"Mathman is not here." "Oh? Where is he?" "He's in the Mathroom."

It does seem rushed and not very polished. One could hope the game will be polished after a few updates, but seeing Cory Ledesma's name in the credits casts a few doubts.

ugh. I wanted to enjoy the game (as simplistic as Wrestlefest is), but the buggy nature of the game, the ugly graphics, and the sloppy controls ensure that I cannot.

I figure they didn't want to release the old game simply because 90% of the roster is dead, but it isn't Wrestlefest without Hawk yelling that he snacks on danger and dines on death.

I have no idea who that is, so I Google'd his name and I refuse to believe he came anywhere near the GameCube games.

The only update that would polish this turd is a complete revamp. The popularity of the original was largely due to the pixel art.

Anyone who wants some gallows humour in your WWE 12, do this:

1. download a Chris Benoit CAW and change his call name to 'The Monster'
2. put him against Randy Orton in a Last Man Standing match
3. Watch as Cole/Lawler say the most embarassing things in the world.

Yeah, pretty much.

Wrestlefest was a pretty sharp looking arcade game at that time, and it still holds up art-wise. In terms of gameplay it was never a stellar game. It was one of those games they'd set up in the front of the arcade to draw in customers based on it's look/sound and popularity of wrestling. I'm a pretty old man, I remember being floored when me and my buddies saw that game. About 10min. later I was the only one still interested.

Wrestlefest was meant to be enjoyed with four people in the Royal Rumble mode. Sometimes two if you and a buddy want to beat the Legion of Doom.

I was waiting for information to leak about Wrestlefest, and now I've seen it, and I am beyond socks for christmas disappointed.

It all just looks so lazy and terrible. The matches feel dead without any music. The animations are really stiff and half-assed. It all looks like the final project for an amateur game design class.

There are certain little things about the original game that seem like they were "modernized" to be "better" in this one: things like bouncing off the ropes faster, re-recording the ref's count, and putting in a power bar to determine a kickout among other things. But they're implemented in such a terrible way. Look at their running the ropes animations: they're choppy and don't match the speed that the sprite is moving at!

I have a programmer friend who's been following this game with me, and his take on it seems depressingly true:

"And the unfortunate part is that someone probably accepted this laziness because of the nostalgia factor. It may have been the devs. It may have been the producers taking the game and saying 'Good enough.'"

The worst part of it all is how there was a Wrestlefest fan project that got a C&D because this was being released.

I also do not comprehend the reversal system on WWE12. I keep playing on easy so I am able to mount offense ever.

vvv Yeah. Which means all I'm doing is button mashing in the vain hope that I time it right. I just discovered the online mode isn't as impossible to connect to as I'd assumed, and fighting other people, I get lucky maybe once every 10 moves. Not enough to win a match.

Then there's "can't connect to this because Downloadable Content is different." Which doesn't make sense, since I fought against a guy playing Batista, who I never downloaded.

For some reason the button no longer matches with when you have to hit it. You now p. much have to hit it before the icon ever appears.

You can't button mash in WWE '12, they nixed that this year. If you hit a button during the "reversal sequence" and it isn't timed right, you don't get a second chance. It's way more organic than the previous game, and you just have to play it enough to get a feel for the timing. Personally I think this is a huge improvement and makes the game way more fluid once you get the hang of it.

Get on and download (I believe) Alicia Fox. THQ decided to toss some extra network coding poo poo onto one of the free DLCs and then never TOLD ANYBODY ABOUT IT, which is causing a LOT of online frustration. The even more hosed up part is that once you DO download the update you'll get the same error message with people who haven't snagged the free DLC, and it's all because THQ doesn't know how to communicate with their goddamn fanbase.

To drive this point home, I replied to a tweet that Marcus Stephenson (one of the developers of WWE '12) made in response to a fan who was pissed that Chris Jericho was not included in any way, shape or official form on the roster. Marcus said something to the effect of "If I could tell you the reasons he isn't in this game I would, but I can't, so I'm not going to" to which I replied "Stop copping out and be honest. STOP IT. Why EXACTLY is Jericho not in the game, EXACTLY? #NeedToKnow"

His public response to me (which he deleted a few hours later for reasons I won't even go into):

Eh, I'm not so sure. Jericho has been out for a few years and still managed to pop up in the THQ games, but FINALLY his inclusion would be relevant and this happens to be the year he's absent? Unacceptable.

Don't get me wrong, this is NOT the biggest flaw with WWE '12 by a country mile. But it is a pretty big log on the "gently caress THQ" fire.

Seriously. I've just NOT played online WWE12 for about 20 minutes now against Brock Lesnar and Undertaker who are just kicking the hell out of me and my bailed-out computer partner constantly. It is impossible to reverse anything, and it's like I'm not even playing. I think I've gotten two instances of offense the entire time. I've just put the controller down and decided to just wait until they finally bother to pin one of us and end it.

At least I found out you CAN throw people off the cell somehow.

How the hell do you reverse anything ever? The best I did was just sit there and SLAM THE RT BUTTON CONSTANTLY and it worked once, for a second.

There's your problem right there. Slamming it constantly isn't going to work. In this game you have to tap the reversal button at the proper time during the opponents grappling animation. It's a big pain in the rear end to get the timing on because you have to learn to read the opponents moves. Practice, practice, practice.

I've been playing the God of War Origins collection and the dodge roll is seriously useless in these games, having a weird delay before you actually do the roll. So get your parrying button ready. They are pretty solid so if you're a fan of the series I'd say they're worth a play.

I'm done with trying to do anything online in WWE 12. Seems I can't download more than four things (CAWs, logos, arenas, etc) in one session without the game freezing. Is there even a point in sending these guys an email or a bug report at this point? I've isolated it to four 'things' which is already more work than the good-for-nothing beta testers did.

No, there's no point contacting THQ about it. SDvsRaw 2011 had the same issues but was still somewhat usable. Every subsequent thing they've done to the servers has made the problems even worse. I really want THQ to lose this license.

I have most of the same lovely problems with the Character Creation, but I just recently started playing online, and it's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I actually did a full Royal Rumble, which was fun (when it's not against people who've somehow mastered reversals and thus deny me any offense ever, and then NEVER PIN ME AND JUST BEAT ME UP FOR 20 MINUTES). It's possible playing late at night helped, though.

This would be great, and I want similar principles applied to the way reversals work. You shouldn't be able to reverse a move 100% of the time if you get the timing down. There should be a bunch of calculations going on behind the curtain to determine whether or not a reversal works, similar to the Fire Pro games but perhaps with a little more user input. Or maybe some kind of "Aggression" system, where your ability to reverse decreases if you spend too much time between offensive actions.
