(bear with me while I mess with this to fit more of the upcoming stuff)

The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is a re-release of Metal Gear Solid 2, 3 and Peace Walker for PS3, 360 and Vita. All three games have been updated to run at 60 FPS in 720p. All 3 games have trophies and achievements, and they even made the controls work on the 360 without pressure-sensitivity! All games include their updated versions, although some features have been removed. The game is currently out worldwide (except australia because god hates it), so you have almost no excuse not to be playing it right now!!

There's an IRC Channel to organize co-op stuff, head on over to #pwgoons on irc.synirc.net

The Games
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

Taking place in 2007 and 2009, this follows Snake as he works with his buddy Hal "Otacon" Emmerich in their quest to rid the world of Metal Gears once and for all! The game's totally about Snake, Trust me! I need scissors! 61!
The game is the Substance version, but they got rid of the Skateboarding because they're dicks.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

Set in 1964, this follows Naked Snake on his mission to rescue the Soviet scientist Nikolai Stepanovich Sokolov and destroy his creation, the Shagohod. It is the first MGS game chronologically, and it lets you eat like 80 billion animals.
The game is the Subsistance version with the updated camera controls () and re-releases of Metal Gear 1 and 2, although the Secret Theatre and Snake Vs. Monkey modes have been removed.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

Set 10 years after MGS3, this follows Snake and Miller as they prance around Central America with their organization Militaires Sans Frontiers, and end up having to stop the Peace Walker project. Originally on the PSP, this is the first Metal Gear Solid game to feature motherfucking co-op so you can shoot way too many tankssneak around the jungle with your friends!

Features

Everything runs at 720p, 60fps. Metal Gear Solid 3 doesn't slow to a crawl when you look the wrong way and you can actually loving see dudes. Peace Walker runs smoother and doesn't have a dumb filter over everything to hide the aliasing! MGS2 already ran at 60fps and looks pretty goddamn good at 720p.

Transfarring is Kojima's way of allowing you to transfar your save from your PS3 to your PSP or Vita. MGS 2 and 3 use cloud saves, letting you transfar on the go!

poo poo runs super smooth! Did I mention that MGS3 runs buttery smooth? And that you can see things? Because it runs beautifully and you can actually see enemies in the forest.

Other Games
These aren't in the HD collection, but are new and Metal Gears!!

Metal Gear Solid 3DS
[no image because I'm lazy]
MGS3D is MGS 3! On the 3DS! It has cool stuff like crouch walking and customizable camo. It supports the Circle Pad Pro but who the hell actually owns one of those? The frame rate is pretty bad but it looks a bit better than vanilla mgs3.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
Despite the shutdown of Metal Gear Online, it is due to be updated and re-released with Trophy support and the ability to install the game at once instead of having to do it between every goddamn chapter. Our prayers have been answered! 4 years later

METAL GEAR SOLID: GROUND ZEROES
Recently announced, it appears to star Big Boss again, and is supposedly set in an open world. It also looks goddamn gorgeous, and could very well be coming to PC! More info coming soon.

Other Stuff
Reveal Trailer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbWDTH35CGs

Hideo Kojima's Twitter
He posts lots of pictures of food but also will post a screenshot now and then.

IRC Chatroom
An IRC channel to help organize co-op and whatnot.

An Official Drawing of Big Boss and a Dog, concept art for the next MGS game, it seems!

We're proud to announce that Metal Gear Solid: THE LEGACY COLLECTION will be coming to PlayStation 3 this June! This is the premiere way to experience the series with METAL GEAR SOLID 1-4, Peace Walker, VR Missions, and the Ashley Wood graphic novels all in one exclusive package.
They posted this on their Facebook page, the Metal Gear Rising page, and the Metal Gear Solid page.

General FAQ:
So I can just buy this on PS3 and then Transfar it to play on the vita, right?
NO Transfarring refers to saves only. the vita version of the game is a seperate thing. There is no way to play Blu-ray games on the Vita. Period.

Which version should I buy?
If you have the choice between 360 and PS3, PS3 might be best. The controls are kept the same as on the PS2, with pressure sensitivity and all, and while they work on 360 (and vita), they're a lot better on PS3. It's also only 1 blu-ray, compared to 2 dvds on 360 (one for MGS2/3, one for Peace Walker.) The games are on PSN and XBLA, though, so if you want Peace Walker on 360 but MGS2/3 on PS3 you can do that, too!

