And that's kind of industry standard anymore, honestly. FIFA 2011 was 60 until 2012 was on the shelves, iirc.

Games on Demand pricing is bad because Microsoft is afraid to undercut the SMRP on physical copies of discs. It's a combination of THQ not lowering the price of the disc and MS being afraid of Walmart basically.

FishBulb posted:Games on Demand pricing is bad because Microsoft is afraid to undercut the SMRP on physical copies of discs. That's understandable as well, but then you have games that came out less than a year ago like 'LA Noire' down to $30 in the stores and on the Marketplace. And, if I'm not mistaken, they were much more favorably reviewed and sold a hell of a lot more copies. But then again, something like 'Noire' had practically no replay value. I'm babbling at this point, I'll shut up now.

Out of the $60 price for a new game, maybe $55-56 of that goes right back to the distributor the store bought the game from. Publisher-mandated price drops are essentially telling the store, "That game you paid $55 for? Sell it for $30." Places like GameStop would have been bankrupt years ago if it weren't for their used game business.

I think I heard that when a publisher tells a store to drop the price on a game they give the store a credit to help soften the blow. Not sure if that applies for every single store or just the big chains.

The publisher/distributor/store relationship isn't just a straightforward 'you pay this for this and we give you so many copies of this' thing, its complicated with credits and preferred pricing on future things and returns and blah blah blah. And it vastly varies from store to store and chain to chain, mostly based on volume and geographics.

Yeah, I was oversimplifying things a bit, but the point still stands that stores don't generally like to drop the prices on new games if there's still a chance of moving units at the original price. Of course, it used to be a lot worse for the publishers. Nintendo originally had to give full buyback guarantees to get NES games on store shelves.

And it's probably worse when a publisher (THQ, in this instance) is having financial troubles.

Anyone else really unimpressed by mass effect 3s graphics? Maybe it's been a while since 2 but I just think theyre pretty poor, save for some 'main character' faces in dark lighting. Can't see no gfx options other than Aa either. No shepherd, you are the low Rez!

I'm not normally a graphics whore, but I was really unimpressed, as it's a big title. Even when it prompts you to press a button to focus on vistas, it's like...wow that's really unimpressive. I had to laugh at the 2D sprite people in the very first earth section running on the floor below you.

Yeah I've always had a poo poo computer to play Mass Effect so it's always looked more or less the same. I never had film grain on. Overall though it's really fun but has plenty of flaws. If you didn't like 2, don't get it, because it's basically just more of 2 with better combat.

Mass Effect 3 is loving awesome, honestly my Favorite Game Ever at this point, but it's also frustrating as all loving hell. BioWare, by the loving grace of god generally remembered how to write again, but then they throw just the dumbest loving things at you, as though they are testing your will. Spoiler below. A loving ninja. There is a goddamn crouching, teleporting loving ninja, complete with a loving katana. And there are dream sequences. The game is also hilarious, in more than an unintentional way. So many of the incidental conversations actually had me rolling.

It's rather amazing that a company that can otherwise write a tremendous game, casting off so much of their failings in ME2 in the process, can allow in something so shamelessly pandering, out of place, and inarguably terrible. Nothing in ME2 offended me as greatly as this.

The kinect support for ME3 let's you say dialogue choices instead of using the controller (among other things) but its not perfect and side conversations with my wife and music in the background have set it off. That said, if I can get involved in an infinite Wrex/Shepard loop by talking to the box I'll call it the finest kinect functionality of all time.
