Thibault Jaurès It's a good thing Thibault puts Sophia's ego back to sleep. The sights of her mutated morphs fighting over a scrap of human flesh is enough to rattle her fellow citizen, despite his desperate attempt to shut down any emotive response. Mentally, Thibault hits the big red button, and chemicals race through his system. He feels time slow down and his feelings die down, turning the terror and thrill of combat into a proper, measured experience. Maybe his hands would stop shaking, too. Rani Kaur Rani opens up, unleashing a withering hail of gunfire from both pistols at one of the Not-Sophias. The first blast easily penetrates whatever armor NS1 has with the second burst finishing the job, the several limbed monster instantly ripped apart as the biter rounds break apart on impact, shredding it to a near mist. With one Sophia down, Rani turns her sights down to a second one, but switching targets so fast is enough to throw her aim off. Attack and Damage, pistol 1. DC 75, AP-2: 2#1d100 22 41 2#4d10+2 40 33 +5 to the second attack due to an excellent success. 78 damage to the first Not-Sophia, with 40 bypassing all armor, and the other 38 having -2AP. So uh. That's a thing. Also it says pistol 1 but I misread something - change that to both pistols' first burst fire. Attack and Damage, pistol 2. DC 75, AP-2: 2#1d100 96 69 2#4d10+2 22 28 Should be vs 55, not 75. Two misses

Oh my goodness! With a Fray of 80 (40 against ranged) it can only dodge the first shot. And... failed! The first Sophia is shredded as it leaps into the tunnel mouth, but the other two are fine! They grab onto loops and hurl themselves towards Rani in a flurry of hands, like their limbs are made for racing through microgravity environments. They're a little far to do anything in this Action Phase, but they will almost certainly reach and tear at Rani next round unless something is done. It's a good thing Rani's first combat put her at an advantage! quote:Rani

Stan Stan look around for a maintenance duct; hopefully they can crawl through without being noticed and come out behind the psycho biomorphs, so they can launch a surprise attack with their Eelware. Looking for a duct ... hopefully Stan can find one without a Perception roll, but just in case, their Perception is 70. They also have Interest: Logos Blueprints at 50 if that helps. Rolling ... 57. Of course, if there's no hatch to be found, disregard the following. The tiny crickets activate their Chameleon Skin so the biomorphs don't see them zip into the hatch, then creep carefully on their little feet to a hatch behind their assailants' backs. Infiltration 55 (plus specialty Sneaking = 65). Rolling ... 40. Woo! I'll assume crawling down the duct will take a few turns, so Stan will have to wait before they can zoom out and Eelware those horrors. Meanwhile, a subcommittee of the Collective (read: Multitasking fork) is busy programming their Injector nanobots to start pumping the biomorphs full of Twitch. They tell the hive to keep the Injectors coming, targeting first the nearest enemy biomorph, then the next nearest, and so on until they're all down and drumming their heels on the bulkheads. Programming: Nanoswarm (90 with the speciality). Rolling ... 63. Hopefully they don't all have medichines or whatever. ps - Sorry about the lack of colour in the last few posts, I haven't had much time lately on account of poo poo hit the fan at work. Hopefully it'll have calmed down in the next week or so.

Stan climbs into a duct as his nanoswarm heads for the Sophias roaring through the tunnel mouth! Both he and the swarm should be in a position to attack next turn. Meanwhile, those with enhanced vision see EYE's lasers pulse into another Sophia, vaporising a hole in its torso and blowing an arm off. Blood goes everywhere and it screams in pain and rage; it's not down yet, but it will be soon. "Sophia" makes a Fray Test against the one attack it can dodge... and fails! It takes the full force of both attacks and suffers 3 Wounds, though it's able to ignore the first thanks to Endocrine Control. -20 to all its actions! Also I rolled the Knockdown Test but it passed, oh well. The Joaninhas pull themselves across the module with their arms, legs raised and vibroblades humming in anticipation. This fight is less than a turn away from a quick primer on making attacks to one on taking them. quote:Rani

