I'd forgotten how weird those live action tv shows at the start of the game were. When I first played the game I had no idea about them so I was totally through them. Awesome little addition.

Looking forward to replaying this game, in spite of its faults it was still a great game.

I accidentally hit the left analog stick during that part yesterday and got static. I was like "Woah, what the hell?" I hit it again and found out I could cycle through commercials. I had never known you could do that the first 10 or so times I played through this game.

Oh, Kojima

It's been a couple of years since I last finished the game but drat, at its best it's still such a blast to play. Not going for a speedrun, just trying for no kills and no alerts, but messing around with the soldiers and exploring every nook and cranny in the maps is a lot of fun. I'm also determined to get used to the over-the-shoulder aiming. Last time I found it too finicky and just went with auto-aim or first person aiming. So far so good though.

E: And going in guns blazing after getting caught (and before reloading a save) with "Calling to the Night" blaring on the iPod. It's no Snake Eater or Heavens Divide, but a great little ditty nonetheless.

The only thing that still bugs me about the over-the-shoulder aiming (and the controls, too) is the switch between left and right handed aiming when you press R3. I've been pressing R3 when aiming by mistake and it keeps switching on me, and that's pretty annoying when I'm trying to mow down a group of PMC soldiers in front of me.

The acceleration is what gets to me the most. It feels kind of unnatural (especially after playing something like Uncharted 3) and MGS4 does that in first person aiming mode too. Leading targets is particularly painful. And I like that R3 changes shoulders, it's easy to access and I haven't pressed it accidentally yet.

It's a Kojima product, so I'm leaning "yes". I'm frankly surprised the HD collection didn't require you to mail in a full-length thesis on the evolution of nuclear war throughout history for the platinum.

I've been playing Peace Walker, and so far the gameplay seems to be: Choose mission, neutralize enemies, fulton solders back to base, go to target, assign new recruits jobs, set R&D work, next mission.

I guess it just feels less like a stealth game and more like a Pokemon game. That being said, it is still fun.

I'm currently chasing the Nuke train to the tunnel right after rescuing Chico

No kidding. I don't remember sucking this much at it! I keep bumping into everything any everyone and getting my rear end killed!

Am I crazy or did MGS4 pretty much codify the "left trigger aim right trigger fire" thing in games? Not saying it invented it, and it was mostly an evolution of the popular Resident Evil 4 method, but even so.

None of these trophies say I need to do a Big Boss Emblem run but apparently you need to get all emblems to unlock all music? drat, going to need to get my game back in shape...

Im pretty sure Gears of War did it before that but even then several games im sure did that whole control scheme first. Its not really similar to Resident evil 4 since it only uses one analog stick when aiming.

...man. So we just had a minor earthquake right in the middle of when I was playing MGS4, during that first "Snake vs. Gekko" scene and I thought, "wow, the rumble on this controller is a lot stronger than I remember!"

Oh, and I think the only way you can make it through the rail fighting segments nonlethally is to use the Solar Gun--provided it's charged, of course. One hit anywhere with that thing knocks guys out, you have a lot of ammo and it fires fast.

Believe it or not yodon't even have to do charged shots with in during the chase. All the enemies have way lowered maximum health and stamina, so just turn on Auto aim and tap away. Alternatively, use the Twin Barrel with V-Rings. It's not as reliable, but it's better than having to do headshots with the traq gun.

E;f,b on the solar gun stuff.

Imagine if you had played MGS1 a decade earlier! That feeling was like tenfold for me, knowing the events of the first game had taken place there but getting there in MGS4 and seeing this frozen over abandoned facility with no humans in it, just unmanned enemies. It was so drat eerie the first time, and still is.

If I remember correctly MGS4 has the same sort of health recovery mechanic Snake Eater has in that if you leave the game alone for a day or so you'll have recovered health the next time you load up your save. So if your health has gone to poo poo try taking advantage of that mechanic.

It's a pretty inconsequential feature for most of the game but I remember it being a life saver when trying to get through that exact section a few years ago.

Can't do that during the chase in Act 3. Is also not always a viable option when you are doing an under 5 hours run.

So Kojima will be showing off the FOX Engine in a little over two weeks from now. I can't wait to see what it can do; considering it's Kojima we're talking about here and how nuts he is about detail. I remember before MGS4 came out he talked in length about how he wanted the world in MGS4 to feel alive, so much so that if you waited long enough, you could watch a tree grow in real time and characters' hair and facial hair would also grow with time. Hell, he probably would've coded in erosion if it'd been a possibility. But what kind of stuff will he be doing with the FOX Engine? I hope he goes all-out with detail and seeing as how it's possibly an open-world game, that level of detail would be really impressive.

E: Any EU PS3 owners turned off by the €9.99 price tag on MGS1? Well, it's just €4.99 now! No excuses, if you don't own it, get it.

No lie, it's just like how MGS3 was so cutting-edge it still looked better than a lot of the games that immediately followed it in the next generation. The HD release of MGS3 didn't even need to retexture anything, I think!

Revengeance was originally on the Fox engine, but since it's switched hands to Platinum it runs on the engine they've been using for their games.

It's kind of a shame they didn't make another game with the MGS4 engine. I've been playing through it again, as I assume most people have, and it still looks so nice. The amount of detail is kind of incredible and there are still only a handful of games that rival it in that department. But I would've liked to have seen how far they could've pushed it with another game. Still, the FOX engine sounds (and looks) pretty incredible so I can't complain.

The only thing I don't like about the MGS4 engine is the fire. It looks really bizarre.

Yes. I listened to them and they're pretty cool. They point out interesting things in the engine, or why they did X or Y and tell you how to play the level basically (But as far as I remember they're only in certain spots for certain parts of the levels.)