Is there anything I should play/do before I star these?
It helps to play MGS1, which is on the PSN, to understand everything that's going on in 2. It's not necessary, but it helps.

What order should I play the games in?
I reccomend starting with MGS2, then playing 3 and finishing with Peace Walker. There are some references to 2 in 3, and Peace Walker is tied to the ending of 3. MGS2 is also hard to come back to after you've played 2 and especially Peace Walker.

Hey I heard this comes with a download code for Peace Walker!
It doesn't. They dropped it shortly before release. The Vita version might, but that's still too far off to tell.

MGS2 FAQ
How am I supposed to get all the Dog Tags?
First you need a deep sense of self-loathing. It helps to start on the easier difficulties, since they will unlock the stealth camo/infinite ammo for the later difficulties.

How do I get back to the game select menu?
Press all four shoulder buttons/triggers/bumpers and start. You can also go to a node and select quit to main menu, and then go to the game select from there.

MGS3 FAQ:
Why do I always get caught sneaking up on people?

Walking with the analog stick still makes noise, use the D-pad to sneak. There is a special camo you can get that removes footstep sounds, too.

How do I get the trophy/achievement for CQC Hold Up?
Sneak up behind an enemy and hold them up. Walk in front of them and aim at their face or crotch.

I have an xbox, how do I do those fancy pressure-sensitive moves?

Big Grunty Secret posted:

On 360, clicking in the LS raises/lowers your weapon. B button starts CQC, B+Y slits throats.

Peace Walker FAQ
I have this on PSP and PS3, can they play together?

No. They use a different way of connecting for multiplayer, so it will not work. If you have the PSP version on PSN and download it onto a Vita through a PS3 you can play between the Vita and PSP, however.

Where can I find the plans for X weapon/item?
IGN put up a guide for the PSP Here. It's mostly correct with only a couple mistakes (The SVD specs are in a mission somewhere.)

Are there seriously 60 tanks/helicopters? That's bullshit! How do I get to the fun missions again?
It is both true and bullshit. I reccommend you do them as they unlock and do something inbetween each one when they're all that's left.

Help I can't beat <X> Boss!
Pop into the IRC chat or post in here and someone might be able to co-op with you. If co-op is out of the question, grind some other missions until you get some better weapons researched. Don't forget that you can carry both Rations AND Curries, so bring a stack of each.

If it's a helicopter on the cliffs, read this helpful post

I keep getting killed going through my inventory!
Go into Options-> controls and turn on 3 weapon and 3 item cycle. It takes getting used to but being able to seamlessly go from weapon to weapon and radar to rations is a lifesaver.

How do I finish Chapter 5? Why won't the last mission trigger?
In order to trigger the final final boss you need to have a Rank 3 intel hub (research starts with a level 70 intel team) and Zeke completed, with Railgun but not deployed. After these conditions are met, the ending plot events should trigger.

I can't find someone with good skills, where should I go?

Willsun posted:

If you don't have the Battle Dress with Helmet yet, I suggest trying to find it first. You can earn it by S-ranking a series of missions instead of hoping it drops from outer ops. Those missions would be extra ops #22-27 and #38-44. Most of these missions are easily unlocked once you beat all the story missions except #25, which is unlocked with this chain: 23 > 24 > 105 > 25. Mission #42 is only unlocked after completing #76.

First beat the game all the way through Chapter 5. Get fulton mines from extra ops #64 to fulton anyone on a ledge you can't reach above you, and get MG3 (armor piercing) from #44 to easily headshot all the soldiers in vehicle missions before you can get both the fulton launcher and the bandana.

Combat: Play some online co-ops, spam the hell out of the Recruit function. Otherwise just wait until you start S-ranking 5-skull difficulty vehicle missions where you Fulton everyone and there will be lots of higher-ranked combat soldiers

R&D: Extra ops #49 (All three POWs)

Food: Extra ops #46 (second soldier in the first area, branch off towards the east path and get the first guy you see on a catwalk [need Fulton mines/Gustav for this], eastmost patrol on the parapet in the last area)

Medic: Extra ops #46 (northmost patrol on the bottom section of the bridge area, there may be other good medic people I can't remember), or Torture Chamber Escape (the single female POW in the cell)

Intel: Destroy the Barricade (go back south to the basin and you'll find two snipers on ledges [need Fulton mines/Gustav for this])

Follow this chain. Each mission opens the next: 45 > 46 > 102 > 47 > 48 > 91 > 49 > 75 > 50 (Stealth Camo) > 37 > 98 (Fulton Launcher) > 83 (EM Net)

Also do this one: 64 > 65 > 87 > 111 (M47)

And this: 113 > 115 > 117 > 119 (Bandana)

It's not quite out world wide.