Sashimi Joe Joe uses his free tentacles to push off the nearest wall, aiming for the 'roof' of the tunnel to get a clear line of fire over Rani's head and get all three-dimensional on these things. He focuses on the attackers, counting on his free tentacles to find a secure grab-hold when he hits the far side of the tunnel. As soon as he has a clear shot, he opens up with his SMGs on the closest intact exSophia, pumping rounds into it. While the first flails and dies, Joe switches targets to fire on the one EYE wounded, but misjudges its trajectory and opens fire early. Using short bursts, +10 to hit instead of damage bonus. Forgot to include my smartlink bonus initially and also the penalty for switching targets on the second set of bursts. I blame my lovely connection making me punchy. Thibault Jaurès Thibault pushes his revulsion aside for the moment, submerging it in a wash of artificial hormones and combat drugs. He lets his training take over and settles into the rhythm of the fight. The neo-avian sidesteps, clearing his line of sight. He draws a bead on one of the armed Joaninhas, but his trembling skews his first shot wide. Thibault tracks the beam back down, wounding the appalling creature. Quick action to aim Semi-auto burst in lethal mode, Beam weapons vs (Smartlink, aim, medium range) 70, 75, failure; sweeping fire on second attack Beam Weapons vs (Smartlink, aim, medium range, sweep) 80, 73, barely hits, 16 damage. Well, that's certainly a lot of crits and excellent successes. By the way, an Excellent Success (30+) gives you +5 damage, and a MoS of 60+ increases it to +10, so I think Thibault just did 26 damage! It probably won't matter in a minute though. Nice first fight, guys. Sashimi Joe's SMGs shred the last Sophia. As it screams and thrashes in its death throes, his second burst hits EYE's target as it reels from his wounds. It flails wildly before passing out, its dying body drifting into a wall. As the Joaninhas pour into the bottleneck, Thibault's pulser bites into one of them and blows a hole in its side. It howls, but apparently it's the lucky one - Alice turns her plasma rifle on the other and holds the button down, and a stream of nova-hot plasma smashes through its torso and melts it, leaving behind two pairs of legs and a ruined body. And... it's time for the second Action Phase! Which is probably just going to be Rani finishing the last one. Ettin fucked around with this message at Feb 20, 2012 around 01:15 |

The last Joaninha goes down, leaving you with some nice corpses to pick over and a Comms module to explore!![]() I am kind of unhappy with this map - it's a 2D map of a 3D space and the scale's off - but it'll have to do! Also: Stan ended up being foiled by crits, but he can continue scuttling around ducts and things and get the drop on the next enemy in advance! According to your map, this sphere is divided into quadrants. To your left should be the comms center and its radio boosters, farcasters, egocasters and other equipment, plus some hardwired data storage where research notes and other data should be backed up. To your right is mostly unused module space, though peering down the tunnel to your right you can see someone has blasted a door open. Up ahead lies a computer lab and some associated rooms, and a section marked on the maps you were given as space from a previous experiment which hasn't been cleared up yet. There are no lights here, but the life support works so the power can't be completely dead. Floatways to the Medical Bay, Laboratory and Habitation are accessible.

