here seen a PowerCD in person? They seem like the holy grail of "not Jobs" Apple collections next to the TAM, but I didn't see them in stores even when they were new - special ordered only.

I worked with some people ages ago to hook it up to their PowerBooks, back in the days when they didn't have integrated CD/DVD drives. It had only a SCSI port and I think an S-video port, and I remember the lid flipped open towards you and it looked ungainly when loading CDs. It did have the capability to run on 6 AA batteries if necessary (no one I knew ever did this, they always used the AC wall wart) and it could display pictures from PhotoCDs if hooked to a TV, and I believe it could also play some VideoCDs. I also remember back in the OS 7/8/and especially 9 days I was always looking for the latest versions of the "Ethernet (Built-in)" extension because it'd always get updated with newer machines and for the most part was backwards-compatible with older machines. Ditto for "Mac OS ROM" files later on.

Other than anemic levels of horsepower/RAM by current standards, the first dual-USB G3s are pretty awesome actually. Practically silent little fanless things. They have fairtly low power draw (for something that isn't meant to be a crazy plug computer etc) - 3w while sleeping, as high as 20 while booting (might have been off CD no less, don't recall).

Oh man, the stuff I've owned over the years: IIsi LC630 <-- This + word 6 == best essay machine. Was even better with a full 68040 upgrade that was plucked from a Quadra 950. 7100 7200 7500 Beige G3 B&W G3 Sawtooth G4 Most of this stuff was picked up when my school was about to pitch it, so I was always 5 years behind the curve. The best part about owning those old machines was upgrading them with somewhat questionable PC hardware, just to get the Somewhere, I even have a Newton MP 2000 that was bought off of e-bay for $100. Rant: The "Platinum" Beige G3 case was the best ever. If that design were opened to PC manufacturers, I would buy one today. Also, Mac OS classic ended at 8.6. OS 9 never happened. krooj fucked around with this message at Feb 11, 2012 around 15:53 |

So is there a way to share my internet connection to my powerbook 180, via a usb-serial adapter and a fake dialup connection on the powerbook ppp connection? I've read up on pppd on macosx, but not sure how to set it up. No real use, just want to explore the possibility. I used to have a localtalk to ethernet adapter that I used before I moved, but it magically disappeared.

Check out local resale shops, Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc. A lot depends on the location, the philosophy of the store and other factors - but it's worth a look-see if you have any place like that near you. (About 10-12 years ago, Goodwill in Indianapolis used to be a great resource. The Detroit area, not so much.)

The changes to 8.1 are quite irrelevant from 7.6.1 in a 2012 perspective. In both cases you'll be running a 15 years old plus outdated OS, so the smoothest the better in my opinion. Also by 1998, PowerPC was the standard with Macs, so I don't know how well a 33MHz 68040 will fare.

I'd probably stick with System 7.x. If you're worried about HFS+ being stupid and inefficient, partition your disk into two 2GB chunks.

I'm pretty sure 68k macs can't boot off of HFS+ partitions anyway, so you'll have to split the drive if you want to boot from it.

This isn't hardware but I figured it sort of fit the theme of the thread. I bought a still-shrinkwrapped copy of Marathon on 3.5" floppy off eBay just the other day.