Australia was pushed to the 24th of January, and then to the 2nd of February. And then one more week to the 9th!

Can anyone explain what lead to a three month difference between the North American and Australian/European release dates? Normally they're only a week or two apart, not months.

You make my korokoro go dokidoki.

Gamefaqs has a very useful chart for collecting dog tags in MGS2. It's especially helpful for indicating which guards you need to intimidate and which guards you need to hold up in the three Hold areas.

Also, two very useful tips for the most annoying MGS2 boss fights on Extreme difficulty. These saved me hours of frustration when I did my dog tag run.

When the Harrier fires its machine guns or rockets, crouch in the corner of the balcony next to Strut G. He'll just keep firing and firing and you'll have two easy potshots at him once he's done.

Once the Vamp fight starts, hang on the south railing. Raiden will be partially submerged but he'll survive so long as you have enough grip. Vamp will immediately walk right in front of you and crouch to do a knife attack. Once he poses, jump off the railing; your invincible frames will protect you from the knife. After that, just punch him. Rinse and repeat.

For whoever in the last thread said the old MGS2 Skateboarding minigame was Thrasher: Skate and Destroy, nope, it was Evolution Skateboarding by Konami. Not quite as awesome as Thrasher (which everyone should go back and play if they enjoy EA's Skate series) and just as big a commercial flop as every other Tony Hawk competitor at the time.

If I do an MGS3 run where I go for both Markhor rank and all Kerotans and it is my first time catching a Tsuchinoko, what is my deal as far as unlocks and achievements are concerned? I know I can just save before the end and miss one Kerotan/one item/eat the Tsuchinoko to get the different ranks and therefore the achievements, but if I get them all in one run will I unlock the EZ Gun, Infinity Paint and stealth camo?

Captain Novolin

I don't think you can get the unlocks because it involves both having to eat the tsuchinoko to get the markhor rank, and keeping it alive for infinite ammo. If you're going all the way with food for sure, by all means eat it and just capture it on your next run since it'll be a lot easier.

For Markhor you don't have to eat anything. All that's required is that you capture it.

You can get all that stuff in a single playthrough. Go nuts!

We also have our first look into some of the control changes. Apparently to cut an enemy's throat in MGS3 you flick the rear touch pad.

His tweet was about getting the voices recorded for the controls, so my wild guess is we're 2 months from a date announcement?

If it's just the achievements, you'll get the kerotan one as soon as you mark the last kerotan, and even though it says Kerotan on the score screen, you'll still get the Markhor achievement as well.

I would have gotten everything in one go, but I missed picking up The Boss' Snake camo so I had to reload just for that one part to get Fashionista.

Depending on the type of game-player you are, it can be more fun if you don't go all OCD and try to get everything out of it.

Some people love rinsing out the most they possibly can from something like this by playing each stage over and over(what I presume Monster Hunter is like, though I haven't played it). But, I had fun just barreling through it without putting any real effort into recruitment or R&D or Outer Ops or any of that poo poo. None of it's actually necessary.

I'm an Auzzie and I got my import European copy from a local games store.
I finished MGS3 first on normal, and holy poo poo is it amazing with full camera controls and shiny eye candy... Absolutely beautiful.

Started MGS2 on Hard as I played the ever loving poo poo out of it when it came out (i.e I had a deep sense of self loathing and want for the delicious secret items), it also looks great, but not as much of a step up as MGS3.

And then there's peace walker, which I played on PSP. It's so much better with 2 sticks (makes all of the target missions piss easy though not having to deal with a nub), and it looks great. I played versus for a few hours tonight after knocking over all but the last Monster Hunter Mission.

My online experience was mixed, playing with Japanese guys it runs great, anywhere else it ranges from playable to HOLYFUCKCONNECTIONUNSTABLEWHATTHEFUCKAREYOUDOING.

I'm the only Auzzie I've seen online, I don't know anyone else who has bought it from my local gamestore, my town is a loving hole. But the game is amazing, best HD collection ever.