[18:51:55 LST] Sashimi Joe and Alice The doors to the computer labs and mainframe swish open as you float towards them. Easy! The computer lab looks more like an oversized habitation cabin, on first glance. One outer corner of the dark room contains a sleeping sack, a storage locker and a desktop CM, and someone has thrown up AR posters of various inner system animated shows on the walls (which can also provide you with pirated episodes, if you'd like to ignore the mission to watch some shōnen!). The nearby walls are filled with systems racks, mesh node hardware, maintenance tools and backup electronics - quite a lot of the storage racks and even a couple mesh nodes are empty, suggesting most of the hardware has been ganked. On the far side of the room is a wide array of screens above an honest-to-goodness physical keyboard set into a wall panel. The screens are off, but you can hear the faint hum of active computer equipment in the mainframe room. The mainframe room itself is packed wall-to-wall with more hardware, all clearly still operational and functioning - in fact, someone has been hard at work securing and hooking up the backup equipment and mesh nodes in a big lump on the inner wall, trying to jury-rig some extra computational power. God knows what's going on in here. Stan and EYE Part of the data storage room is actually a squash court. You are starting to suspect that whoever was in charge of information technology here was not taking their duties seriously. Beyond the court are a few comfortable seating pods, some ectos, and a hardwired data storage unit. Most of the space it takes up is due to the advanced composite that encases it, for protection in case the habitat explodes or something. Whoever tried to access it last didn't have the right access codes, knowledge of infosec or the keys to the composite box; the ecto hooked up to it is currently blaring some lovely dance video that appears to be sped-up clips from a hentai with strobe lighting added and the words "NICE TRY FUCKER" flashing on top in at least six different languages. That's a little something called dedication. Whoever last saw that did not take it well; the box is covered in claw, bullet and plasma marks and someone has tried to pry the lid open with little success. The comms lie beyond. Windows allow for an impressive view of Neptune and the communication arrays on the outside of this module; from here it looks like someone has been lashing extra equipment to it with cables, but it looks as dead as it was when Stan passed by earlier. The innermost room is full of maintenance equipment and spare parts - much of it probably incorporated into the new modifications you're seeing - while the outer rooms contain arrays of hardware, screens and ectos dedicated to habitat maintenance (currently disabled via what Sashimi Joe calls "extreme hard shutdown" and everyone else calls "shooting the poo poo out of it), some faint scratching noises coming from a storage locker someone has welded completely shut, and the communications array. The area dedicated to comms is a mess. An empty seating pod floats in front of a nice window that doubles as a screen, surrounded by keyboards and sensors and screens; a lot of it has been intentionally destroyed, with unplugged cables and slashed wires floating out of open cupboards and the debris of smashed screens and ripped-out drives floating across the room. A few pathetic lights and error messages here and there suggest that the destruction wasn't total and this can be salvaged, but boy someone really tried. Rani and Thibault The data you received suggests this module was used in a scientific visualisation AGI experiment on another, smaller habitat before being connected to this one. The door has been blown open, and shining a light in there reveals a small maze of partitioned rooms hosting computer equipment - very outdated equipment, the future equivalent of going to your grandparents' house and finding out they still use Windows 95 or, worse, IE8. The initial rooms have been partially looted, though - if the group is sharing their visual feeds with everyone else, Sashimi Joe might recognise some of it in the mainframe room. A brief search of the nearest rooms also turns up synth bodies. Someone has ripped these poor synths apart, stolen their arms, and thrown the remaining pieces in here. You'd guess about four synths worth of robot, judging by the number of torsos and heads in here. You can press deeper if you like. I just thought you'd like to know that. Thibault and Rani Pushing ahead! The rest of the space is full of small rooms and narrow corridors, but with the maps you don't get lost. There's very little back here save more obsolete electronics, some of it stripped out - the usual Logos policy is to take this junk back to a fabber and recycle the resources, so Thibault figures this place was being treated like some kind of electronics piggy bank. If he secured Manufacturing he could make a few things if he didn't mind waiting. As they search the back, Rani finds something interesting: one of the smaller rooms deep in the back appears to be missing entirely. Where she expects a rounded opening, she only finds an empty patch of wall with a very faint hint of seam. Thibault's t-ray emitter can't penetrate the walls, but he's able to work out the presence of a thin door disguised as a fake wall. When Rani tries, it swings open easily. The room inside has been retrofitted into a secret hideout. Another sleeping sack surrounded by more recent electronics hangs from the far wall, and someone even installed a desktop CM and a zero-g toilet. It's been used recently, and left in a mess - empty coffee bulbs, food wrappers, clothes and personal possessions are floating everywhere. A holographic projector and a disposable ecto have been left behind. Rani doesn't see any signs of violence. A lock bolted to the wall can hold the fake door closed, but it's been left ajar. Alice and Sashimi Joe According to the notes you were forwarded, the computer lab was being used to generate and evolve advanced scientific languages, via hordes of linguistic AIs in the mainframe next door. Alice finds herself looking at the customised interface used to generate and track them - it's currently unlocked, so at least she doesn't have to break into it. A quick glance suggests that the systems are currently working through more linguistics conundrums. If she's reading this right, though, there's only one active AI in there. Meanwhile, Sashimi Joe is impressed - the modifications were clearly made by someone who didn't have all the right tools knew what they were doing. Everything's been hooked up in just the right spot to give the mainframe a big chunk of computing power and AI capacity, with not a cable out of place. Doing this by hand must have been a lot of work. Joe could probably disconnect it if he wanted to. EYE and Stan EYE can easily reset the system, returning him to the login prompt. It looks like the last user was trying to hack their way in, but their attempts triggered this disco tentacle party instead. The storage locker is made of cheap metals and not that thick - Stan can peer through it and make out some kind of small robot in there, he thinks, and EYE could easily break it open with brute force or the application of light explosives without harming the occupant. There are no openings - they've all been sealed too, for some reason - but Stan hears a voice issuing from within: "Hello? Anyone out there? Heeeelp!"

