So, in case anyone was wondering, England beating Spain and Sweden was "underwhelming". England losing at home to Holland is "promising". I'm going to wear an Argentina shirt all summer.

Well if you look at it in context it was. The manager just quit and there was a temporary manager in place who picked a really young side that played pretty well overall versus the WC runners up. It'd be interesting if Glen Johnson was given a run on the right of midfield. Micah Richards behind him would make up for his typical lapses in concentration while freeing him up offensively. He's the type of wide option that can beat his man and deliver a consistent cross that England will need when the middle of the pitch is being conceded, which is going to happen against the toughest competition. He is capable of more than just hugging the touchline, of course, as he enjoys cutting in from the right and shooting with his "weak" left.

He's a fantastic attacking option and has been one of our best attackers at Liverpool this season (against some very poor competition admittedly). The typical dismissal for this is that he's best attacking when he has space to move into from further back, rather than being closed down quickly by a fullback, but I'd say it's worth a try.

It doesn't always work as well as you might think. Most full backs are used to receiving the ball without any pressure on them, because they're either sat deep to receive it or they've made an overlapping run into space. It can be quite unsettling to then play with an opposing full back always closing them down as they pick the ball up, and then being up against a proper full back instead of against the opposing winger tracking them, who will naturally not be as good defensively. I'm not saying it can't work but I think we're past the point where we have time to experiment with it and find out. If he'd been played on the wing for Liverpool occasionally it would be different. Otherwise it would be a fairly desperate measure, if we need to shore up the right flank I think it would be better to just put Milner there.

I'd like to see Milner take on the Barry role and anchor the midfield, he's got the energy to play there and if he could work on not getting booked all the time it'd leave a space for players like Wilshere to play towards the front. Playing Glen Johnson as a midfielder would be a waste, it's not a position where that kind of move is needed.

Sturridge is not international-level on the right wing, unfortunately. He's good there for Chelsea but doesn't track back nearly enough for the more rigid, defensive game of national sides. While it's true that England need to emulate Spain and Germany more and breed young Xavis and Özils, right now, with the players available, the correct choice is clearly a workmanlike 4-3-3 with three central midfielders of which one is allowed forward, two wingers who put in a shift defensively and a fast striker who can defend from the front. Focus on keeping clean sheets and controlling the midfield. The goals will come like they do for all other international sides: through sheer dumb luck and set pieces. Maybe throw in a counter-attack goal or two since you'll have the Welbeck - Rooney - Young trifecta. It'll be like Greece only with better (note: not actually much better) players.

I mean look at Holland in the World Cup final. For all the criticism of their negative playstyle, they were one complete self-embarassment from the Dutch Charlie Adam away from winning the prettiest trophy in the world against a decidedly superior side. England can play expansive, pretty football to beat Ukraine and Sweden, but they need to accept that Germany will only be beaten through repeated corners aimed at John Terrys ugly mug.