Rani and Thibault Running fingerprints through image recognition software equipment is confirmed to have been used by two people lately: Suzume and Sophia. Roselle alerts Thibault to one particular file, the first his muse finds, named IF_SOMEONE_FINDS_THIS. Looks like someone left a message! Aside from that, Thibault finds the projector loaded with movies and images. The files are organised in a way that probably only makes sense to Suzume, but alongside a massive amount of bootleg inner system anime he finds a series of clips pulled from the habitat's cameras before the network was messed with. They have been watched a few times and might shed light on what happened here; the thumbnails of Sophia-mutants and vague shapes of other humanoids suggest Thibault might want to brace himself first, though. Meanwhile, Rani looks through the ectos. Most of them are Suzume's - like many paranoid hackers, she favoured disposable ectos for security reasons. One is mostly full of research documents and backups of their research data, and another has been loaded with cracked and open-source software that might be useful. One of the ectos has been connected by cables to a mesh node in a shelving rack against the wall and appears to contain network backups, or something else science-y, and the most used one was used in here as a recording device. Without opening them, thumbnails indicate Suzume and Sophia were in this room too. Software! The following programs have been left behind by Suzume and can be shared by anyone Rani feels like: – Biometrics software for DNA matching, gait recognition, vocal recognition, iris/retina scans, fingerprint recognition if you feel image recognition doesn't cover that, and maybe other things if I notice I missed something later. There's been some confusion about whether the description means "you can get other versions of this program that do different things" or "this program also does this", so now you definitely have biometrics software for everything! - Skillsofts for Academics: Paleoastronomy, Interests: Jovian Politics, and Art: Freestyle Rap, useable by anyone with skillware implants - Relationship mapping software (Panopticon p. 156). Suzume has customised it to target the Ω-net, but it works like standard mapping software otherwise. Alice Oh hi there crit! Reimu determines it is hardwired to the mainframe, which is good - mainframes and similar computing systems are considered dangerous, since they could potentially house a seed AI, and you definitely wouldn't want that running amok. Reimu reports that though the mainframe itself is hardwired only, the console and the rest of the computer lab can be accessed wirelessly (aside from data corruption, the mesh seems fine too.) It needs authentication, but Reimu uses the logged-in console to grant Alice her own login because she's great like that. Reimu has something else to tell Alice, too, and she brings the relevant windows to Alice's attention. First, the linguistics AIs are all dormant in storage. Second, the current active "AI" is 5-Formyltetrahydrofolate Cyclo-Ligase, and he is taking up all the mainframe's spare processing power. Third, he is sending Reimu (and Alice) a message. > Hello.

Thibault Jaurès Thibault shrugs and opens the message. What's the worst that could happen? After his reading session, Thibault will watch the video files, stress be damned. I'll gladly take a copy of the biometrics and relation-map software, too.
